We’re coming up on the one-year anniversary of this thread being started, but seeing as we just read a piece in Slate about how no one should have to wear a mask outdoors, it seems especially timely. We would have missed out on this fantastic thread by Aldous Huxley’s Ghost™ if it weren’t for Stephen King, who can’t stop complaining about Florida.
That tweet inspired someone to respond with a photo of the getup he and his wife have to wear outside thanks to #DeathSantis. The man deleted the tweet after getting ratio’d, but Aldous Huxley’s Ghost™ preserved the photo for his thread of life during the coronavirus:

I first laughed and laughed at the absurdity and the wit. Then I despaired. Clearly, half or more of all humans remain at the lowest rungs of Maslow’s Hierarchy (physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization needs). Then there is the cargo cult mind-set, the savior belief, the glorification of self, unbridled sensation seeking, the demand for sexual allurement without end, identification with the State, and what goes wanting is self-reliance and the building of wisdom with age, association, and observation. The ignorance all around is appalling.
Commanded by secret powers, tiny people in great numbers are laying ropes over sleeping giants. It’s not Karen who is the greatest enemy, it is Power in the hands of a few. How is this Power to be undone when it is nearly invisible and employs tiny morons to carry out its plans and to be the faces of what half the people see as sanity? The Ghost here uses ridicule in words and pictures that bites the asses of the morons, but what does this do against Power? Are we to wait and rely on morons converting themselves into something sensible before Power can be attacked successfully?
Maybe we should just consider that our condition is fatal, or not, and what must be done is to rely on doing the right thing that is always just there in front of us. This is not relaxation, this is swimming in water whose resistance can either help propel us forward or, if we don’t do it well, drown us. Our destination does not matter, doing what is right matters as this is all we can do moment to moment that does not deplete our resources nor cause us to hope as if we were helpless infants. “Know thyself,” is what every great philosopher has said one way or another.
Jeremiah 17:10
“I the Lord search the heart
and test the mind,
to give every man according to his ways,
according to the fruit of his deeds.”
If Jer 17:10 were in effect today, no one here gets out alive. I thank God daily that’s it’s not.
