Maslow and His Unclimbable Pyramid

Guest Post by Todd Hayen

Everyone knows Maslow and his pyramid of needs, right? Don’t feel bad if you don’t; it is just one of those psychological concepts psychologists like to come up with to illustrate explanations of the weird human mind.

Not to diss Maslow, he was pretty cool. And a lot of these guys (and gals) were rather brilliant in what they came up with. I only know who Maslow was because I had to study him in therapy school.

Here’s the skinny on Maslow—courtesy of Wikipedia:

“Abraham Harold Maslow (/ˈmæzloʊ/; April 1, 1908 – June 8, 1970) was an American psychologist who created Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, a theory of psychological health predicated on fulfilling innate human needs in priority, culminating in self-actualization. Maslow was a psychology professor at Brandeis UniversityBrooklyn CollegeNew School for Social Research, and Columbia University. He stressed the importance of focusing on the positive qualities in people, as opposed to treating them as a “bag of symptoms”. A Review of General Psychology survey, published in 2002, ranked Maslow as the tenth most cited psychologist of the 20th century.

“Bag of symptoms”? I like him already. Anyway, I will focus on his famous “Pyramid of Needs” for this article.

Let’s take a look at it.

As the diagram illustrates, Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs is in a pyramid shape. The shape is divided into five levels. The first, base, level is described as “physiological needs.” This is where food, water, shelter, clothing, breathing, etc. are sought as a “need.” A large portion of people on earth have satisfied this level, but of course, many have not. Certainly, in North America, most have moved to the second level.

Here we find “safety and security.” This is the level of need that includes health, employment, property, family, and security. I am proposing that we are essentially stuck at this level, and this is the level that the agenda is primarily focused on keeping us. I will come back to this after going through the other levels.

Next up is “love and belonging.” You would think that most of the developed world would be here. This is where relationships become the priority—romance, friendship, family, children, intimacy, and most importantly, a sense of connection. Although the culture struggles to reach this level, the agenda puts forth most of its effort to push us back down into Level 2. Level 3 is dangerous to the agenda, it is where humans begin to function as humans, and not as consumer machines.

Level 4 very few of us are engaged with. This is the level of “self-esteem.” Here we focus on confidence, personal achievement, and most importantly, the need to be a unique individual. Of course, the agenda will do everything in its power to keep us from spending any time here at all.

The last level (5) is “self-actualization” which encompasses the need for a sense of morality, creativity, spontaneity, purpose, meaning, and inner potential. How many of us are at this elusive level? How many sheep are here? This level, according to the agenda, must be avoided at all costs. Spirituality, religion, and deep insight are all major taboos to the agenda whose primary aim is the complete acquiescence of the masses. Their goal, of course, is total control. They wish to be the “god,” the “religion” and the “spiritual center” of everyone’s universe. One way to accomplish this is through the conversion of science to a religion—scientism—and to make the purpose and meaning of life, consumption—consumerism.

Let’s go back to Level 2 for a moment. I had forgotten after the many years that have passed since I studied Maslow’s Pyramid of Needs as a student that this level consists of the need for security. Here is a quote from the website “Simply Psychology” that sheds a bit more light on this concept:

“Safety needs can be fulfilled by the family and society (e.g., police, schools, business, and medical care). For example, emotional security, financial security (e.g., employment, social welfare), law and order, freedom from fear, social stability, property, health, and wellbeing (e.g., safety against accidents and injury).”

I found this intriguing after my recent revisit to Maslow’s concepts. “Police, schools, business, and medical care,” not to mention “government” are primary “need fulfillment” sources in Level 2. It all started to make sense why the agenda must make every effort to keep us all as deeply ensconced in Level 2 as possible. Fearmongering, consumerism, and medical dependence are all essential elements to keep us from passing through this level onto the higher levels of individuation and self-actualization.

Just about everything that is happening in the world today seems designed to keep us at Level 2. The dangers, to the agenda, of Levels 3, 4 and 5 are simply unacceptable to them.

Keeping us all in a state of perpetual fear is one of the key strategies for ensuring that security is just beyond reach. I don’t have to describe how that tactic has been utilized and is continuing to be utilized, for decades. There is a direct infusion of fear as we saw during the first months (years actually) of the Covid nonsense. Then there is the medical fear that is continually thrown at us day in and day out—fear of cancer, fear of heart disease, fear of mental illness, fear of sugar, fear of cholesterol, fear of this and fear of that. The entire medical industry is dependent on fostering fear, and then offering a “solution” for what we are afraid of (which, more often than not, entails more drugs, and more treatments to treat the side effects of the original treatment).

Then there is the general fear of life itself, fear of financial disaster, fear of terrorism, fear of natural disaster, fear of fires, fear of earthquakes, fear of flooding, fear of tropical storms, fear of climate warming (the Grandaddy of all fears).

So, it is clear that inciting fear is a very powerful method to keep a sense of security at bay. Therefore, we stay at Level 2, and as Maslow said, we cannot comfortably move to the next level until the needs of the lower level we occupy are met.

Fear isn’t the only tactic at the disposal of the agenda; there are others, such as keeping the culture at a constant level of overwhelming consumption of “things”—thus creating a sense of worth only through consumption and acquisition. Dependence on cell phones, video games, drugs (alcohol and marijuana in particular), pornography, and, of course, dependence on the government itself. All these dependencies can be manipulated from the top. They can be taken away, or the need for them increased, whatever is necessary to keep us feeling insecure, thus the needs of Level 2 are never met.

Take a closer look at the levels above Level 2. The next one is a connection with other human beings. See how the agenda has done its darndest to keep us from filling those needs? Love of family, of each other, deep sexual intimacy that only comes through meaningful encounters with the object of one’s sexual orientation (how many of you know that transsexualism is not about sexual intimacy?) are all needs of Level 3. It is clear the agenda does not want us venturing into Level 3, let alone Levels 4 and 5. If we do, we might actually start functioning like human beings, and it is quite clear no one in the elite class wants that.

Very intetesting viewpoint, worthy of additional consideration. I have not studied psychology but have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy. OP assumes its validity and builds on it.

OP also manages to not mention Strause and Howe, so extra kudos.

I’m not a big believer in psychology (as a “science”) and it’s psycho-babble. I will say that I like the premise of this piece though. There can be little doubt that TPTB are very much into psychology and are utilizing it on susceptible parts of the masses for nefarious means.
I said “susceptible” because I believe there are many that are impervious to their machinations- the scales are off the eyes, if you will. For some this is natural– I’m a natural sceptic/cynic and stoic so I gauge things mentally as routine. Most on this site do the same ( although there are some child-like commentors who post to agitate, reflexively or emotionally–ie the ANON who can’t stop from a snide/hateful comment to anyone’s post about their faith).
A quick personal note– and I try and avoid these things on the net: I once was in a situation where I had sustained severe injury. Laying on the ground with all four of my limbs fractured and blood pooling out from somewhere, the EMT was working on me while waiting for the chopper to arrive to take me to shock trauma. Natural endorphins had kicked in and although the pain was intense I was calm and fully aware of the situation– and strangely at peace.
Some here mock faith but at that moment, bleeding to death and legs/arms twisted and broken from a fall that should have killed me, I KNEW that if I died that I was going to be okay because I was RIGHT about my faith in Jesus Christ.
I even still had my sense of humor– lying there with the buxom EMT leaning over me I got this thought about the parallels and synchronicities in life– I told her, “The first thing I saw coming into this world was the warm comfort of my mother’s breast and the last thing I’ll see apparently are your big boobs hanging in my face”

That is peace- between the pain and actively dying ( when I got to the hospital I had lost so much blood my veins were collapsed and the IV transfusion had to go directly into my chest to access) I still tried to make another person smile or laugh, reassuring those standing around me.

If any of this psychology pyramid has validity know this- they are a joke and have no power over you except fear. If you’ve been fortunate, as I was, to have faced impending death without fear, they will NEVER have any power over you.

Enjoyed your comment.
Looking at the the pyramid I’d place ‘self-actualization’ as the base, without that the rest does not matter. As you said above ” There can be little doubt that TPTB are very much into psychology and are utilizing it on susceptible parts of the masses for nefarious means.” Chop off the legs at ‘desiring to be the most one can be’ and that topples the human spirit.
Satan desires to make one a fool, as described in Psalm 14:1.

javelin – I have a neighbour who is a shrink, had to work with shrinks when I was a child care worker and they are all mental loons.

I met a lady last year on one of my morning rides to the mountain top who was, it turned out a shrink. She stated she was disliked in her office because she went thru so many clients and the others didn’t. She’d help her clients to deal mentally with their issues and cut them loose when they didn’t need her any more. A RARE individual amongst a field of communist freaks. and yes, most of them ARE regressive liberals.

and, these dirtballs have never held sway over me. freedom, now and for eternity in Christ

Beautifully said there is only fear and it’s opposite Love. I am talking about Divine love that comes from God. You are either in a state of perpetual fear or you dwell in the house of the Lord/love. You obviously were dwelling in the house of the Lord.

Not to diss Maslow, he was pretty cool.

Maybe he was cool, or maybe he was just laying down a roadmap to control the goyim. What Todd doesn’t mention from wikipedia….

Born in 1908 and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Maslow was the oldest of seven children. His parents were first-generation Jewish immigrants from Kiev, then part of the Russian Empire …

Maslow and other young people with his background were struggling to overcome such acts of racism and ethnic prejudice in the attempt to establish an idealistic world based on widespread education and economic justice.

Sounds like Tikkun Olam to me.

The religion of anti theism?

You belong to one of several religions which deny the true nature of man is as a part of the godhead. It is this denial which makes it possible to harm your fellow man.
Why?
Because you are no longer killing a part of god, you are killing something less than. Whivh in a way is true, for even though we are all a living part of God, our powers are limited to the physic realm. And will remain so until we put down ALL the divisions we have invented over the years.

Religion, is supposed to point you to this conclusion, but clergy have learned they can parasite off of your guilty consciences, after they successfully install them.

Are you Luciferian? The first and ancient lie presented in the Garden was, “you shall not die- you will be as God”
Nothing new under the sun. All gnosticism and New Age teachings are the same deception from the beginning. “Make your own truth” “my truth” ” we are all god”.. same as it ever was.

Romans 1: 19-23 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man

The first and ancient lie presented in the Garden was, “you shall not die- you will be as God”

I agree.
We die.
Satan is the father of the “eternal soul” mindfuck. You see, many will tolerate all manner of abuses if you convince them there is a prize available, but only when you die.
It is a complete inversion of the truth.
You say I am satanic forclaiming the life in me is god.
What then is the life force in you if it is not god?

Fools will never know what “according to knowledge” means, as long as you continue to deny the holy spirit inside of you.

You people flip from applying blessings to yourselves whole expressing the most horrible of deaths for others.
By doing this? You make yourselves liable to the death.

“You are gods.”
It’s in the bible.
Stop assigning yourselves as slaves of any others.

The physical dies, of course. As Soul, we never die. Only God has the power to create and destroy Souls. But he doesn’t destroy soul as this is part of Gods love, and Souls are always redeemable. Isn’t that what Christianity is about?
It’s not about our belief in God, it’s our understanding of God. It’s also not about worship of God, but about the practice of being in his presence/grace.

Christianity is about the worship of allegory seasoned with factual guidance on how to behave while on earth.

The pyramid denies the plasticity of the mind.

The idea that no needs from higher levels can he addressed unless all lower requirements are met is absurd.
One can be learning simultaneously at all five “levels”

It is a psyche priority teaching tool. An illustration. Not hard science.

Well what seems pretty obvious is that yes , eventually you can be learning all the levels at once but from an initial start up perspective you cant get to the upper levels without first achieving the lower ones first . Everyone goes from dependency to independence before they can engage in productive interdependencies . You gotta be able to crawl before you can walk and you gotta be able to walk before you can run . And no ,I don’t frame the roof first and then work down to the foundation and then the dirtwork .

Maslow (and Ericson) may seem trite when they are pushed on you in medical school, but they do have application in the real world.

I think that they do want people to move beyond level 2 (safety/ security) as long as it is supplied only by the state, and into level 3 (family/ friendship), so long as that level is also only supplied by the state apparatus and by its adherents.

They want to wrap people in a thought cocoon that only the state and state approved people can love you and support you, and that everyone else is an enemy to be vehemently hated and destroyed.

But they don’t ever let these chattel get to level 4 or 5; that is ‘verboten’. Can’t have them thinking for themselves.

Thoughtful piece! The Maslow pyramid is a good premise to start thinking about what it means to be human but not complete nor conclusive.
It’s interesting that a human being with wise self esteem, capable equanimity and experienced knowledge can choose to ignore all lower levels and reduce the physiological needs to a bare minimum isn’t it?
There is much more to be human. An adventure, for sure, to boldly go where no man has gone before?

Hmmm. Interesting. Here’s a less negative approach. In the Maslow hierarchy of needs government and overarching social organizations HAVE NO BUSINESS CONSIDERING anything past level two.

All of life beyond level two is individual and personal with only voluntary participation and absolutely no interference by organized coercion of any kind. The reason we diddle with level one and two so much is twofold, they are familiar and easy to play with and we’re not all that inquisitive and bright overall.

Maslow himself was only able to very dimly perceive anything beyond level two, look at the referential descriptions above, they lose clarity and become circular almost immediately. One element conspicuously absent is pursuit of the Godhead, which may be a means of sublimation of the inability to achieve a state of being beyond the first two levels, or not.

Good article . Todd only refers to these levels as a society. On an individual level we can go to much higher levels. Maslow was basically a copycat of Eastern Religion which talks about self and even God Realization. Self actualization is the term he used for Self Realization. Self realization is the I am. I am what? A soul created in the image of God. A being whose growth and splendor has no bounds. It puts us at the beginning stages of learning to be a CoWorker with God. There are even stages of realization beyond Self realization as Spiritual Realization and God Realization. At each stage you become more one with the holy spirit, and at God realization you are completely at one with the holy spirit , and you become the CoWorker with God. This is the ancient teaching of Eckankar, taught since the dawns of time, and documented in,”The Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad.” The other levels, below soul, are referred to as the Astral/emotional, Casual/memory, mental, and etheric/subconscious.
