I love a good shit-fest. Started a few myself. But, shitfests used to be about OPINIONS. One would call someone an asshole for believing this or that in one thread, and be civil in the next thread, or the next day.

I was attracted to TBP because the readers/commenters seemed to be above some of the silly backbiting I’ve seen on sites with a wider reading. Perhaps, it is a virus that replicates throughout the world we inhabit online.

I’ll not name names or monikers, since it is hard to tell who is really who around here, with all the doppling stuff going on. The shit-fests on TBP are legendary. No telling what will set one off… an insult catches someone the wrong way on the wrong day and the thread turns into 300 posts of variations of “Fuck you!”. And the bad blood, too. Certain folks have arch-enemies here, for one reason or another. Others encourage chaos simply because they can.
Most times, Jim posts good stuff. I confess a lot of the highly-detailed, heavy duty economic stuff – complete with charts and graphs – is way over my pay grade. But I trust him. And most folks behave reasonably civil… most of the time…
This isn’t a place for prudes. You need to wear a cup if you’re going to stick around long term… and have a thick skin. When you get people with strong personalities in the same place, there will be conflict. The stronger the personalities, the greater the conflict.
I don’t fault Stuck for just saying fuck it, taking his ball and going home…. I have days when I just don’t want to put up with the stupid shit. It’s the same shit from the same assholes, over and over… geez, even me and Stuck tore into each other last week for a whole thread. It got ugly. But that’s rare… next day, it was business as usual. I am feeling a lot like Stuck says he is in his post above. I truly understand his position, and have noticed he is losing patience. Go figure, given the quality of some of the posters at the moment – who could add tuf, but instead choose to crap on everything in sight, as a general truism.

I’d have to agree with you. The comment stream has gone down hill. It’s a shame, because the visitor counts are the highest in TBP history and they are seeing some pretty lame comments. You, Stuck, SSS, Hope, and a few other of the long-timers are the only comments worth reading. I skip about 70% of the comments just based on the person making the comment.
There’s not much I can do about it. I’m not going to moderate or babysit the monkeys. I’m too tired by life to do any more. I already sacrifice weekends writing the infrequent articles I’m able to do. It gets less fun by the day.

This site has an incredible purpose, a history to be admired, and has attracted many, many very worthy contributors. The newbies have somehow missed the point. We fight, but we fight over IDEAS. We crucify idiots, for bad ideas. We crucify each other for the tiniest variations in perspective from our own. We prod on occasion just for fun. But I have never seen folks that just out and out throw shit for no reason whatsoever.
But we post facts, figures, supporting docs, quotes, graphs, etc, to support the variations, and then call each other dumb motherfuckers. Without the ideas and facts and opinions, it is not adding value to each other.
Hell, RE and I were mortal enemies. But we fought, largely, on ideas. (His ideas sucked, but you have to hand it to him, he is not stupid). You and Smokey fought over China. You and SSS over drug laws. We all learned things.
I hope we can get back to that. These guys can contribute. They have to understand that first there needs to be the idea, then the fight.

I have chewed on several of those I mentioned above. AWD persevered – he had something he wanted to say, and he was bound and determined to say it (ad nauseum at times!). And we had great fun with him – ridiculing him with my pic of the monkey proctologist was an all time classic, if I do say so myself!
But if folks come just to fight, and add nothing, there is little the remaining big dogs can do. If they do not put up ideas, then there is little left for us. I can bark til I am hoarse, but they like it. They think that is the only game in town – they do not understand why the site exists, and what it can offer,and that rather than being a place of doom and gloom (it certainly is that at times), it is also a place where folks come together to see hope – that there are other folks that understand, and that perhaps something can be salvaged or raised from the ashes.
We can still run off the random nutters, and do at times, I am sure.
So I can only again ask folks to contribute value first, and fight as an adjunct to that. And to keep humor and wit and information flowing in the fights. The fights will at times turn nasty, but that goes with the territory.
And despite the run ins with some to whom I am/was diametrically opposed – I regret their absences, if they were people of ideas. That means Clammy, for instance. She was ALWAYS wrong, but she brought ideas – which we sorely need more of. I never wanted her to abandon ship. The article about the pit bulls could have been a classic shit fight – opposing sides fighting with actual ideas. But nope, it was a stinking pile of shit instead.
So, in my opinion, unless folks quite being dicks and start fighting about ideas rather than just screaming all the time, this place will not be what it can be.

I’d have to agree with you. The comment stream has gone down hill. It’s a shame, because the visitor counts are the highest in TBP history and they are seeing some pretty lame comments. You, Stuck, SSS, Hope, and a few other of the long-timers are the only comments worth reading. I skip about 70% of the comments just based on the person making the comment.
There’s not much I can do about it. I’m not going to moderate or babysit the monkeys. I’m too tired by life to do any more. I already sacrifice weekends writing the infrequent articles I’m able to do. It gets less fun by the day.

I will attempt to do more. I understand your frustration. These clowns come around to fight but not add a damn thing. This site has an incredible purpose, a history to be admired, and has attracted many, many very worthy contributors. The newbies have somehow missed the point. We fight, but we fight over IDEAS. We crucify idiots, for bad ideas. We crucify each other for the tiniest variations in perspective from our own. We prod on occasion just for fun. But I have never seen folks that just out and out throw shit for no reason whatsoever.
But we post facts, figures, supporting docs, quotes, graphs, etc, to support the variations, and then call each other dumb motherfuckers. Without the ideas and facts and opinions, it is not adding value to each other.
Hell, RE and I were mortal enemies. But we fought, largely, on ideas. (His ideas sucked, but you have to hand it to him, he is not stupid). You and Smokey fought over China. You and SSS over drug laws. We all learned things.
I hope we can get back to that. These guys can contribute. They have to understand that first there needs to be the idea, then the fight.

I have chewed on several of those I mentioned above. AWD persevered – he had something he wanted to say, and he was bound and determined to say it (ad nauseum at times!). And we had great fun with him – ridiculing him with my pic of the monkey proctologist was an all time classic, if I do say so myself!
But if folks come just to fight, and add nothing, there is little the remaining big dogs can do. If they do not put up ideas, then there is little left for us. I can bark til I am hoarse, but they like it. They think that is the only game in town – they do not understand why the site exists, and what it can offer,and that rather than being a place of doom and gloom (it certainly is that at times), it is also a place where folks come together to see hope – that there are other folks that understand, and that perhaps something can be salvaged or raised from the ashes.
We can still run off the random nutters, and do at times, I am sure.
So I can only again ask folks to contribute value first, and fight as an adjunct to that. And to keep humor and wit and information flowing in the fights. The fights will at times turn nasty, but that goes with the territory.
