QUOTES OF THE DAY

“Socialism cannot be implemented without the aid of coercion.”

“Truth eludes us if we do not concentrate with total attention on its pursuit. But even while it eludes us, the illusion of knowing still lingers and leads to many misunderstandings.”

“In our country the lie has become not just a moral category but a pillar of the State.”

“[The Soviet Union,] in time of peace, artificially created a famine, causing 6 million persons to die in the Ukraine in 1932 and 1933. They died on the very edge of Europe. And Europe didn’t even notice it. The world didn’t even notice it…”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

A tissue of lies? Could there be a more persuasively apt title for a memoir? Particularly if the rememberer of his past is referring not so much to his own lies but to those of others, and, if I may immodestly boast, I have gone mano a mano with sme of the truly great liars of our time. But then I was a novelist in an era when the line between fiction & fact pretty much broke down as, in coldest blood, the “novelist” felt free to make up things for actual people do on the page. I have also been engaged in politics, theater, & movies, three worlds where no one is ever on oath – until indicted, of course – in which case he who takes the fall gets to write the definitive tissue of lies, often more than once, like the incomparable R.M. Nixon.” ~ Palimpsest, A Memoir – Gore Vidal
