It is the one habit I deeply regret ever allowing to take root. It only comes out when I am angry, but the fact that I resort to it at all always leaves me feeling disappointed in myself.

I grew up on a farm in western Iowa with a father who’s default reflex in times of anger, frustration, disappointment etc. was to let loose a string of profanities. I will never forget the first time he cursed me as a 5-6 year old boy, it wounded my heart in a way that is hard to explain. As I grew into manhood, I determined in my heart and mind that I would never talk like that and to this day I do not.
For those of us that seek to follow Jesus (and those who choose not as well) there are sound scriptural reasons to refrain from such talk:

I believe the reason Jim does this thing is from a sincere desire to serve others; get us to think deeply about important issues, encourage us to care for others less fortunate, to work together on solutions we can use and to give us something to smile about from time to time during these dark days. However when the four-letter profanities, barnyard talk and deprecatory descriptions of private reproductive parts proliferate it shuts down communications for many of us. When you let loose with the “f” bombs, my mind immediately goes to the act of procreation that you reference. So I have to stop–take that thought captive– and chase it from my mind. If the barrage of toilet talk continues long enough the heart and conscience become seared, inured, functioning at sub-par levels. Not to mention the demonic forces that foul language conjures up and invites into the situation.
The word “profane” literally means to be “outside the temple”, thus profane speech puts outside of his temple, his dwelling, his presence. Every man and woman that posts on this website is made in the image of God, whether we live like it or not. I honestly want to hear what each of you has to say, I want to hear your heart: “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” I then take that gift, that offering of your heart and mind to compare and contrast it to my beliefs and experiences to buttress my beliefs or change them if need be. Me… I would have answered. I could tell him I give half the guitars I build away to thise who have no money or need a smile. I could tell him I mow my elderly and disabled neighbours lawns in the summer and shovel them out in winters, even tho it causes me great pain from my injuries. I support and orphanage with money I get from the guitars I do sell. We cared for my wifes elderly parents, 98 this year, with yard/house maintenance and me cooking their meals. I could go on.
Had I done that I’m certain the responses would have been far different and the thread would have been very boring. But because the challenge was accepted and the bait was taken by eager people to dog pile ,the thread got, imo, very funny. It was amusing to see just how eager of a dog pile effort was made. There’s always been some group think on TBP but it’s gotten a lot worse over the years. I’ve been on this site for 10 years and I’m still relentlessly attacked, insulted, and belittled.
I found Admin’s writings back in the day when he published on Seeking Alpha and came to TBP for the financial discussions. Over the past few years it’s turned into a shit fest of the worst kind. Admin has always allowed free speech for everybody which is why I’ve NEVER asked for him to intervene in any of the pile-on. There’s only been one exception when I asked him to delete my entire account when the harassment went beyond my tolerance level and they were being just plain ugly.
Now it’s devolved to where they constantly attack the person and not the argument.

I’ve been piled on many times here but many of my comments have received a lot of likes. I believe it has more to do with what you’re saying and not group think. Though many of the commenters here do have a lot in common, which is why it’s such an attractive site for us.
But when a commenter starts out with a condescending attitude towards other posters, blathers on about a subject that is, (1), none of their business and, (2), nobody is interested in (how did you better mankind as opposed to people possibly thinking how about you do you, I’ll do me), not many people are going to care what’s being said and will get a hard time.
We do what we do in our own way. Bragging about what you’re doing in your neck of the world to help others is not something normal people, not seeking attention, do. They just do it.

To begin with, I didn’t read your comment about Elmer bragging. I lost interest in the majority of the thread; many of the e-mailed comments were deleted before reading when I saw who was commenting. I only commented when an occasional comment that I did read caught my attention that was actually worthy of response. which was very little, to be honest, as people kept repeating themselves.
Secondly, I was not “outraged” by Elmer’s slight toward me. He can say whatever he wants to say. I told him at one time to fuck off and that was pretty much it. I might have responded to him another time, calling him a dumbass, which he is, but after that, I didn’t respond again because the talk is trivial in my world.

This JS overlooks Stucky’s achievements. Over the years, Stucky has shared with TBP treasures from his family life that are unforgettable. Time-woven stories from the (exactly) counted heartbeats of his father to the relational thoughtfulness from the love of his life, his lovely wife. He stood by their sides- attending to their needs; he kept them close to him in a manner that goes deeper than acting in duty or honor. He kept them close based upon love.
The JS in the above posts overlooks these valuable achievements. Family devotion is the good stuff to hear!
Worthwhile comments, thesis statements, QOTDs and rants create myriad feedback.
Anything else is pure nagging and ugly.

I have considered that the JS has not been around. But others have come out of the woodwork before and laid into Stucky, as well as others. The JS appears to me to be fixated on Stucky. I can be 100 percent wrong thinking he/she is familiar with TBP.
Brian is looking for a discussion or answers amid the JS off topic drama. Why not ask questions using his own written work?
So to briefly add my opinion about TBP… Although I know the Big Dogs have their style, I also know those who have been with TBP the longest maintain a serious tone, whether they comment frequently or not. Communicate directly with the person you have an issue with. In other words, cease to be dramatic across the whole platform. This is why I do not see groupthink here. From day to day, folks support the common values Admin adheres to at TBP, with an ability to speak up about issues or overlook drama. Sometimes a wave of support shows up, but not always.

Wildhorse – Thank you. I’ve stated before I’m the newcomer so I don’t know the history of those that have been here for years. My observations are my own and imo are glaringly on display in this thread which was what I thought should be pointed out.
I think I’ve made clear my position so no need to rehash it all again. I for one greatly appreciate the platform with warts and all. It is the discussion where the true merits of free speech lay, its not in the infantile pile ons and character assassinations that materialize with frequency.
