Actually the end of drug prohibition is one thing I agree with them about (though I came to that conclusion by myself). My father had 5 kids in Takoma Park Maryland. Mom and Dad did NOT have college educations. Mom never worked. Dad was blue collar all his life. All 5 kids went to private school all the way through high school. We always had a working vehicle. We always had health insurance (that I know of). Dad never worked on the weekends. We always owned a home…single family house, not condos or townhouses (although we did live in a mobile home for about 1 year while our house was being built). For most of my father’s life he also had time to bowl for 3o years in bowling leagues that met twice a week and he had for most of that time a hotrod.

That must have been some well paying blue collar job your dad had. My mom worked all the way through WWII. My brother went to a babysitter beginning at age 3. My dad was on the extra board at the RR for a couple years before he got on permanent. They rented an apartment and later a small bungalow until they built a house they did most of the work on. 2Br, 1 bath, single car. I was born 9 yrs later when my brother was 17. My mom finally quit when she got pregnant with me. She was just embarrassed to be pregnant at 41. She did go back to work when I was 13 for a couple years and decided she hated it and stayed home again.
My dad did a few selling jobs on the side to bring in extra money. The only people I knew that lived better had dads with white collar jobs.
We did have some decent vacations. By the time I was born my dad had 4 weeks of vacation and free or vastly reduced fees to take a train but more often than not we did road trips.

My father was a mechanic. He was also a logger in Michigan and a steel worker at times. He was a partner in 2 businesses but he was always the worker bee/laborer. 1 business (logging) was a complete dud. We had to leave Michigan because he couldn’t support his family. The other business was a pretty good success. He was the mechanic (for printing machines. Yes, it is a specialty) part of the partnership. He only owned 45% of the business and was shoved out the door right around the age of 55. He is a survivor.
Oh man, in my younger days I got jammed in many a Heidelberg and Komori’s. The best is newspaper presses, they would shut off a unit so I could work on it while the newspaper would run just over my head. I ain’t afraid of being covered in ink. Just sucks getting it off. It gets everywhere.

I raised 4 kids in a similar way. My 3 daughters are currently stay at home Moms as is my son’s wife. All homeowners with plenty of extracurricular activities.

Sure. For you particularly because what I see with my own eyes does not match up with what is claimed in some articles.
I raised my 4 kids in a small city 20 minutes North of Boston. I was and still am self employed. My parents, grandfather, and many other family members also earned their incomes from either self employment or some other 1099 method like real estate sales or appraisals. Many of my friends, past and present, also either own their own business or receive 1099 income.
Even though my oldest daughter is a stay at home mom with 2 teens and 2 preteens she does help her husband run a business from 1,000 miles away. At the same time they’re rebuilding an orchard.
My son does have an actual job. But he does it from home and his knowledge/ skills are in high demand. Same with another SIL. Many of my sons friends are self employed or have similar high tech jobs. They have kids and the wives mostly stay home.
This is the world I live in. Young people in their 20’s are still getting married and having kids. They’re buying houses in a very expensive part of the country.
So, Wip, what I described is not what your father did with a blue collar job. But my other SIL works blue collar for the same city mentioned above. He and my youngest with 1 kid just bought a house. She is mostly a stay at home Mom. She has skills which she sometimes puts to use part time.
From my perspective, as shown above, the path to success for young people wanting to raise families, buy homes is through some type of self employment or incentive based employment. Skills help.
