Scrubbed AWACS Flights Lead to Toxic Leadership Allegations at Tinker Air Force Base
This article is disturbing not only because a crew refused to fly a mission due to lack of crew rest and the Wing Commander forced them to suffer through a lecture for it, but is even more disturbing when you grasp that it was the lack of prescription sleep aids that were the problem.
Flight doctors started prescribing Ambien for aircrew members to help with time zone changes and “crew rest” when we started droning Afghanistan using AWACS as drone controllers.
Excerpt:
Crews could be given time between schedule changes to adjust to the new plan and get sufficient rest, he said. If there is not enough time available to naturally adjust their sleep cycle, individual crew members can ask for doctor-prescribed sleep aids — known as “no-gos” — to help them get the rest they need, Coyle added.
“While sometimes needed, medication is the last resort for fatigue mitigation, and should always be used as part of a robust strategy rather than a single solution,” Coyle said. “Flying fatigued is not recommended but sometimes accepted based on the crew position, sortie profile, the experience level of the crews, and/or the importance of the mission.”
The unidentified writer whose account was posted on the amn/nco/snco page said that the crews were not allowed to take no-go pills to help rest for the canceled missions, and that flight crews showed up that day after having slept an average of only three or four hours.

My niece flew a KC-135 in the first gulf war, based out of Cyprus.
Back in the late 70’s, I used to sit in an office at Hudiburg Chevrolet and watch the E3’s do touch and go’s. I was always amazed that they could get that thing in the air with the big dome on top.
It is the B-52s that shouldn’t be able to get off the ground but they can. (Wingspan is amazing)
I bought a brand new IROC Z there at Hudiburg in 1988 and then wrecked it in an unfortunate accident a year or so later, so bought a brand new S10 extended cab pickup there in 1991.
I slept during touch and goes. I had 2500 hours, but at least half of that was flying over Iceland or Saudi.
We knew the relationship with the Saudis was just a way to get more money for Boeing then.

I always liked you Air Force boys and girls. You took us wherever we needed to go so we could jump out of perfectly good airplanes. (((Their))) work is almost done. Transforming our formerly formidable military into a broken regional power unable to even protect the nations borders. Of course the fault lies with the occifer corps, the politicians, and the bankers. Death to the aforementioned groups.

I was active duty at the time.
In Iceland, there was the MarBar (Marine Bar) and the Top of the Rock (Airman’s Club).
Didn’t MWR at KEF do a fish fry on Thursday nights? And they made cheese steaks and big Alabama slammers at the MarBar.
Disclaimer: My husband spent 20 plus years active duty AWACS and I spent ten active duty. Then we were well positioned after Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom to take government contract jobs and retire out here to the suburbs of the sticks after seeing the Economic Writing on the Wall in 2008 and 2009. Since I had access to the same financial numbers the Pentagon had access to for three years while I worked at “The Depot” (2006-09) for a well-positioned program management company on the banks (pun intended) of the Potomac, well, I saw the economic writing pretty clearly from a pretty good box seat. I was part of the Program Management team, which meant I babysat a financial database and spun out a few reports. I also go bored and learned how to run my own queries.
AWACS has been feeding the military industrial complex shamelessly for decades.
For which I am very grateful, but we left ten years ago when we had enough. Enough is a lot less than people think it is. Especially when the enemy is just outside the gates, like at Tinker.
The same people in charge at Tinker are in charge in DC. Some of the same faces. I really thought I saw Dick Cheney on the flightline in Saudi one time when he really wasn’t supposed to be there and I’d forgotten something on the jet, so made an unauthorized trip down a hallway. And, since I was told I really didn’t see him there, I probably didn’t.
Who benefits? It is always about the money.
I think the “Over the Horizon” graphic around 6 minutes will be a big hit with TBP.
