HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Nearly 70% of Pennsylvania’s Covid-19 deaths, 2611 of 3806, have occurred in nursing homes or long-term care facilities. State Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine announced new guidance for those facilities on Tuesday to include more resources, education, and mass testing.
“By testing every resident and every staff member in every nursing home, we will be able to pinpoint exactly who has Covid-19, who has been exposed but has no symptoms, and cohort positive cases to prevent further spread,” Levine said, adding that the state will also require nursing homes to report all cases and deaths which will be available publicly.
While Levine beefs up rules and oversight at nursing homes and long-term care facilities, ABC27 learned the health secretary’s mother recently vacated a personal care home in the Midstate.
“My mother requested, and my sister and I as her children complied to move her to another location during the Covid-19 outbreak,” Levine said. “My mother is 95 years old. She is very intelligent and more than competent to make her own decisions.”
Many in Harrisburg wondered what kind of message it sends — when a close relative of the person tasked with overseeing those types of facilities doesn’t choose to stay in one. Levine countered that she is working to protect the health of all Pennsylvanians.
Governor Wolf continued to take fire Tuesday, mostly from Republican elected officials, over his decisions on what counties and businesses can or cannot reopen.
The Round the Clock Diner, in Wolf’s home county of York, defiantly opened its doors and is serving dine-in customers against the rules of the red phase. The York district attorney, however, has vowed to not prosecute business owners who ignore the governor’s shutdown mandate.
Wolf insisted on Tuesday that his approach is not slow but deliberate and that it has saved Pennsylvanian lives.
“We’re all fighting a common enemy and the enemy is not the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” he said. “It’s not me. It’s not Donald Trump. It’s not the General Assembly. It’s this virus. We are all fighting this war together. We can’t run up the white flag. We have got to fight this to the end.”
The governor maintains that if the state were to re-open too soon, and the virus comes roaring back, eight weeks of sacrifice and self-exile would have been wasted.

A couple of things may be related, maybe not but I had to put the thoughts down somewhere because it might be relevant if someone can connect the dots.
1) the sign language interpreters showing up in virtually every political news conference. This is new and it has become ubiquitous. Remember that these pressers are for broadcast and we have had a closed captioning system in place for almost 30 years and Obama signed a law making opting out of closed captioning on all new video devices a mandatory choice in 2010- in other words it’s the default setting for all video unless you choose not to have it. An, interpreter is redundant but it also serves as a distraction from the speaker because they are almost always overly animated and odd looking people. There is also a lot of times when the speaker continues bu the interpreter just comes to a pause, sometimes for up to a minute before resuming and you have to wonder, were they all caught up or do they deliberately drop out chunks of what’s being said for another reason? Once you notice this, you can’t help but see it happen again and again. I wish I knew someone with a real knowledge of ASL to compare what’s being said with the interpretation.
2) The whole mask thing. People have been living in nursing homes and going to hospitals before 2020, does anyone ever recall at any time in any place the mandatory use of masks for anyone entering or working in hospital- outside of an operating theater or ICU? So a protocol that did not exist prior to Covid-19 even in hospitals and nursing homes suddenly and inexplicable becomes the norm for healthy people simply going about their daily business? How was it not a thing for places filled with the sick and they dying right up until this particular outbreak, but all of a sudden it’s the norm? What scientific discovery took place during the past tow months to cause that kind of a complete alteration in medical protocols?
I don’t know why my intuition tells me these two phenomenon are connected, but I think that they are.

Sign language is a Lingua Franca – there is no English, German, Mandarin sign language. The live interpreters are there for the deaf Mexicans, Hondurans, El Salvadorans, Guatemalans, Hmong etc that can’t read the English closed caption.

Then the streams pass through a dozen other devices, any one of which might mangle, drop, delay, or misroute the text stream due to some misconfiguration — maybe an obscure option buried deep in a menu tree that nobody knows how to use. Nobody on production notices the error because they’re watching the video stream, the primary stream, and the video stream looks fine. Oh, and there’s no time to test your config or debug problems because the event is happening live, right now, on short notice. The cameraman barely had time to scratch his nuts between entering the press room and the governor starting to speak. And even if you somehow miraculously get CC working today, tomorrow’s production will be different. Maybe a different site, maybe a new elected official, maybe different news networks, different equipment, different uplinks, different dumbass running the studio mixer, …

My sister is a nurse in another state. She described to me in detail an elderly woman with dementia being brought to the hospital. The patient wasn’t allowed to have family with her & all the staff was in hazmat suits. The woman started having a mental breakdown almost immediately.
I suppose in her damaged mind it was no different than an alien abduction. Those people in hazmat suits had to strip her down and examine her. The poor woman got so worked up she needed to be sedated.
My sister resigned last week. It sounds like between that episode and similar others plus worrying she would infect her family she has PTSD.

Nothing you said in this article demonizes the efforts of the governor and health secretary. I fail to see why a resident of a home exercising her legal right to move to another facility is an “abuse of power”. Anyone who wants to leave a nursing home is legally permitted to do so. They didnt have enough capacity to test every person in every facility daily and still dont, so they are doing it weekly.
So when they no longer need to be hospitalized, where the hell are they supposed to go? If they are hospitalized for anything else when released they must go back to the home. That has ALWAYS been the case. The homes were likely saying they were going to refuse the returns so a decision had to be made. They are paying for their residency in the home and unless their family members who put them there in the first place are willing to take them back, home should they just wheel them to the curb of the hospital and say best of luck to you? Quit trying to sensationalize something that has been happening since homes were ‘invented’ for political reasons. I expect this comment wont be posted because it doesnt “fit the narrative” as others have been deleted
