Beware the Five Eyes (and ears)

It is really just a case of how far you want to take your own personal conspiracy theory.

In the aftermath of WW2 the UK and USA hatched an intelligence sharing agreement to pool information pertaining to the Soviet Union and China. The original agreement was signed in March 1946, even before the founding of the CIA. By 1956 this partnership had expanded to include firstly Canada and then Australia and New Zealand. Product from this co-operation was classified ‘secret Aus/Can/NZ/UK/US eyes only’ and thus the group became known as Five Eyes, sometimes abbreviated to FVEY.

Information on this arrangement has rarely been made public by the governments involved. In fact it was only officially acknowledged to exist in 2010. In addition to the core five countries others have been incorporated as second and third tier associates, creating sub groups. Both Germany and France were turned down when they requested full FVEY status, possibly because FVEY wanted to continue surveillance of Frau Merkel, the UN Secretary-General and others that would be useful to hold levers of power over.

It was this information, and much more, revealed by Edward Snowden that gave the world details about FVEY arrogance and capabilities. It became especially apparent that post 9/11 FVEY powers expanded exponentially. lf it could be done, it would be done, laws be damned. The USA has long had listening facilities in other countries such as Pine Gap, Australia and Menwith Hill Station, UK, both being important bases for the National Security Agency with many hundreds of staff. The British government has known facilities in Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Brunei and Kenya with possibly others in locations such as Diego Garcia.

The key unanswered question today is at what point in history did the FVEY members turn their group surveillance capabilities against each others populations to overcome legislation prohibiting such domestic action, GCHQ UK hoovering up American communications and giving the data to American agencies for instance. In 1996 the Independent newspaper in the UK exposed NSA spying on British citizens on behalf of MI5. There is evidence to suggest that this occurs as a matter of course today between all five member states.

Simply put, it is probable that for the past 20 years any citizen, anywhere, making an electronic communication, to anywhere, has had it recorded and stored by a FVEY agency. The explosion of mobile phone ownership and internet adoption from the 1990s onward was a dream come true for the spies. Perhaps it is no coincidence that these facilities were so cheaply and widely available almost from day one.

If we accept that information is power it is beyond debate as to who are the most powerful agencies in the world today. Should we trust them to use that power benevolently? Obviously not. Therefore is is not a great leap to hypothesize that FVEY probably forms the backbone of what has become known as the Deep State, which in its desperation to stop Trump and Brexit has shone the spotlight on itself.

Imagine having a record of every phone call and email made this century by a newly elected legislative official. In fact, every official, local, national and international. The ultimate library for a blackmailer. Would that explain why two party political systems have actually behaved like single party systems for the past 30 years? Are democratically elected officials dancing to the tune of a higher power? Neocon, neoliberal, is there a difference?

Has this higher power sucked others into it’s orbit? The Senior Executive Service in the USA? The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office? The Australian Diplomatic Service? The FBI? Thanks to the recent Horowitz report we know that people from all these bodies were involved in the attempt to stymie the Trump presidency. The possibilities are endless and the power exists to make them happen.

The fingerprints of the Deep State are everywhere; coups, attempted coups, demonization of Russia and China, global election interference, control of legacy and social media, even law courts. Julian Assange and other genuine whistle-blowers are ruined, or worse. The most recent shocking example is the blatant suppressing of truth by the OPCW regarding fake chemical attacks in Syria, hiding the reports of their own investigators. Cruise missiles were launched at Syria as a result of this deception. Some Deep State propaganda tools such as Bellingcat, 77th Brigade, The Atlantic Council, the Trilateral Commission and C.F.R. work openly on behalf of hidden masters.

It might even be the case that the FVEY agencies know more about their own citizens than those of its original targets, China and Russia. Scary to think that a FVEY artificial intelligence supercomputer was reading this post before it even reached Admin’s inbox. Maybe I should have used snail mail and visited the post office, which is certainly what any serious threat would do.
