They were just trying to get a jump on the competition – by being able to track the jurors to their homes or where they were staying and accosting them there. After the trial, of course of course.
That this would essentially “dox” them and could put them in danger NEVER entered their minds. (Especially if they voted the “wrong” way in the trial.)
And telling the cop they were “very sorry” is, of course, uttering the magic words that would keep them out of the trouble they so richly deserve.
