Lysander, I think the same things about “how far they have fallen.” But also remember – the successful Vikings became Normans and/or residents of the British Isles, along with a variety of rulers in medieval Spain and Italy. After many centuries, their descendants became the conquerors of North America, Australia and a handful of other places, and many of the NA ones kept moving west. In each case, those who stayed in one spot were either firstborn sons with something to inherit, or lazy, and the ones who migrated and came to be called by a new name were non-lucky, non-lazy types. By circuitous route, the locals of much of the American west, midwest, and Texas are partial descendants of those capable Vikings. Which shouldn’t surprise you that much comparing the reputed behaviors of the groups.
In comparison, today’s inhabitants – or really I should say the c. 1990 inhabitants – of Norway, Sweden, Denmark etc. are people who stayed put through some combination of good luck, laziness or lack of military skill, and while they are the homelands of the famous terrors, it’s not all that surprising that today they resemble something quite different. Only in Iceland can you find people who are basically direct descendants of Vikings, though generally not the most successful of the Vikings.
Likewise, and through somewhat different routes, a lot of the most capable of the English and Germans emigrated, primarily to North America (both US and Canada) but also a few other places of less significance.
It may be time for the distant descendants of the golden years of Europe to go back and set things right, so we can at least visit as tourists and see the land of our ancestors without dealing with middle eastern style hassles.

Back during the Clinton administration there was a boat load of fully automatic AK 47’s caught being smuggled into L.A. through the port along with other goods. Most people either didn’t pay attention to it or have forgotten about it (like that covert Navy AK 47 silencer operation last year – why did/does the Navy need 349 untraceable AK 47 silencers?).
I’ve always suspected these were going to be cached somewhere for future distribution to gangs, revolutionaries or some other violent anti American militants.
I wonder how many got through then and have gotten through since and how many warehouses full of them are secreted away somewhere just waiting for the right moment to distribute them to the right people.

Well, the truth is guys, most people are like sheep, ourselves included. We follow ideas and people who appeal to us, in one way or another. Some of us have a better ability to spot inconsistencies, call it critical thinking, which allows us to distinguish bullshit to a greater degree than others. That said, most people follow without a great degree of thinking nowadays, maybe always have. Of course they think they think it’s all their choice, because the misinformation they have manipulates them by making them think that they are doing what’s right, but the reality is not what they are sold. When shit gets worse, they are sold a news bunch of shit. Some eventually get it. Some don’t. See any current political acceptance speech for evidence.
Back in the day people were the way they were, because their leaders had a sense of purpose for their people. They had a conscience. Nowadays, it doesn’t matter. It’s about control by a relatively small group who are not affected by any of the crap they orchestrate for the avg person.
So it’s no mystery. The powers that be found out a good while ago that a human brain can be conditioned to much the same degree that any other animal, thanks to neuroplasticity, and so, once brave people, have been brought to where they are now. Science can be good and bad indeed. Perhaps I’m wrong…we’ll see.
