This reminds me of the scene in “Soylent Green” where Edward G. is talking to Heston about the food he enjoyed in the past but is nearly unavailable. Some of the older kids now will telling stories of when they went outside, without a mask and rolled around with others on the grass much like some of us talk of riding in back of pick up trucks in our youth.

As I’ve pointed out before, Soylent Green takes place in 2022.

That is a VERY cool video.

Great lyrics also. For those who don’t have the time to watch the video ….

========================

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere

Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very, very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen

Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me, what’s my lesson?
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you,
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it’s a very, very
Mad world, mad world, enlarging your world, mad

From the website Songfacts ….

=====================

This song is about a depressed young person who feels out of place in this world. He sees life as being empty, and looks for ways to escape the pain. The line, “The dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had” suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov’s idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension.

So, the guy in the song isn’t necessarily looking to die – he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.

Roland Orzabal came up with this song when he was living in an apartment in Bath, England, with his girlfriend, Caroline, who later became his wife. She was working three jobs so he could work on his music (a keeper, for sure!). Orzabal spent a lot of time strumming his acoustic guitar while staring out the window, watching people go about their business. “It’s a bizarre viewpoint to watch people go about their daily routine, having to work for a living when you’re sitting in a flat, unemployed,” he told Top 2000 a gogo. “That’s where it came from.”

This was written by Roland Orzabal but sung by the group’s other vocalist, Curt Smith, who connected with the tune right way. He explained it “was easy for me to sing because I could relate to Roland’s lyrics. We were both the middle of three sons and had been brought up by single mothers with absent fathers. My father always worked away, and died when I was 17, but I hated him by that point. It hit me later in life, but back then I was teenage and angry. The song was the perfect platform. It worked better with my voice because it’s more melancholic, darker.”

Orzabal, then 19 years old, wrote the song on an acoustic guitar after hearing Duran Duran’s “Girls On Film.” He explained: “I just thought: ‘I’m going to have a crack at something like that.’ I did and ended up with ‘Mad World.’ It sounded pretty awful on guitar, though, with just me singing.

However, we were fortunate enough to be given an opportunity by a guy called Ian Stanley to go to his very big house and muck about on his synthesizer. Ian became our keyboard player and he had a drum machine, too. All we needed was someone who knew how to work it. Eventually, we made the first demo of ‘Mad World’ still with me singing. But I didn’t like it. So I said to Curt: ‘Look, you sing it.’ And suddenly it sounded fabulous.”

This was Tears For Fears’ first hit in their native UK, where they soon became a top act of the ’80s. In America, “Mad World” went nowhere, but two songs from their next album, “Shout” and “Everybody Wants To Rule The World,” went to #1. “Mad World” gradually came to the attention of American listeners, but very few of them knew about it when it was first released

One of the comments on your ‘reset’ thread suggested one of the only reasons you’re still around this place was because you suck up to the right people…..

So, I clicked on the link Admin. posted (can you post a piece he wrote that is NOT top quality?) just to see if maybe you’d be ‘suckin up again’…lol

Not a chance.

As good as the article was, there was some real treasure in the comments, imho. (The very first comment was the cartoon video that I posted here, go figure)

Almost at the end of the thread was a critic, posted under the name ‘Shelly’:

“I’m so of coming here and seeing porn on your page.” (and the comment continued on)

EC’s opening line in response:

“Shelly, nice job on the Poseidon Adventure by the way, the ads are there to help defray the cost of providing you this free site.”

Funny stuff, there…ain’t it?

Thanksgiving 2018 I was around here, but sure missed that ‘mad world’ write up. It was certainly good enuff to contend for “You best article ever, Admin.” at the end of one of your posts….

You were on GCP back then, as well:

“Not ONE so-called Christian here —- there are so many here (where are YOU, GCP???) —- had the balls to recite to Holy Roller KaD, Mt. 18:6;”

Way down the thread was GCP’s post to the article. It was rather long, so I’ll just post a small piece:

“Mr. Quinn is 100% correct. It’s a mad world. It is evil because evil is in charge. Evil is in charge because the VAST majority want evil to be in charge. Charge was given over to satan by Adam in the beginning. Adam chose SELF over God thus empowering satan and satan’s power of sin and death. This is not some tall-tale or metaphor for “real life”. This IS real life. This is human history… the reason the world is mad. satan is a real being whom the Bible calls (among other things) the “god of this world” (2 Cor 4:3-4).”

I am in full agreement.

Great comments, Ordo.

Indeed, the comments are always filled with Precious Gems. I, also, as many here do, miss EC enormously!

The asshole who said I suck up to certain people doesn’t have a fucken clue. I’ve battled with ALL the Great Ones here one time or another … from Admin to Zara (I needed a “Z”). Stucky sucks up to no one.

Their album ” sowing the seeds of love” is one of the best, top 10 for sure albums I’ve ever heard. It took them 2 years to produce it and not a minute wasted. Exceptional! Their other albums are so-so.

My sisters grandson is taking a collage level physics course in his senior year of high school and his school is on a reduced in-class schedule where they attend school two days a week and the other days they have some sort of on-line lectures. It hasn’t worked out well, I won’t go into all the details, I’ll just say he was barely passing getting grades in the C and D range. My sister asked me if I would be willing to tutor him since I’m the only one in the family with a STEM background. I started working with him shortly before his first semester finals. He had three first semester final tests and passed them with grades in the B and B+ range.

So it’s clear that:

The modified learning arrangement is not effective.

The kid is clearly capable of handing the subject if properly trained.

Any student that doesn’t have access to other sources of assistance such as tutors when they need help will likely be damaged for life.

The kid just mentioned to me a few days ago that because of the limits due to the reduced class time the teacher decided to eliminate several section of the physics course, one of them the section on electricity, ARE YOU SHITTING ME!!! I would think that electricity would be one of the most important sections to keep in. The only good thing about that is that Electricity, Electronics is my area of expertise and so I can certainly bring him up to speed in that area. But again what about all the other kids?

My kids also did two days in school and the other days were remote, the problem with remote days they only have thirty minutes after school to ask questions of thier teachers about what they are learning and usually in thier harder classes there our so many students with questions that if you’re not one of the first 5 or six in line time runs out.

Not quite the same as what they’re working on in China:
