My guidance counselor said that they were a fine school for medical school, but if that was my only choice for undergrad, I should go to the local junior college instead (Pierce College – called “Cow Poly” as a joke because it was an agricultural college). Not sure how they got a better reputation, but it was pretty horrible in the 70s (not for football of course, but then that is all they really care about anyway).
