“We Are Teetering On The Edge”: Food Shortage Worries Mount As PA Farms “Crushed” By Record Diesel Prices

Via ZeroHedge

There’s nothing like the sweet smell of Building Back Better…

Pennsylvania farmers are being “crushed” by the record cost of diesel – so much so, that questions about a food crisis are starting to loom, the Morning Call reported.

One farmer in Lehigh County is quoted as saying: “I’ve got a tractor hooked up to my corn planter out here, no diesel fuel, and I can’t afford to get any.”

That farmer was airing his gripes to Kyle Kotzmoyer, a legislative affairs specialist for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Kotzmoyer then turned around and testified to state lawmakers: “We have reached that point to where it is very close to being a sinking ship. We are teetering on the edge right now.”

The situation looks as though it will continue to push food prices higher, after the government reported that food prices in May were 10.1% higher than last year.

Kotzmoyer lamented the possibility of a food shortage: “One, if they can’t afford to put it in the ground. Or, two, if they can’t afford to take it out.”

The PA average for diesel is now $6.19 per gallon, up about 75% from a year ago, the report notes. It is a “huge, huge expense” for farmers, Kotzmoyer told state legislators.

One farmer who works on about 3,500 acres burns through about 2,000 gallons of diesel per month, he said. “If the farmers cannot get crops out of the ground, then there is not food on the shelves.”

Revolution much?

Revolution?

Not from food in the U.S. – this year, anyway.

Also, using PA as an Agricultural gauge is a mistake in itself.

The crops PA produces in any qty. are limited to Oats and Corn. And…

PA is NOT in the Top 10 for Corn production. PA is NOT in the Top 10 for Oats production.

When I look at USDA Ag/Crop reports (https://downloads.usda.library.cornell.edu/usda-esmis/files/8336h188j/wm118v78t/0p097d73t/prog2522.pdf), I see that PA has about the seasonal average of Corn planted (89% and average by this time is 92%). I see the same for Oats.

I also see that most U.S. (staple) crops are planted and at about the same amounts at the same times as always. There are some outliers, but a lot of those will disappear as the season progresses.

All of that is great IF the information is accurate.

At this point, and with the number of PRIVATE companies out there monitoring (with everything from satellites to inspections) crop progress, it is HARD to lie about much for very long. They monitor crops/progress for insurance, banks, speculators, etc.. and this private company info. can be purchased IF you have the money and want to invest/speculate/hedge.

The information is, minimally: Pretty Damn Accurate.

Things can change. Drought, floods, pestilence, etc. – but those things are usually limited in geography and there are always huge amounts of farm land that are great for farming and will have good seasons.

The money is available to farmers that know what the hell they’re doing and have some history. They will shell out for “inputs and inventory” and recoup those costs with higher prices in the fall.

The ones that have not planted are either subsidized, young, or marginal farmers.

All that said: FOOD PRICES WILL INCREASE.

Exactly what the fuck is a “marginal” farmer? And what do you have against “young” farmers? Where do you suppose that “old” farmers come from? Missing in your bullshit is SMALL family farms. Tell me about those…

Peter – I was talking about REVOLUTION. That was what I replied to (the first post) and it was even in my opening line. I then went on to discuss why, from a pure production viewpoint, I believed that it was unlikely to take place from a lack of food this season.

Did you read anything I wrote without turning into super offended liberal man?

Are you really going to use the “indignant liberal” woke shit on everyone and put words in my mouth like that? I think that says a lot to everyone here about YOU.

NOWHERE do I criticize small farmers (since I am one you fucking idiot – I have been posting here and reading for years). “Marginal” is an economics term. From a contribution standpoint, based solely on production numbers (which leaves out a lot), SMALL family farms are marginal contributors of staples. Again, that is not a criticism so FUCK OFF with your liberal, indignant bullshit. Seriously – FUCK OFF WITH THAT you stifling, screaching, little cretin.

I have nothing against young farmers. I never said anything like it.

What I said was they are in the same economic category as marginal contributors, and the subsidized – IF they aren’t growing. They are all not growing due to varying economic conditions. Nothing more was stated or implied. Banks, gov, corps., PEOPLE, punish the young over the old in some situations and reverse that in others. That’s not an amazing insight and certainly nothing to become a stifling, screaching, little cretin about.

Gee, struck a nerve, asshole? Go fuck yourself. Not biting on your strawman “liberal woke” bullshit. What state do YOU farm in?

The idea that those farmers “who know what they’re doing” will “shell out for inputs and inventory…” what exactly do you mean? Shell out from their deep small farm pockets? Or go into debt?

I don’t disagree with the substance of his argument but he’s being a drama queen for the camera. Offroad diesel is $5.39 and I don’t know of a single field in my part of PA not planted.

If he’s just planting now he’s more than a month behind and was going to let that field go fallow this year. But, I suppose a “legislative affairs specialist for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau” (aka lobbyist) farms tax dollars more than corn or beans.

Just don’t get between that farmer and a camera.

I recently drove from mid-state NC to the beach. I was able to see a LOT of unplanted fields. I’d venture to guess, based on what I could visually observe, that about 40% of the fields were left unplanted.

Kotzmoyer is a somewhat unfortunate name. “Kotz” is the German word for “puke”. Not sure what a “moyer” is.

Just put in 5 gallons of diesel in my car today: 40.00 euros (about $42) in Luxemburg where it is 15 cents cheaper per liter. Combine with tobacco, liquor and food purchases I still save a lot. Bought 2 k of chicken drumstick for 6 euros and a pound of ground beef for 3. And I don’t see as many tractors or combine going in my very rural neck of the wood. Don’t see many trucks either

Didn’t buy more meat because my freezer is full to the brim.

Get fat now while you can. 1/2lb of extra weight is 1 day of food calories. Just don’t get fat AND out of shape.

Rant I’ve been living in Frankistan for the past 12 years there aren’t many hunters who hunt alone like in States. They usually get in a group with dogs and search for a prey.
I do not, and I use a crossbow. Just like my farts, silent and deadly.

Also, how safe do you think you will be field dressing an animal? You will need a squad of men to pull security while you dress it out as everyone who heard the gunshot will be on their way to your location.

Figured that one out: 1) guys here a bunch of commies chicken type, afraid of the dark. After the kill, I hang it to let the blood drain, then come back at night and haul it to my shed where I have all it take to dress it.

Always buy more than my regular consumption. Since I never drink in day time (while I could possibly driving) it’s generally a scocth or a bourbon in the evening. However since the summer is upon us, right now it’s Pastis. It’s clear when you pour, but when you add ice water it turns milky.

We had hundreds of cows die in Kansas from the heat the other day. Sort of a first time event, sooo makes you wonder. Arkancide? Maybe the same folks who have touched more than 80 food production plants in the last few months. Brandon, the Russians or some rancher who would lose money trying to bring the cattle to market?

Pennsylvania farms? Every farm and ranch in the United States runs on diesel. The greenie fools that believe electricity comes from an outlet in the wall will be responsible for a lot of people beinghungry.

Here in Cuenca, Ecuador: Gasoline is $2.55……diesel $1.90……40 lb. tank of propane $3.00……inflation is 2.89%

There have been protests, riots and road blockages across the country because of the HIGH energy costs. But the last thing people want is oil exploration.

For Cost of Living Comparisons:
Consumer Prices in Harrisburg, PA are 94.00% higher than in Cuenca (without rent)
Consumer Prices Including Rent in Harrisburg, PA are 110.40% higher than in Cuenca
Rent Prices in Harrisburg, PA are 170.33% higher than in Cuenca
Restaurant Prices in Harrisburg, PA are 73.70% higher than in Cuenca
Groceries Prices in Harrisburg, PA are 134.71% higher than in Cuenca

As a veteran, I’m glad I left the US in 2012.

Wait a darn minute. Food come from establishments like MikDonalds, Pizza Huut and Capitol Grille or when staying home Doordash, Schwanns, UburEats, and a joint that has a coloured apron in the name.

Why would anyone care about the bucolic and idyllic life of farmers? /s

Nine meals to anarchy is the plan.

Then the WEPH and the Yew En can come in and provide plentiful and nutritious insect kibble to fill hungry bellies, serf.
