Americans, being an insouciant people, are unaware that it was Russians, not England’s Wellington, who defeated Napoleon. The Grande Army did not return from Russia. The loss broke the back of French military power.
The German Wehrmacht, which in a few days overran France and drove the British off the continent, was destroyed in Russia by the Red Army. The allied invasion of Normandy encountered only a few under-strength German units deprived of fuel. The German army and all available resources were on the Russian front.
Americans played a small role in the war against Hitler. Eisenhower cleverly waited until the Red Army had defeated Hitler, and then invaded long after the tide had turned against Germany. Today Washington claims credit for winning a war in which Washington’s role was small.
The US has not won a war since the defeat of Japan. The US was defeated by Third World armies in Korea and in Vietnam.
After 14 years in Afghanistan the US has been defeated by a few lightly armed Taliban. After 8 years, half of Iraq is in the hands of the militant Islamic State. Washington has squandered trillions of dollars on wars that Washington has lost, while the US economy and living standards declined as a result of the trillions of dollars wasted on futile wars. The neoconsevative warmongers responsible for this disaster still control both US political parties. These crazed warmongers are driving America to America’s final defeat.
I worked with President Reagan to end the Cold War and to established friendship with the Russians. The George H. W. Bush administration and its Secretary of State James Baker held to the agreement. But all subsequent regimes have violated it. The neoconsevatives displaced the old Republican Establishment and the Reagan Republicans. The neocons have also prevailed among the Democrats, so there is no political competition. Warmongers control US foreign policy.
American police apply the same gratuitous violence to the American population that the American military applies to foreign populations. Abroad the violence has swelled the ranks of those Washington sought to quell. Within the US police violence is turning Americans themselves into enemies. I’m not suggesting that. Raping women or enslaving children does not win wars. However, it tends to be an unpleasant byproduct of the absolute ruthlessness that does win wars. In theory you could have an army that was sufficiently ruthless to win, but didn’t rape the vanquished women. In fact, the US did OK on this issue in WWII – our troops were not 100% pure, but they did far, far less raping and general abuse than the Soviet troops did, or the Nazi troops had done a few years earlier in act 1. There was definitely some raping by US troops, and quite a lot of vengeance killings (in violation of the “laws of war”) that mostly went unpunished, but on the whole far less than the Soviets, in particular. So, that’s great. This is a historical aberration and while it is sort of something to be proud of (like getting a “C” in a class that everyone else failed), the US as a whole seems to have lost its will to fight effectively – mostly because of politicians in Washington.
@TE: I agree 100% that the US shouldn’t be creating foreign entanglements, fighting foreign wars or choice, or basically doing everything that the Founding Fathers recommended that we not do. How is your vote counting these days?

Yea, well my dad’s Toro mower crapped out. He called TWO lawn-guys to do the job … both promised to be there …. neither showed up. I guess business must be good when you can tell actual customers to fuck-off. Now the grass is about a foot high in some places, no shit. So, I gotta pick up the 80 pound John Deere mower and put it in the trunk — by myself, as Ms Freud is useless in that area — not that 80 pounds is all that heavy, but it’s very bulky, of course.
Plus, both my forearms are literally raw in some spots due to two days of bleaching and scrubbing down the house. Sure, I could have gone to rent-a-center and rented a power washer. But, again, who helps me get it out of the trunk (if it even fits) and then helps me put it back in?
I’m as sore as you … and in some pain. It will take two days at my parent’s house … lots of weeding and trimming and mulching as well. See ya Saturday or Sunday, if I’m still with the living.

Hey, Bea, the cold Pacific air brought in a cloud cover all over the valley. Since we don’t really have any tall buildings, you can see fron one end of the valley to the other end in every direction and it was all covered with interesting clouds that reminded me of summer in Rantoul watching the thunderclouds exchanging lightning between them. We had a real neat lightning storm like that a couple years ago, the lightning hit a couple of poles (we live in the desert and the poles are higher than anything around) they were glowing like hot charcoal at the top, one of them actually was cut so that the topmost part was dangling from its wires. The desert is no drier than usual, there are still jackrabbits, coyotes and ravens all around. The tumbleweeds are green and growing, everything else just looks brown. The desert had a few days of wildflowers, they are short-lived and will sow seeds for next year. Around February or March, the desert bushes give off a nice scent, almost like lavender, on cool damp mornings – which gives the place a magical atmosphere. We didn’t get our usual Sep or Feb rains. This rain we got today looks nice, the clouds are hanging low like they do when it is going to snow. It might snow in Tehachapi, they are high enough at around 4000 feet. Sorry for the disorganized writing.

If we all lived in the same place I would be your personal trainer, I would change your life. I train hard but it’s on again off again related to work and when I decide to shut down and drink beer for a few days. Anyway eat clean and workout you’ll live longer, if that’s a concern.

The goal of the U.S. Is not to win a war in the Middle East it’s to create chaos and confusion and to keep a legitimate power from being able to function. Mr. Roberts do I need to produce pictures of the devastation the U.S. Brought to Japan in the 1940’s is your mind capable of understanding how technology has progressed in 60 fucking years. If the U. Z the fucking point is the U.S. Has not even come close to unleashing it’s total fucking air power on the Middle East it would crumble within days. Our long range Stealth Bombers can rain absolute hell from the sky far above the range of conventional air defense weapons.
Z why were they retreating. They could not fucking believe what was coming at them. Do you remember how few American lives were lost and how many Iraqs were killed as we took the Capital, the U.S military walked through them like the did not exist.

The US has destroyed, Iraq, Syria and Libya, either by direct attack or through proxies, not only creating jihadistans, but also multiple humanitarian disasters. Does this really give you a sense of pride?
I don’t want to see the middle east crumble. I want it to be a place where many tribes and religions lived in relative peace for many centuries, prior to the discovery of oil and Israel.

My opinion is that the worst thing that could have happened to Iraq, other than the US invasion, was for either of his sons to succeed Saddam. That possibility was their problem, not ours.
I just hate when people say the U.S military lost in the Middle East when it’s true power was never unleashed. We got a glimpse of it in 91 when General Schwarzkopf rolled up the entire Country of Iraq inside a week. People like the author of this thread have no idea or the imagination to realize what a total War in the Middle East prosecuted by the U.S would look like. I’ve laid it out above it would look like the Highway of death 91. All done from the air, total death on the ground, and very few if any American casualties. Either go balls deep or don’t go. That what I say.

The sunni vs shia conflict is nothing. It comes down to the belief of shias that Ali succeeded the prophet. It is less of a dispute than between catholics and protestants.

I appreciate the advice, but I didn’t say I was sore because I’m using muscles I’m not used to.
I’m in pain because my back is shot and – for some reason only God knows – out of nowhere my right hip joint has had shooting pains on occasion. Like being stabbed with an ice pick. No clue why. Doc says it could be a bone chip or arthritis.
Muscle wise, I’m strong as an ox. Always have been. Lifting free weights my whole life and lots of roadwork will do that. It’s the joints that are the problem. Already taking that glucosamine stuff… it sort of helps. So does aspirin. And so does the Doc at the VA chopping the nerves in my back with a microwave needle.
Per the highway of death. I was there. That was not all done from the air. Alot was done by our abrams tanks and other weapons at ground level, and with over the horizon shots. I SAW that burned out dude in the picture in person. He was still smoking, as were the rest of them. There was far worse. One in particular is etched behind my eyes. As they were hit from the air we were on them perpendicular at ground level. 1 cav motherfuckers. That wasnt all technology. Some of that was straight up anger. LRSD in the house. Be a young man in the military and see if you can avoid the indoctrination. We were there to hate and kill, so thats what we did.

In addition to what Bea Lever recommends, add 3 mg per day of Boron and use “Magnesium oil” (Google it) every evening; it is applied to the skin and your body absorbs the magnesium more effectively than pill form. While you are at it, add small doses (up to 500 mcg) of nascent iodine per day (that kind can be taken orally) or there is an iodine that you can also roll onto your skin (bottom of your feet) that also works. There is more and more research showing that all of these elements are needed for proper absorption and distribution of calcium in the body and after taking the above for several months, many types of arthritis, hardening of the arteries (due to calcium being deposited in the wrong places) and numerous other things get a lot better. It is working for me and my wife. She has arthritis and used to take pain meds all the time (luckily not the narcotic type) but is now down to one pill of naproxen before bed and that is it.
Oh yeah, while you are at it, add up to a table spoon or two of 50/5o mix of powdered ginger and tumeric that you ix with whole fat yogurt or milk (organic preferably). Those compounds have dramatic anti inflammatory properties, anti-carcinogen and other good things.
My two cents, works for us. Have never felt better. In my mid 50s and without that stuff my right knee would be very painful (I know as I have run out a couple times) but with it, only a twinge two or three times per week.
