The government will slowly take it away from you anyway through taxes, inflation, fees, licenses, tolls, tickets for violations, forced buying of what was voluntary (Obomber care), confiscation, bail – ins (like in Cyprus), … until there’s nothing left.
Government support programs make it possible for even the declining middle class to survive. Those programs also mean that our “poverty” people are poor, not in poverty. It’s not poverty if you have TV, cell phones, cigarettes and booze.

Brazil has been going through a ramped-up version of our own situation for a few years… I believe the protests and riots started back in 2012, when income equality between average citizen and the “ruling elite” demonstrated the level of government corruption. They got the 2013 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic Games, further funneling money from social programs into the pockets of the connected; the corruption and graft is rampant.
Because the government needed more and more money to operate, they raised taxes to something like 40%. Yet social programs still didn’t feed the poor or needy, prompting them to increasingly cry for more. After all, they don’t have “world reserve status,” so it’s not like they can do what the US did with monetary policy.
Overall, the citizens became more and more angry at government corruption, embezzlement and lack of accountability. The riots really started to take hold in summer 2013, but they keep escalating. It’s truly one of those, “when the people have nothing left to lose, they lose it” situations. It’s going to get a lot uglier before it gets better.
And the very same may happen here, if things keep going as they are.

ANTIOCH, Tenn. – A man has been sent to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself at a Davidson County Walmart.
The shooting happened at the Walmart on 3035 Hamilton Church Road in Antioch around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Company officials confirmed the man was at a cash register when he shot himself in the leg with his concealed weapon as he was checking out.
The man was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
