I believe the changes in musical excellence over the ages reflect the downward changes in education and ability too. For example, C17 and C18 saw the age of technical excellence – no “electronics” so those who were expected to produce great music had to be technically impeccable. We see this excellence extended to the orchestral staff too – they HAD to “know their stuff”.
1960 – 1980? Arrival of affordable electronics, but the musicians still had to have pretty significant skills, and composition was still much in the forefront. The era of such memorable groups as Rush, Motorhead, Hawkwind, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Led Zep., and Judas Priest to name just a few.
Fast forward to today? Seems the “big players” are either Rap “Artists”, or those DJ’s who have made themselves a name (and a considerable fortune) on the Night Club circuit doing “Re-Mixes” of pre-existing works, along with a spot of distortion courtesy of today’s electronics. Note that the ability to play an instrument (any instrument) has now become a very non-essential requirement of today’s music scene.
Yet, there are scores of excellent modern Classical Musicians still “out there”, so maybe there is still hope for mankind!!
