Though it undoubtedly helped keep Trump out, it one leg of a much wider and long-term purpose: absolute techno-oligarchy. Full-spectrum dominance, as the ghouls of Davos have termed it.

Can’t wait to see what happens to them when they heating and water are turned off and the manitenance is deferred for a decade or so. No rent, no upkeep. No services and caretaking, the systems decay and fail. With buildings that size sandwiched into those spaces you’re going to see a whole lot of problems that will not be easily corrected for amounts of money that cannot be imagined.

I remember visiting a friend in Chicago 25 years ago.
She had an apartment in one of the old, high rise buildings just off of Michigan Avenue.
Was an overnight stay.
Went in the bathroom to take a shower one morning.
With the spigot turned on full blast, there was a trickle of water that came out of the shower head
that wouldn’t put out a fire if the need arose.
Sclerotic plumbing that would have taken a lot of $$ and some major renovation to replace the lines.
The lesson wasn’t lost on me.
Big city aging structures to purchase a loft condo for investment and daily living?
No thanks.
Would prefer one of those cabins in the woods that &kit occasionally posts in FF.

No problem. If the upkeep is too expensive and demolition would be too costly, just double-insure the places and have some Saudis (sic) a fly a couple of planes into them.
Problem solved.

BTW, make sure you and your buddies avoid the place that day, all breaking your for several year normal routines.

that plan worked for silverstien and no one in the media ever questioned his luck reinsuring only 3 weeks prior while the buildings were wired for demolition.

I believe the TV show “Life After People” was partly filmed in Detroit where some abandoned buildings that have sat for twenty years are taken over by vines and other foliage that is already breaking them apart. A similar fate awaits anything truly abandoned in places like NYC.

Hey. A “15-minute-city” already built and ready for move in, when they clear out upstate New York.
Have to get them rural folks dependent on the state, and herded into their pens, a la Shanghai.
See the plans already implemented at 220 West 42nd St.
And you thought the Social Security checks would keep coming, as long as you’re still breathing.
Uncle seems to be willing to foot the bill for the migrants.
Run the presses and add some digits to the accounting sheet at the Fed, boys.
2nd fall of Rome, or the 2nd coming of Weimar, Venezuela, or Zimbabwe?
Got junk silver and other valuable items for barter?

When I was a kid I used to take the train into NYC from Long Island. The round trip fare was like 2 bucks for kids under 12 back then . I was amazed at the hustle and bustle .I would walk from Penn Station to the garment district carts of clothing being pushed to and fro. That industry alone employed thousands. There was domino sugar , swing line staplers ,remnants of the docks still existed. Any young kid could get a job In the financial arena. My cousin got a job for a check clearing house and as a messenger at 16 yo . By the time he was twenty he was working on wall street for TD bank . He had no college just a kid from Brooklyn with a GED.The ability for a high school kid to succeed in NY is gone. The city is done it’s dependant on tourists and foreigners . An apartment that was 200 bucks in the early 80 s is now 3k or more . Everyone wanted to be a cop or fireman in NYC back then now not so much.

I used to take the bus from Princeton to GCS from the age of 13, alone just to wander around the city on Saturdays. Grab a hot dog, dodge the hustlers and beggars, hit a museum, maybe see a movie and come home in the dark. Even in the 70’s it was not only affordable, it was safe enough for a kid on his own.

Now it’s just another Gary, Indiana or Akron, Ohio.

Manhattan was absolutely incredible in the 60’s. The only “foreigner” I remember seeing was at the ice rink. Some guy from the Afghan embassy I struck up a conversation with because he had a magnificent Afghan dog with him.

My Dad flew from Germany to New York in the 1960s, in his early 20s, which was a huge deal for the people in his small German town. He still talks about that, which felt like the adventure of his life.

I occasionally drink here in FL with a retired NYPD detective. Hell of a nice guy, was an army ranger before that in the late 70s. Hes loaded but looks poor. He told me he worked in organized crime task force and financial crimes over the years. Go figure.

I borrowed a thousand dollars from my brother in the mid 1970s. When I went to pay him back, I thought it would be fun to give him a thousand dollar bill, so I went to the bank to get one, but they had all been taken out of circulation as part of the war on drugs. The largest I could get (and still today) was a hundred. That hundred is officially worth about $17.48 today compared to 1975. And that is the OFFICIAL figures. In the real world they have been understating inflation for decades. My guess is that actual value is probably closer to $10 of 1975 cash.

Would anyone like to ask the real estate developer from NYC who is currently leading in the polls about this? Or are we just going to wait until the next lame duck session of Congress to confirm that they are?
