Some small towns, yes … but I’ve lived in small towns that have long ago been infiltrated by ’60s-era radical leftists … and now even by folks from the OWS movement wanting to start taking over the US from the small towns inward to the big towns — and they’re dead serious about it.
Real men elk hunt, doesn’t mean you always bring home meat. Sometimes shit happens and elk hunts turn into “goat humps”. When one of your three pack horses becomes injured you pull a jarhead and improvise, adapt, and overcome. Instead of hunting and worrying about getting a dressed and quartered elk out to a cooler with block ice with 85 degree daytime temps before the meat spoils, you stop hunting and take care of the serious problem at hand. You ride one of the good horses out to base camp trailing part of spike camp on the other good horse. Then you ride back to spike camp with the proper meds and bandages to treat the injured horse. While you’re caring for the injured horse, your son and nephew walk the other two horses out loaded with all but the food necessities and tents from spike camp then walk back in so that the last of camp can be packed out the next morning and the injured horse walked out without a load. Of course the blistering 85 degrees has dropped to 50 degrees due to several waves of thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail. Being a real man, life is always an adventure. Of course having all of the elk come out of the dark green timber after the cool down and rain, walking within 100 yards of camp is a little hard to deal with when you know you best not take a shot at them because your priority plate is full.
Thank God I was raised and taught by a real man and I’ve passed those lessons on to my progeny. Also, we still have deer season. Now it’s time for a cigar and a whiskey.

Agreed! Despite the weekend shit show everyone including the injured horse got home in one piece and lived to hunt another day. Also, it was fun in a twisted way because it truly was an adventure. Got both a good physical and mental workout and achieved the best possible outcome.
Like many here could probably tell a few adventures of their own and each probably has some great lessons learned. But GerryB you are absolutely on the money.
I’ve been skunked hunting plenty but nothing beats sitting on the side of a hill and watching bull moose with huge palms and cows cross in front of me, on a migration route near Ootsa Lake. Or fishing salmon near Terrace at the foot of the Selkirk mountains, watching grizzlies come down to the river, me going home empty handed but the soul filled.
If the freezer gets filled, I count that as an extra blessing, a tasty blessing.
