A few years ago a derecho storm wisked through my town and felled many of the stately oaks along the streets of the picturesque downtown neighborhoods. It was hard to fathom how these seemingly sturdy trees could be destroyed by one hour of high winds. The thing is, they had rotted from the inside. Many were hollow. All it took was one strong storm to destroy many of them. I fear the USA is analogous to those trees: hollow and rotten. It won’t take much to destroy what’s left. It seems like we’re bouncing along the bottom as it is. God help us.
Starfuck, the rabbit hole goes deeper than that, we reuse black victims and organ donor body parts for general body parts replacement. Doc just goes to the cadaver room and picks a part. Now that folks can transplant faces, won’t be long before we will have to carry ID verifying why you are white but have a black face. Or black with a white swizzle stick.

RE: Oak trees. In our town they go out of the way to keep them standing. Cables to support branches, cables to keep the trees from tipping, build roads and parking lots around them. Yet they rot from the inside and when they go the tend to explode. Two examples:
My wife was driving down an oak lined street where we used to live. Beautiful trees. Suddenly, she heard a load bang!! Tree literally exploded right after she passed. Another where a parking lot was built around a 200 +/- year old tree. Huge area was kept around the drip line of the tree. One day it too literally exploded. Down it went, nothing but a stump.
These trees look beautiful on the outside, stately even, but are rotten to the core…….

From my travels it appears that the dying tree problem is much worse on the east coast and industrial midwest than it is elsewhere.

@IS: I’ve seen similar in central Colorado. Also “bark beetle”, but more recent research indicates that the beetle has been there for centuries, and it’s merely a sign of tree death, not the cause. The blog I linked connects ground level ozone with tree death, and I think it’s a fairly convincing case.
