NC lawmakers consider bill that would change school grades
A new bill under consideration would adjust the current grading scale, making a score of 85 an A and a score of 70 a B.
RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina General Assembly is considering a bill that would adjust the grading scale used to grade state public schools.
House Bill 145, which promotes a 15-point grading scale, passed its first reading in the House on Monday and has been referred to the Committee on Education K-12.
The proposed bill would mean higher grades for lower scores by changing the grading scale as follows:
- A: 100 to 85 percent
- B: 84 to 70 percent
- C: 69 to 55 percent
- D: 54 to 40 percent
- F: Anything below 40 percent
The old scale was a 10 point scale, meaning students would need to score a 90 for an A, 80 for a B, etc. If passed, the new grading scale would go into effect for the 2019-20 school year.

Now I know us TBP readers just quickly read the headline and then get pissed off at the state of the world. But this article DOES NOT refer to changing the scale that students are graded on.
It instead refers to the system NC uses to grade its schools. The 15-point scale (A= greater than 85) has been used for a few years. The bill discussed in the article wants to keep that system so a person can accurately evaluate trends.
So let’s get pissed off about something else.
The good news is that when the trend indicates that NC kids are dumb as a brick, they can go to a 20% scale.
It always amazes me how educators are always trying new teqniques that are never as effective as the teqniques that they replace. And somehow, they never get the idea to go back where they started.
If I didn’t know better, I would think they were purposely trying to make the kids stupid.
I have always held that public education’s main goal-at least for K thru 12-it to turn out an average student. Sadly, the averages have trended mostly down for decades, and the same can be said for administrative competence at all levels: school/district/state. It is easy to piss and moan about the education establishment (I do my fair share) but it is also important to understand the role parents have in looking out for their kids. Stupid parents beget stupid children; smart parents make sure their children enjoy and embrace learning.
One thing educators far and wide understand well: the normal distribution (aka “the bell curve”. Unfortunately, there are too many living on the left side of the center line.

kids get credit for simply putting their name on the paper–my wife has to curve the math tests so badly that kids w/a 50% pass some of the tests,and that includes credit for putting the name on the paper–she does put the real scores in the notes in the computer file–

MOMMY WHY DO I HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL?
So you can be molded into a homogeneous, subservient drone who cannot think outside of the state prescribed consensus. You will learn to memorize and regurgitate propaganda instead of how to think for yourself, so that you don’t become a threat to the status-quo. When you graduate you will get a job, and have a substantial percentage of your earnings stolen from you as part of the statist system of indentured servitude euphemistically called “taxation”.
This change to the grading scheme is irksome enough, but the problem goes further. When I went to high school in the early seventies (in Ontario), the average grade in each class had to be 65 (C average). Standard practice was to put everyone on a bell curve to adjust test scores so they would average 65.
By the time my kids went to school in Ontario in the 2010s this practice was long gone. Their report cards listed their grade in each subject, along with the class average. Class average was around 80, even in the tough subjects. So grade inflation is approximately 15 percentage points! Given that SAT scores in the States seem to fall inexorably across time, I’m sure it isn’t that the kids are smarter.
One of my pet peeves is the consequences of grade inflation. It makes kids eligible for university who have no business being there; they pass, mind you, because grade inflation there is alive and well, too. What it means, though, is the smartest kids have a much harder time distinguishing themselves nowadays. So many more university grads to compete for top jobs and places in professional school and grad school, many with high marks they couldn’t have earned back in my day. So it promotes mediocrity, with consequent deleterious effects on society.

In a world where 2+2 = whatever the Party wants it to be, then let’s start a school grading system that really can help with academics and morale.
The following grades will be given to schools using the criteria provided:
Grade Criteria
A Schools that are open.
A+ Schools that are open and have a basketball team.
A++ Schools that are open, have both basketball and football teams.
A+++ Schools that are open; have both basketball and football teams and are named for an African hero.
That ought to ensure a “quality” education in North Carolina, or at least fair grading of the school system components.
HOMESCHOOL. Work to abolish ALL government-run, taxpayer-funded “schools.”

I graduated HS in 1980. Out of a Class of 540 NO ONE HAD STRAIGHT A’s. My kids graduated a few years ago … 20% of the class had straight A’s. Just saying.

In lots of places the socialists would make sure everyone became equal via court ordered bussing. All it takes is one Jewish Federal Judge. They would bus the smart Asian kids to the biggest meanest shit hole minority school in town. That’ll fix ’em!

What they should have done was bused these kids parents TOO, so they could see the kinds of proper behaviors, preparation, attention, etc. the other kids had. Only so much can “rub off” if there is no reinforcement at home.
I told the story here before, but it’s worth retelling. A cousin was giving us shit for homeschooling, then bragged about how great their daughters’ public school was. She noted with pride how there were 32 valedictorians last year.
This has gone on forever. They changed SAT scoring in 1995 as scores had kept falling. Scores from before then are the equivalent of around 80 points higher than those today (ie a score of 1600 today is = to 1520 then).
Yup, when the stupid kids cannot compete, lower the grade levels. When the fat kids finish last, give them a trophy anyway.
And we wonder why the push to socialism is gaining speed.

Moved to NC from NJ 18 months ago. We knew the public schools in NC were not as good. We decided to enroll our son in private school which is paid for by the property taxes we saved. Wish we could pocket the money but we feel an education is a better investment than paying NJ taxes.
