I filmed some of the trees stands and deer blinds as I walked within ten feet of them and am going to dare Mark to tell me where they are. It was a surreal morning because no one was home. I walked the grounds and realized it was time to have a community betterment meeting. So, weather and pandemic allowing, we are hosting a barn-warming in a week or two, on a Saturday or Sunday from 2-3:30.
We are putting plywood on sawhorses for tables and calling it a “BYOCIS” meeting. (Bring your own chair if sitting) Drinks and cookies in the open air inside and outside the barn. We will issue yardsticks to make sure people their distance and if someone gets too close, I’ll whack them with a yardstick. But, I think we all need to talk to one another face to face no phones allowed.
When it is 3:30 it will be time to wrap up the meet and greet with something to eat and tell all the neighbors to hit the street. But, we will have touched base with one another and exchanged concerns, phone numbers and, most importantly, no germs.
So she laughs at me and that makes me feel better because her husband of 66 years (They are 80; she married young) was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer a few months ago and even though they both have great faith in God’s healing, you and I both know sometimes the healing is physical healing and sometimes it is a coming to terms with a life well lived and ending well. He and Ma on one of those little scooter bikes riding along in Italy, her primly waving “ciao,” the story of how they had to stop like ten times to have a cigarette climbing up the Spanish steps and how Ma said she wished they’d gone to the big flea market instead of the Vatican because that wasted a whole day. They took their trip to Italy when Nick and I first married, almost 28 years ago. I will be honest? I have been afraid to call the cousins still living in Bari.

This annual tractor sale was going on and the trucks and cars were lined up for a mile on the side of the road. (That’s public parking in Perryville.) I took pictures. It looked like a good turnout. Yet there’s no toilet paper for sale. Just tractors.
