That’s how it was when Dinkins was mayor (and Lindsay). The bruthas knew that they could get away with it and became very bold and aggressive. I personally observed bricks and cinderblocks being dropped on the cops from the rooftops of six story tenements in the 80’s. In those days, crime got very out of control, but it tended to stay in the ghettos.
Today the borders are not distinct, but rather blurred. The police are no longer uniformly 6’2″ Irish lads with hickory nightsticks anymore, either. I suspect that this time, the violence won’t be contained within the ‘bad neighborhoods’ but will encompass a much broader swath of the City. Secretly, I think DeBlasio is looking forward to it. You know – wealth redistribution and all.
