Iran Hostage Crisis - Definition, Results & Facts - HISTORY

Student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. The students were enraged that the deposed Shah had been allowed to enter the United States for medical treatment and they threatened to murder hostages if any rescue was attempted. Days later, Iran’s provincial leader resigned, and the Ayatollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran’s fundamentalist revolutionaries, took full control of the country—and the fate of the hostages.

Two weeks after the storming of the embassy, the Ayatollah began to release all non-U.S. captives, and all female and minority Americans, citing these groups as among the people oppressed by the United States government. The remaining 52 captives were left at the mercy of the Ayatollah for the next 14 months.

President Jimmy Carter was unable to diplomatically resolve the crisis, and on April 24, 1980, he ordered a disastrous rescue mission in which eight U.S. military personnel were killed and no hostages rescued. Three months later, the former shah died of cancer in Egypt, but the crisis continued. In November 1980, Carter lost the presidential election to Republican Ronald Reagan. Soon after, with the assistance of Algerian intermediaries, successful negotiations finally began between the United States and Iran.

On January 20, 1981—the day of Reagan’s inauguration—the United States freed almost $3 billion in frozen Iranian assets and promised $5 billion more in financial aid. Minutes after Reagan was sworn in, the hostages flew out of Iran on an Algerian airliner, ending their 444-day ordeal.

Remember the times well. And what absolutely blew my mind was the good ol USA government was bringing Iranians into the US as “foreign exchange students” by the boatloads.

Living in Arlington, Texas at the time when the students started coming it was overnight all the gas station/convenience stores were suddenly being operated by those of Middle East origins plus Egyptians. Many of them had come from New York as I knew of several Egyptians that opened gas station/auto repair shops.

It was interesting to say the least reading the morning Star-Telegram newspaper stories of reported shootings at UT Arlington campus. I don’t recall any Iranian deaths only that some pissed off someone rednecks did not like the presence of Iranians so some folks were shooting .22s at Iranians walking on and around the campus.

Then to top all this off, my employer brought in an Iranian FES who was studying civil engineering at UT Arlington and put the guy on my survey field crew. I learned some strange stuff from Ali about life in Iran. Supposedly the movie Deliverance depicted exact life in the US and before graduating the formal educational system each student had to write a thesis what they learned from the movie. This was a requirement before one could enter the FES program . Granted , there is likely some bunghole going on up in them hills to this day but the stories became more bizarre. Evidently Iranians were not to own a dog in America. I don’t know they have dogs in Iran , in America women have sex with their dogs. I’m not making this up, Ali was serious about the dogs and of course pigs in that Iranians don’t eat pork because American men bunghole their pigs. Right up Deliverance’s alley.

Of course the horrors of the Shah’s regime are always left out of any story about the hostages, along with any information about out 1963 coup that put him in power, our training and funding of his horrible secret police, etc. Wow, sounds a lot like Ukraine…but I’m sure that situation will work out wonderfully….LOL

Liberty, just a typo , but wasn’t the coup d’état in Iran 1953?

It’s unfortunate that after 911 the duped insisted other countries hate US because of our “freedom”. At least that’s what posters on another site were convinced and would have nothing to do with Ron Paul’s suggestion it’s not the “freedom”, it’s the “blowback” from decades of constant interventions in other countries. And the idiots would argue that “we must protect our (US) interests abroad”. So let’s wrap “freedom” in a flag and get a bunch of Americans killed “defending freedom”. Come on, it’s defending greed and power.

Ron Paul on Blowback

Further, Rudy Giuliani is among the worst shills and to think he is or was FDT’s attorney. Despicable, both of them. That’s Queens for you I suppose.

Sorry, yes a typo. Much better when I’m on my keyboard and not on my tablet.
