This week’s decision was a difficult one, with so many options from which to choose. After much debate, gnashing of teeth, and occasional shouting, we finally arrived at a decision, and it’s difficult to argue against the ultimate winner.

Winner: Government Officials Are Pushing To Bring Back Mask Mandates Due To COVID

First off, I acknowledge that there’s a resurgence of COVID in various parts of the country, particularly In the Southeast and Southern California, due largely to the increased infectiousness of the Delta variant. But that resurgence represents a spike in cases, not in deaths. The number of Americans dying from COVID is a full order of magnitude lower than what we saw during the pandemic’s peak. We’re currently averaging approximately 300 deaths per day nationwide, compared to almost 4,000 per day during COVID’s darkest days.

News of Texas hitting zero Covid deaths despite its alleged Neanderthalism when it dropped its mandated masking in March is helping to bring down mask mandates, which finally are disappearing left and right. They never made sense and were even illegal, an idea with slim empirical support that only got worse as desperate people argued that adding more masks — essentially multiplying zeroes by zeroes — would amount to something positive. “The” science has been in for over a year but for some reason government policymakers have just now made it clear that if you want to avoid Covid (and for most people there is no need to), the key behavior is to not loiter inside with lots of strangers.

I remember vividly the day, at the tail end of March, when facemasks suddenly became synonymous with morality: either one cared about the lives of others and donned a mask, or one was selfish and refused to do so. The shift occurred virtually overnight. 

Only a day or two before, I had associated this attire solely with surgeons and people living in heavily polluted regions. Now, my friends’ favorite pastime during our weekly Zoom sessions was excoriating people for running or socializing without masks in Prospect Park. I was mystified by their certitude that bits of cloth were the only thing standing between us and mass death, particularly when mere weeks prior, the message from medical experts contradicted this new doctrine.

On February 29, the U.S. surgeon general infamously tweeted:

“Seriously people – STOP BUYING MASKS. . . They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus.”

Anthony Fauci, the best-known member of the coronavirus task force, advised Americans not to wear masks around this time.

Similarly, in the earliest weeks of the pandemic, the CDC maintained that masks should be worn only by individuals who were symptomatic or caring for a sick person, a position that the WHO stood by even longer.

CARIBBEAN—The U.S. Coast Guard announced today that they discovered a man who has been stranded on a deserted island in the Caribbean Ocean for over 5 months after his boat sunk in a storm. A spokesman for the USCG reported that this heroic man has been responsibly wearing his mask the entire time on the island, even though he is the only living soul in a thousand-mile radius.

2020 is a year of disguises. Some examples include computer models/modelers disguised as “science/scientists,” Tyrants/Dictators/Totalitarians disguised as “elected officials,” propaganda machines disguised as “news sources,” brainwashing disguised as “information,” censorship disguised as “public health safeguard,” panic and fear disguised as “social responsibility.”

Even the virus itself has been disguised by humans as an “apocalypse.” But, the last part is not the doing of the virus, but the doings of a select number of humans who are responsible for many of the other disguises as well. And if you look at the totality of events in 2020, it is clear that the average citizen has been treated generally less than human, certainly not as adults in any case.
