BREAD, BOMBS, BORROWING & OLYMPICS (CIRCUSES)

FBD requested an Olympic thread. Since this is TBP, I can’t post a thread without making my own social commentary. When I was a child I loved watching the Olympics. But I’m not a child anymore. I’m reminded of a bible passage that reflects my current view of the Olympics:

“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”1 Corinthians 13:11

I now see the Olympics as nothing more than a corporate affair designed to keep the masses distracted. It is the ultimate circus. I did not watch the opening ceremonies. I was out drinking with Avalon at an outdoor bar listening to a decent band. Does anyone else see the ridiculousness and delusion of a broke country, currently in a deep recession, spending $42 million on a 3 hour opening ceremony for a sporting event? I’m just plain tired of the stupidity, willful ignorace, corruption, lies, and delusions that engulf this world.

So here is your Olympic thread FBD. Enjoy.

At least Chicago dodged THIS bullet, thanks in no small part to the public outcry that ensued when it was revealed that the public would pick up the monster share of the cost, which would be enormous. People began to see that the games were only one more conduit by which to funnel billions of dollars of public money into the pockets of crony developers.The London games were already overrunning their budget at the expense of the public.

The disruption and massive displacement of the poor from areas around the proposed site, where they have lived for decades, into other neighborhoods, also were factors in turning the public against siting the 2016 games in Chicago.

The low public approval rating was one of the major factors in the Olympic Committee’s decision to site the 2016 games elsewhere. The committee does not want to bring the games to a community if as much as 50% of the population disapproves, which was the case here. I feel that Chicago dodged a major bullet in “losing” the games.

Seeing Mayor Daley humiliated and defeated at the end of his career was a nice bonus.

Admin. I agree entirely with your commentary. Entirely.

Nevertheless, if a billion people are watching it I feel like I need to also, just to keep up with what the masses enjoy. Soo ,,,

The Openng Ceremony — Some good. Some bad. Mostly blah. No comparison whatsoever to what China did.

What I loved
— the Queen was bored as shit!!! hahaha good for her
[imgcomment image[/img]

What I liked;
—- the Olympic cauldron, steel flowing, to form a ring. pretty cool
—- the rising of the smokestacks
—- Mr Bean in the Chariots of Fire … hilarious
—- most of the music
—- the special lighting effects in the seats

.
What I did not like;
— all that Royal Family bullshit … especially the Queen jumping from the helicopter, all horseshit
— that entire “falling in love” song/dance sequence. no idea WTF that was supposed to be about.

.
What I hated;
— NBC not covering it live … waiting until 7:30 to get better ratings
— NBC’s political commentary … esp. on how all the Brits love having the games (which is bullshit)
— NBC breaking into waaaaay to many commercials … at the worst possible times. it got so bad I stopped watching the Parade of Nations with Canada … dvd’d it … I’ll watch it later

.
What I DESPISED;
— That entire fucking 10 minute political horseshit about England’s health care system … how wonderful it is … my god, talk about ramming political horseshit down one’s throat!!!

.
If you want to read what the Brits think about the opening ceremont in general, and their health care in particular, then just click on the link below … british newspaper … the article is OK … the comments are eye-opening. I would say 95% hated the opening ceremony, and an equal amount hate their health care …………so NBC can go fuck themselves in the arse!

Overall, the opening ceremony was pretty disjointed, too political, and thus generally, the worst one I can remember.

I loved every second of the opening ceremonies! I think it was mostly because I did not see a single second of them. I will try to watch a few selected events but for me, the Olympics seem to be more about sponsorship and the praise heaped on the organizers involved than the actual events or athletes. I’d have probably puked and turned it off when praise for the magnificent healthcare system appeared.

I have treasured the Olympics since I was a kid, too. While I agree that, in the context of world economic Armageddon, the expense of this sports spectacle is unjustified, so is Matt Lauer’s $22 million dollar annual salary for what amounts to reading cue cards. We have arrived at the point where NOTHING makes sense anymore.

Today, I’m not willing to succumb to reality by immersing myself in its jaded waters. It’s the Olympics, dammit. Anyone who is not humbled by the spectacle of athletes from 204 countries, some with total populations less than that of Harrisburg PA, some of which will be below sea level within the next decade, is already living at the bottom of the jade pit. With the disparate backgrounds of these athletes, it is truly extraordinary to contemplate the journeys that each has made to have arrived at this Olympic games. If it doesn’t move you, I suppose you’ll be sticking to alcohol, pharmaceuticals and guns to maintain your sanity.

Of course the expenses for this event are pure madness, but have you seen the FEMA budget? Or Super PAC expeditures? How can the Olympics be considered egregious? At this point, I’ll take an expensive world sporting distraction over a fleet of armed drones swarming American skies.

Why not try shedding the cloak of disdain and doom for the next two weeks and enjoy the Olympics? It might not reflect reality, but It’s a healthier choice than Prozac. Or PBR, or whatever they’re slinging in pints at the local dive.

Admin, I know you and Avalon enjoy those dive bars with the local cover bands, but the fact that that biblical quote resonates with you and your view of the Olympics makes me sad. You’re entitled to your viewpoint, but I am hopeful that there might still be opportunities for you to experience childlike wonder and to be moved by the dedication, talent and effort displayed by international athletes, a great many of whom have never had running water let alone a Nike contract.

And please don’t deny your children the opportunity to revel in the wonder of the Games just because you’ve “outgrown” it. This is just what I need right now, and it might be just what they need, too.

Uh, Jim…I think people are starting to get the impression that we are always hanging out in dive bars. This is not true! I think this was the first time we’ve gone out since vacation. And we went out during vacation a few times because it was, well, vacation….. 🙂 Other than that, we don’t get out much…… really, we don’t….

Stop the Olympics!

Let us boycott the Olympic games. All of this “competition” and “individual achievement” makes me want to throw up. I hate them I tell you. The worst part is the medal ceremonies with the “individual winners” elevated above everyone else. What, is this some kind of Kapitalistic propaganda???? They didn’t win that, “somebody else made that happen!” They didn’t build the gyms, pools and the running tracks. They merely benefited from what we have built for them. It’s time to end this talk of “individual achievement”. Dear Leader should go immediately to London and attend each and every ceremony and point out that “Somebody else made that happen!” If something isn’t done soon, there’s no telling what might happen.

I remain,

Avalon, please know that my reference to dive bars was purely in the context of Jim’s original post.

I am not under the impression that you and Jim enjoy dive bars frequently, but merely that you enjoy them. And I’m the last person on earth who would hold that against you.

I was simply struck by the biblical quote and the implication that growing up equates to dumping childlike things like the Olympics in favor of grown-up things like dive bars. And that struck me as a sad concept.

The fact that your kid is going to Boy Scout Camp is absolutely fantastic. Of course you shouldn’t keep him home to watch the Olympics. Unplugging is the healthiest option for the modern psyche, and I think it is especially critical for children to be able to power down the digital world for extended periods of time.

In lieu of the healthy option, I will be heading to the dive bar later. Likely will be watching the Olympics there, as my local pub has live music only on Thursdays.

indiejen:

It’s been my impression that Admin is a cheap bastard. Accordingly, it is not out of the question, and probably very likely, that he would drink where beer and well drinks cost no more than $1 each. Hence, he most likely frequents dive bars, where mullet clad ’80s cover bands play too loud, but everyone is too drunk to notice. You, madam, are correct and need not apologize or explain to anyone.

It’s funny, actually, everyone thinks the Great Britain proper is shelling out the $2 billion for the Olympics, but in reality, we stuck it in the backdoor of a loan to Ireland from the IMF. Nobody’s the wiser, but you didn’t hear it from me.

We love the Irish!

USA woman’s soccer dominates Columbia. What an awesome, dominating team. How can one not enjoy watching them?

I can’t wait until they play North Korea next week. Although I feel sorry for them. They’ll probably be exectued when they get home. Seriously. The announcers said there is not one player on this team from the 2008 team.

I want to have sex with Hope Solo, the USA goalkeeper. We’d be a perfect match. I’m very very good at solo sex.

There’s a lot of fucking going on during the Olympics. Tthe Olympic organizing committee is providing 150,000 condoms. There are 10,000 athletes = 15 condoms per person. That’s gold medal territory there.

Below is the USA woman powerlifter. She’s favored to take home the Gold medal. I’m guessing she’s also going home with all 15 condoms …. unless she runs into AWD.

I’d prefer to watch opening ceremonies in Chicago. The shootings alone would be worth the price of admission. Although a venue in Philadelphia with Jim hawking watermelon in the stands would be worth watching too.

If you guys like Coronas, try a Dos Equis Amber, no lime needed.

Corona without the skunk, and has a sexy, boomer spokesman.

I quit caring about the Olympics when it changed from every four years, to this bullshit every two.

Diveish bars rule. No pretensions, all fun. Time to go visit one, or three, soon.

Spain, favored to win the Gold in Soccer. They would have been the only team in history to hold 1) the World cup, 2) European Cup, and 3) Olympic Gold … all at the same time.

But……………. they won’t even get out of Group play. The game against Honduras was a heart-breaker —- for them. Lost 1-0. Squandered dozens of chances. Great soccer game.

Yeah, I know, who gives a shit. Me. I just love seeing prima dona’s LOSE!!!
