Pictorial: The Story Of Christmas Via Art (Oldie But Goodie)

Originally published in 2017

The angel said to her ‘Don’t be afraid, God has been very kind to you. You will become pregnant by the Holy Spirit and give birth to a baby boy and you will call him Jesus.

Joseph was worried when he found out that Mary was expecting a baby before their marriage had taken place. He wondered if he should put off the wedding altogether. Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: ‘Don’t be afraid to have Mary as your wife.’ When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel had told him to do and took Mary as his wife.

At this time, the land where Mary and Joseph lived was part of the Roman Empire. The Roman Emperor Augustus wanted to have a list of all the people in the empire, to make sure they paid their taxes. He ordered everyone to return to the town where their families originally came from, and enter their names in a register (or census) there.

When they reached Bethlehem they had problems finding somewhere to stay because of the census and all the people registering.   Every inn, or house, was full.

So in the place where the animals slept, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God.

In those days it was the custom to wrap newborn babies tightly in a long cloth called ‘swaddling clothes’. Jesus’ bed was the manger that the animals ate their hay from.

In the hills and fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds looked after their sheep through the long night. As the new day began, suddenly an angel appeared before them and the glory of God shone around them. The shepherds were very, very scared, but the angel said, ‘Don’t be afraid. I have good news for you and everyone. Today in Bethlehem a Saviour has been born for you. You will find the baby lying in a manger

Then many more angels appeared, lighting up the sky. The shepherds heard them praising God singing: ‘Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth.’

When the angels had gone the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem to see what has happened.’ So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. The baby Jesus was lying in a manger as they had been told. When they saw him, they told everyone what the angel had said and everyone who heard the story were astonished. Then the shepherds returned to their sheep, praising God for sending his Son to be their Saviour.

When Jesus was born, a brand new bright star appeared in the sky. Some Wise Men in faraway countries saw the star and guessed what it meant. They were very clever men that studied the stars and had read in very old writings that a new star would appear when a great king was born. They set out to find the new king and bring him gifts.

The Wise Men followed the star to Jerusalem and began to ask people: ‘Where is the child who is born to be king of the Jews?’ Herod, the king of Judea, heard this and it made him very angry to think that someone might be going to take his place as king. Herod sent for the Wise Men to come to him. He told them to go on following the star until they had found the baby king. He said: ‘When you have found him, let me know where he is, so that I can go and worship him.’But Herod did not tell them that he really had an evil plan in mind to kill the new king.

The Wise Men followed the star towards Bethlehem (where it said that the king would be born in the old writings). It seemed to stop and shine directly down upon the place where Jesus was.

The Wise Men entered the house and  they bowed down and worshipped Jesus. The Wise Men spread the the gifts they had brought before Jesus. The gifts were gold, frankincense and myrrh. The Wise Men were warned in a dream, by God, not to go back to Herod. So they returned home to their countries in the East by a different way.

When the Wise Men had gone, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ the angel said, ‘take Jesus and Mary and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for Jesus to kill him.’ So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary during the night they left for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod died.

When Herod realized that he had been tricked by the Wise Men, he was furious and he gave orders to kill all the boys aged two or younger in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. This was to try and kill the new King.

After Herod had died, Joseph had another dream in which an angel appeared to him. The angel said, ‘Get up, take Jesus and Mary and go back to Israel, for those who were trying kill Jesus are dead.’So Joseph got up, took Jesus and Mary and they went back to Israel. But when he heard that Herod’s son was now king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. So instead they went to Galilee, and lived in their old town of Nazareth.

If you not believe  the Christmas Story as truth you WILL suffer Torment in hell forever “where the worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.”

(Above: Krampus, whose name is derived from the German word krampen, meaning claw, is a half-man, half-goat demon monster  who visits. naughty children to beat them with a stick or chain before he throws them in his sack to take them off to his fiery lair.). Free Speech Rights Mean Nothing to the Church of Leftology

By Robert on December 23, 2017 5:00 PM

Any knowledgeable Canadian knows that we don’t have actual free speech rights. Lindsay Shepherd’s ongoing battle with the totalitarian thugs who have infested Canadian academia is proof positive. But our American neighbours often brag about how their free speech rights are guaranteed by the First Amendment. Try telling that to Zachary Wood, a senior at Williams College in Massachusetts. Here’s an account of what he has endured, fighting the Leftist no-free-speech-for-you totalitarians:

Well hello to you too Stuck. I took another quick look at the pics and will concede that #s 2, 12 and 13 are marginally passable. As for the rest I will stand by my original evaluation, and, frankly, they look like cheap “Christmas Card” illustrations. It’s too bad in a way because there is a great deal of truly magnificent art available to illustrate the story of the Nativity. As for my qualifications to judge I’m both a collector and a dealer (have a Gallery in Santa Fe) and have devoted many years to study of both artists and art history of all eras. As for you “story” I would suggest that the language is suitable for 4 – 6 yr.-olds rather than TBP readers; perhaps I should have said “childish”. I personally continue to prefer the King James version. Definitely not a “snowflake” unless you are inadvertently referring to the fact that I appreciate “high culture”, but since part of the struggle is being waged on the cultural front as well I believe I have my “elitist” libertarian role to play there as well. As you may now surmise (I would hope) – the greetings were not “fake” but very genuine and I restate them now. On a personal note I would suggest that you should resort less to “ad hominem” remarks and arguments; they do your positions no favors. I enjoy many of your comments and, more recently, your posts, but this one would have benefited from more “research” at the very least.

Ooooh. An art gallery in Santa Fe! Ho-lee-fuck. I have seen those galleries. A bigger bunch of trash trying to pass itself off as art you will never find anywhere. If owning one of those pretentious establishments qualifies one as an expert, then the art world is truly in strife.

I said I find it difficult to see the “art” in some of those paintings – but they are pretty, pleasant, colorful. The are nice.

You were a rude fuck and deserved the ad hominem response.

By the way, all Biblical translations are vulgar. But that is the nature of such translations. Translating Koine is not an exact science, you know. But then maybe you are an expert in Koine.

all Biblical translations are vulgar

Is this coming from an expert in languages, old greek translations and from having studied ALL translations??? Or just another generally cranky hater that sees problems with virtually everything biblical?? I suspect the latter.

Thanks for pulling it all together, have a peaceful and restful Christmas to all!

Edit: can’t decide, Mary and Joseph for the human side, the 3 Kings for the reality of what His birth brought to the world and the Herod killing of the innocents to show the depravity that is in the world, that he came to overcome.

Christmas was once called a holy day which goes to the true meaning of the Tradition . Holiness is moral perfection therefore sinless moral perfection which makes Christ our Lord the only true Savior .The only true hope .This was the way the holy day now holiday was once celebrated .
A few years ago people on tv were saying Xmas day which I hated with a passion. Even then I knew it was Liberals slandering Christ .This was before God granted me repentance.

I respectfully submit this since I too was greatly irritated by its usage….I heard it explained by a learned theologian and the usage goes farther back than this review states.

Xmas is a common abbreviation of the word Christmas. It is sometimes pronounced /ˈɛksməs/, but Xmas, and variants such as Xtemass, originated as handwriting abbreviations for the typical pronunciation /ˈkrɪsməs/. The “X” comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Χριστός, which in English is “Christ”.[1] The “-mas” part is from the Latin-derived Old English word for Mass.[2]

There is a common misconception that the word Xmas stems from a secular attempt to remove the religious tradition from Christmas[3] by taking the “Christ” out of “Christmas”, but its use dates back to the 16th century.

“If you’re so inclined to comment, it would be interesting to all if you also let us know which of the art above is your favorite.”

I like two in particular…for symbolism, the one of Joseph and Jeshua in the shop, with carpentry tools is great…Father teaching a son a valuable skill in teenage years. Alas, he found a different calling sometime around the age of 30, and put the manual wood plane down.

But also, the picture of Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior is a good one, too.

Great pictures with a good story line.
And there is another reason Jesus was born where He was. It was the place where they raised the sheep that were to be used for sacrifice in the temple. The same goes for their trip to Egypt and back to Nazareth. All fulfillments of Old Testament occurrences that were types.
His death was for it’s conquering by the resurrection. That through it we could have life. The forgiveness of sins was for Israel alone. Because only they were ever under a law that made them accountable for them. So He removed the law to erase even the rememberance of sins for them. And gave life to all who trust in Him.
That’s why death wins over those who reject Him. Not because He is angry at their being so naughty or rejecting Him. But, because only Jesus has conquered death. So only trust in Him as savior avails the gift for you.
Favorite pic is “So in the place where the animals slept, Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God”, because it depicts the reason He came.
Merry Christmas

A shit stirrer. A friend when you need one. An enemy when you screw up. A gentle word. A slap across the earhole. A loyal pal. A swift kick to the nuts sometimes just because we all need a good laugh.

Stuck is a very simple, yet complex, soul. He is not just any one thing. But he has a good heart.

We can all be assholes at times. And we can all be saints. If I were you, I would remember that re Stucky. It does not take much to push him across the line that separates the two. Try it sometime – the ride will be exhilarating, if somewhat bumpy.

Stucky, what a beautiful composition of paintings. I like the following because of their detail, beauty or sentiment: Angel announcing forthcoming birth to Mary, Animals watching Jesus in manger, Wisemen at Herod’s court, and the Wisemen offering gifts to Jesus.

It’s interesting that Mary wasn’t honored in Christianity until the 300s. Mary took the place of the European pagan goddess of earth for worship.

I was watching a cancer natural cures video and one of the Middle Eastern doctors was talking about the healing properties of turmeric. He said in the Middle East, turmeric is called the golden spice. He believes those interpreting the Bible made a mistake on the gift of gold to Jesus, saying it was actually meant to be the golden spice, turmeric. Note the other gifts were spices as well, myrrh and frankincense. It makes perfect sense.

Flash, I’m not a doctor but I’ll tell you about what I’ve read that helps spinal cord injuries. According to one article I read, insufficient Vitamin B12 can hamper your ability to heal from a spinal cord injury. You may want to supplement with desiccated liver tablets. These are the liver tablets I take. The liver is derived from organic, grass-fed cows. It’s raw liver that has been dried, powered and encapsulated.
https://www.radiantlifecatalog.com/product/radiant-life-desiccated-liver/superfoods-supplements
I’ve also read that adding frankincense to your turmeric (Cucumin) works synergistically and will enhance your healing ability. You can also rub these directly on the spine for better penetration.
Also I’ve read supplementing the above 2 with omega 3s (flax seed) in your diet will help.
Again, I’m not a doctor, so do your own research as well.

Stucky, in fact, mixing the essential oils of those three gifts to Jesus (if the third was truly the gift), frankincense, myrrh and the golden spice, turmeric, is a powerful cancer killer and prevention. It’s also good for keeping you disease free.
Try adding some drops of these essential oils to your smoothy, or in a beverage. I think in time you’ll see and feel a difference in your health. Natural medicine takes time because it has to get into your system to start working.

Stucky, a very nice posting to share your thoughts and enjoyment for Christmas with everyone – not just those of the Christian faith, but all of us.

I thought of you last night when I fixed myself a ‘broken leg’.

I mean the drink, not a broken bone. It’s hot apple cider with either rum (most common) or with Laird’s Applejack (a blended Brandy) and a cinnamon stick. I like the Applejack version.

I remembered from your “What Do You Collect?” post that you love cinnamon.

The first time that I had one of these was 30+ years ago when I was still living up in the frozen tundra in Buff-lo, NY. My wife and I had been outside enjoying the snow and we went to a local restaurant to warm up. Broken Leg drinks were the special. After the first one went down so smooth I handed the waiter my empty mug and told him to break my other leg. I wanted another.

It’s a great cold weather drink and we had a cold snap here last night, or at least what passes for one here in the Houston swamp so I sat outside and had one…or two…

I think that I’ll start calling the cinnamon sticks ‘Stucky Sticks’. Hope you don’t mind…

Stay warm up there in the frozen north everyone and a Merry Christmas to all.

You were actually nice to me in 2017 Stucky. 🙂
