Mr KaD, you are well intentioned, so I mean you no disrespect by what I say below.

I read the complete article you referenced. While the authors of the article raise some legitimate concerns, most of what they say is straight-up bullshit.

First: The Dutch settlers did not steal land from anyone. When, in the 1600’s, they landed at the Cape of Africa, the Bantu tribes, the Zulu, the Xhosa, and others were not there. The Kalahari Bushmen, not related to the Bantu race, were there. The Bushmen were wandering hunter-gatherers, not settled farmers and existed in very small numbers. According to records, the Dutch made some payments to the Bushmen for building farms in the middle of their hunting territory.

So, the Dutch or Boers did not steal anything from the Bantu tribes. The Bantu were wandering south at the same time as the Boers were expanding their territory to the north. The Boers did fight the Zulu when they came into contact in an area that was new territory for both tribes. I have read extensively, but have never seen any mention of Boers using “war dogs” in battle. The battles consisted of mass waves of Zulu with spears attacking Boers in dug-in positions with guns. Guns reach out farther than spears and can be reloaded, but the Zulu still killed a respectable number of Boers.

I have also never seen any accounts, credible or otherwise, of the Boers keeping slaves. The “stealing land” and “abusing slaves” stories are just more liberal lies intended to justify the current murder of South African farmers and the current stealing of land.

The Bantu tribes now living in great numbers in South Africa, moved into the nation that the Dutch had created because they could live better there than any other place in Africa. The Dutch, English, and the Khazars (who owned the mines) allowed them in because they were cheap labor. During the 20th century, the population of blacks in South Africa quadrupled under Apartheid, because the food supply and medical care was so good.

The Boers have been absolutely wizard are developing new breeds designed to fit the South African climate and the needs of the farmers-the Boer goat, the Dorper sheep, the Boerboel dog, and probably some others. All those breeds were developed in the last 100 years or less. The farmers needed a guard dog to protect isolated farmsteads from roving gangs who typically attach at night.

Second: Every breed has good and bad dogs. A responsible breeder only uses the best for breeding. He selects breeders that have good temperament, lack physical defects, and meet the breed standard for size. Dogs that are either cowardly or overly aggressive are screened out and sometimes are destroyed. Some breeders who buy big dogs are very careful about what they sell, but I suspect that the lure of filthy lucre may tempt some of the South Africans into selling their problem dogs for big money to foolish foreigners who think they know more than they actually do.

The woman in Ashville whose throat was ripped out was a dumb ass deluded liberal and I have no sympathy for her. Trying to train and socialize a dog by hanging bling on it? She probably had not idea of how to evaluate potential breeding stock, and was probably adverse to taking advice.

All dogs must be trained and socialized. Dogs that were bred to be guard dogs or herding dogs especially need rigorous training. Dogs are pack animals and some want to be the Alpha dog. The owner must make it clear when the dog is still a puppy that the owner is the Alpha dog. The owner must deliver the lesson firmly without brutalizing the dog. In my opinion, adopting an older dog that has been brutalized by earlier owners is like carrying a ticking time bomb around with you.

After I build a fence around my little place in a small village, I would like to get a couple of bitch dogs to act as bad guy repellents and be useful for breeding to product replacements. My personal preference is Chocolate Labs, but am not adverse to getting dogs with a more threatening look. Boerboels are out because I can’t afford to buy really good ones and shure enough can’t afford to feed them.

For a dog with a more intimidating appearance, I prefer Rottweilers. I will pay an extra high price to get better quality ones. I might not be able to buy the quality I want, because the best breeders,with the best dogs, will not sell to just anyone. The best Rottweilers are smaller and mild tempered while still being protective of their family. Incidentally, when you get a dog, get at least two so they have companionship when you leave the house for work. Dogs are pack animals; they need at least one buddy. Big, strong dogs need room to roam too. The guy across the street has his big lab in a pen about the size of my bedroom. My bedroom is kinda small.
