Masks are useless as well as uncomfortable. I believe they actually increase the odds of the wearer coming down with a case of COVID infection. They make it hard to have intelligible conversations and hide what few smiles people may still be having. Yet I do mask.
Maybe I’m just a coward, afraid to stand against the overbearing government. As noble and even important as such a stand would be, I value more my ability to be self-reliant. In a modern world, in an urban environment such as the one in which I live, this is at best an illusion. I’m not growing my own food or hauling water and firewood. Maybe that’s practical and even essential if you have raw land that you’re homesteading. It’s pretty much impossible for most city-dwellers. There just isn’t enough land to support us, and there are many rules about what you can do with whatever space you have.
Don’t suggest everybody move to the countryside. That would just destroy the countryside.
I live in an apartment. I pay rent, buy food at stores, work in an office. My self-reliance consists of paying the bills myself and doing the chores myself. I know I’m no “mountain man.” The local health department has required stores to demand that customers wear masks while shopping. I don’t know how zealously the stores enforce the rules. Perhaps their business licenses depend on a high level of compliance. I wear the mask and try to limit myself to buying essentials only — no impulse purchases. It doesn’t fight the edicts, but it limits the time I spend in the mask.
My office also has rules requiring masks to be worn. Without income, I don’t have even a semblance of self-reliance. Would I starve to death before I’d shop in a mask? Obviously not. If you would, perhaps you will forgive me for not sharing your dedication. Infringements on liberty start small and grow over time. While this is not the hill I choose to die on, I acknowledge your right to make your own choice.
Heroism is often associated with high risk of imminent death — charging into a burning building, for example, or standing in front of a tank that you know is not going to swerve. There are “everyday heroes” (AKA people) who get up every morning and try to get through another day without a disaster. There are so-called “heroes” (AKA “delivery drivers”) who bring things to our homes so we can remain in social as well as physical quarantine. I don’t claim to be any sort of hero.
I wear a mask because it’s required in order to maintain an acceptable level of life. I expect that this is what residents of communist countries tell themselves as they submit to every new rule. Thoreau said we have the worst government we are willing to endure, and he was right. Many opinionators rail against the way government is behaving, but no one calls for violence. Too soon? Too late? Or is it all just opinionators making money off claiming that the world is headed for communism? Maybe it’s a problem they don’t really want solved, since then they would need to find a “real job.”
My country is being destroyed, and I don’t see how to save it, but I still feel as though I should do something. Perhaps in the end, the real reason I wear a mask is shame.

Forced masking is what it is. You have to eat and put a roof over your head. Voluntary masking, however, is submission to a lie. It’s become a mass case of Stockholm syndrome.
It’s one thing to wear a mask shopping or at work because of mandates. You’re very correct however when you see the Jabronis out walking the dog or driving in their car alone wearing the face diaper. They are the ones that have totally submitted. If we could, it would be great to be able to converse with George Washington. I think he would tell us to chose our battles wisely and there are often times and places where it is better to back off and be around to fight another day.
You are going to be told you have have the vaccination … and a few months later, another, etc. Then what?

I went to the grocery store where I’ve always shopped. Today they said that I could not shop without a mask. I left.
I’m going back on Monday and going to try again. I intend to make as much commotion as possible without getting the law involved. I shopped last Monday with no problems. Maybe its just the dickhead that was in charge today. We will see.
my daughter just informed me that the grocery store that I shop at has also “upped the ante”. I’m planning my response to make sure that whoever might gripe (and apparently it’s the owner) ends up looking like a douche – preferably sans the commotion.

Traffic jams are normal as people exit the city to the exburbs. I don’t think most of these people ever shoveled snow, let alone chop wood or garden. So they will try to hire the labor to do all the things they don’t, can’t or want to do…
I’m waiting for the first winter storms to come and see how the Green Acres crowd shakes out. I can only hope they do acclimate and do produce something other than Gucci and Pucci.
I’ve been supporting the local rallies. As a witness, as a supporter for those sticking their necks out, for those too afraid to. Sam, it is a challenge. Was this supposed to be easy? I think that’s the point of this exercise, isn’t it? We are “existing” in a Civitus. Now is our chance to break free. It’s not going to be for everyone. And the Overton window is shifting quickly. The masks are a symptom. If we don’t get to the cause, the root, the matter and mind….Mask wearing will be followed by other even more nefarious symbols of submission.
What can you do? What you can do and are willing to do …you will be pushed in either direction soon enough. So stay healthy, keep expanding your consciousness and help a brother or sister when you can.

That’s exactly how I was thinking. Then the part about him not being able to be self sufficient in the least. My first thoughts were.Sucks to be him.
That was the part that struck me. When we cut ourselves loose from having to comply with odious restrictions on our liberty we had to sacrifice a lot in order to be sufficient unto ourselves, primarily economic, but socially as well. But the rewards we have earned have been more than worth it, especially in light of recent developments. This New Normal is merely a continuation of that initial separation for us. Self-reliance is predicated upon autonomy- the ability to think, speak and act on your own behalf using your powers of reason, your experiences, your skills and aptitudes in order to be responsible for the choices you have to make. Right now I can still ignore mandates because I have no reason to fear losing the things that other people cannot due to their dependency. It doesn’t matter if I can’t go to a restaurant because we eat better at home and it costs far less. How far they are willing to go- and I suspect that this is just the opening stages of what’s on the horizon- may make my continued social abeyance impossible, but I have made contingency plans for that possibility as well.

Two things are certain no matter what- those in positions of power will push until there is pushback, there is no internal governor to restrain them and eventually everyone reaches a threshold of what they are willing to subject themselves to. We have not worn the MASK for 9 months now but the pressure is on at the stores. Yesterday at the semi- open market where we shop local meat and produce, We had to go and wait by the outdoor table area while the manager rang up our items and then handed us our bags.. They said that the people from the City (San Francisco) who come to the Mountains to have their “virtual Farm experience” complained about us locals not wearing masks and thus the farm was afraid of losing business. Our governor is nuts. The whole state is shut down. And Now, even though the weather is cold, and we’ve had our rainy season begin, our electric company is going to turn the power of for 2 days to prevent fires due to high winds (12 miles per hour!). We are out of here!! What a mad time we live in.

I cut the fabric center out of a disposable mask and hot glued a piece of mesh salvaged from our girls trampoline safety netting.
I can breath and it technically meets the requirements.
I do get some eye rolls and side eyes, so I just smile and wink.

For building projects around the house I have 5 styles of mask – from the simple 3M n95 for drywall dust and mowing the (dried out) lawn, to an air supplied full face mask for paint with iso in it. Hobby projects off and on for a 40 or 50 years becomes “occupational” use. Serious protection needed.
A friend gave me one of those hospital style masks, so I wear it out – only where required by the big.gang.guv + big.gang.biz merger – with a message on it:

AH! It’s different for you guys. I live in South Africa, and the mandate is wearing a mask in public and private areas people congregate. So, walking alone on a street, I don’t need a mask. But, if I walk into a busy store, I will not be allowed in. If I argue, the SAP will be called. They are often knifed and shot, so they take no shit. I will spend the next 20 hours in police station jail ( been there, not nice ), and have to appear in court the next day, where I may be sentenced to directly be incarcerated in an African prison.
So, please forgive me if I have no personal stories of standing against mask-mandates. I hate them, am morally against them, but my 57 year old butt goes with the flow, for now.
