This may look insane but as someone that lives in S. California right on the boardwalk by the pier, I can tell you that this guy is not cherry picking responses. If anything, he had to cherry pick responses that resembled something other than gibberish.

There will be no “safe spaces” unless you create, maintain and defend them yourself. Otherwise, the lack of military engineers in society ensures that most of them will be overrun in the first 24 hours, or somewhat later if there are enough of them to satiate demand for supplies before they are all overrun.
Think: lack of cover for riflemen in the surroundings, clear lanes of fire for the defenders, walls that can stop sniper bullets (and possibly resist / deflect small arms explosives [grenades, RPGs]), observation posts high and armored, strategic ditches / barriers / channels to prevent wide-area attacks and prevent mass charges, limited access / rugged terrain. Where you build is at least as important as how you build, and cities are less desirable (due to lack of open fields of fire) than countryside. Finally, always have an egress designed, in case traitors open the gates before you can shoot them.
