It’s not the size of the dog (or bear) in the fight.

It’s the size of the fight in the dog…

Poor cubs-scared to death. They don’t want a fight.

Could have just as easily been ‘Dead Boy’.

Some little dogs think they’re bigger than they really are. Those are great dogs. We had one like that when I was young. Lived to a nice old age.

I can’t imagine any of my basset hounds having done that. The bears might have tripped over one of them, but that’s about it.

They used to lay around the house like speed bumps.

Great with kids and people that are afraid of dogs though. Who would be afraid of a basset hound? Even Columbo had one…

We have a very robust popoulation of black bears here where I live. Early one morning a local fellow left his house for his daily walk. He rounded the corner, and walking down the sidewalk was a large bear carrying a full grown black lab in it’s mouth. The bear began making aggressive moves toward him. His hasty retreat was successful.

Yup. Good boy was dealing with cubs, a grown bear would have turned little Good boy into an appetizer….

I was thinking the same thing. I wonder where Mama Bear was during all of this. The dog was actually lucky. One swipe of Mama Bear’s paw would have been the end.
Our brave little dog only had to deal with other dogs when a female was in heat – coming home tore up by the bigger dogs and laying behind the toilet until he felt better. No bears in my mother’s neighborhood, thank goodness.

Doesn’t necessarily mean the bear killed the dog. Could have been hit by a car and the bear grabbed it. Sad for the Black Lab though, either way.
