A lot earlier than that, Tim (who has a fantastic podcast). I was a follower when he 1st ran for office in 1976. I love to tell people of his impact by noting when he ran for president of the Libertarian Party in 1988 I heard him talk in a hotel conference room with about 20 other people. I last heard him talk in person when he ran again in 2012 at an arena in Tampa jammed full of 18,000 young kids totally energized with the spirit of Liberty.

I pissed off some people when I wrote critically of Rush Limbaugh earlier and maybe I could have expressed myself smarter. But Rush either ignored Dr. Paul or was demeaning of him-when Rush wasn’t express his love of Liberty. Don’t fuck with The Man and expect me to forget about it.

I fully agree with your points about Rush. I made similar ones when he passed. He crapped all over Ron, and the general responses I got back from folks was in regards to Ron’s lack of “pragmatism” when it came to politics. Because compromising your principles like McCain, Romney, Dole, Bush (both of them), and thousands of others in the GOP, has done wonders for this country I guess. LOL

Rush sold this country out to live the good life. However you measure the growth in government, Old Man Bush, Clinton, Baby Bush and Obama all played their part in the plan with only cosmetic differences between them. The fact that he could bullshit some 5 million people a day into hearing him is not terribly telling. You can get that many Mericans to believe you can mine diamonds in a goat’s ass.

He was hated by establishment forces and those who thought the government should control everything. I lean Libertarian in that people need to be responsible for their own actions and much much less on anything government controlled.

He didn’t feel the need to pander to the masses of unprincipled folks in the GOP back then. He could just speak and let his arguments try and sink in. Sadly, it didn’t have as much effect as it should have.

Unfortunately, the only people who would give him a platform to speak were folks like Downey, whose show was just a notch above Jerry Springer.

I spent every Wednesday night for 3 years, at a local market (folks with booths selling stuff, etc.) promoting the Libertarian Party. I ran for State Senate under the party banner as well (in CA of all places). Indeed, frustrating times, but everyone who wakes up a little makes it all worth it. For most back then, it was the first time they had ever heard the message of freedom and liberty and how government is the opposite. I got thousands more votes in my race than registered Libertarians in the district, and I was in the most competitive Senate race in state history at the time. K-12, college, and 24/7 bullshit is a lot to go up against. Indeed, it will be a difficult haul, but unless people get a bit of education about reality, economics, and freedom, nothing will ultimately stick in the end.
