German Annexation of Austria — United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

Anschluss

On March 12, 1938, German troops march into Austria to annex the German-speaking nation for the Third Reich.

In early 1938, Austrian Nazis conspired for the second time in four years to seize the Austrian government by force and unite their nation with Nazi Germany. Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg, learning of the conspiracy, met with Nazi leader Adolf Hitler in the hopes of reasserting his country’s independence but was instead bullied into naming several top Austrian Nazis to his cabinet. On March 9, Schuschnigg called a national vote to resolve the question of Anschluss, or “annexation,” once and for all. Before the plebiscite could take place, however, Schuschnigg gave in to pressure from Hitler and resigned on March 11. In his resignation address, under coercion from the Nazis, he pleaded with Austrian forces not to resist a German “advance” into the country.

The next day, March 12, Hitler accompanied German troops into Austria, where enthusiastic crowds met them. Hitler appointed a new Nazi government, and on March 13 the Anschluss was proclaimed. Austria existed as a federal state of Germany until the end of World War II, when the Allied powers declared the Anschluss void and reestablished an independent Austria. Schuschnigg, who had been imprisoned soon after resigning, was released in 1945.

Churchill, Hitler, And The Unnecessary War
by Patrick J. Buchanan
https://archive.org/details/patrick-j.-buchanan-churchill-hitler-and-the-unnecessary-war/mode/2up?q=Churchill%2C+Hitler+and+the+Unnecessary+War

The men of Versailles had brought home the peace of vengeance
the people wanted. Their children would pay the price for their
having failed to bring home a peace of justice. That price would be
50 million dead in the war that would come out of the Hall of Mir-
rors in the Palace of Versailles.

At Paris, Germans, Austrians, and Hungarians had no right of
self-determination not subject to Allied veto. Germans were handed
over to Denmark, Belgium, France, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Poland,
and Lithuania without their consent. Plebiscites were granted to peo-
ples who wished to break free of German rule. But in Alsace, Lor-
raine, Danzig, the Corridor, Memel, Bohemia, and South ‘Tyrol,
Germans were denied any plebiscite or voice in choosing the nation
to which they wished to belong. Three million Hungarians had been
force-marched into new nations. By 1920, 885,000 were under Czech
rule, 1.7 million under Rumanian rule, 420,000 under Serb rule. The
Little Entente of Rumania, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia was cre-
ated partly out of fear of a Hungary whose lands and peoples each
had torn away.

On April 8, 1945, when Hitler was holed up in his bunker, Ger-
many was smashed and ablaze, and Stalin was at the gates of Berlin,
Vienna, and Prague, Churchill, too, in a memo to the Foreign Office
traced the origins of the unnecessary war back to Versailles—and
Woodrow Wilson:

This war should never have come unless, under American
and modernizing pressure, we had driven the Habsburgs out
of Austria and the Hohenzollerns out of Germany. By mak-
ing these vacuums we gave the opening for the Hitlerite
monster to crawl out of its sewer onto the vacant thrones.

No doubt these views are very unfashionable.!!’
