All Winter three moles lay hidden inside their maze of tunnels. Finally spring came and the new shoots penetrated the tunnel walls indicating that it was safe to venture out into the world above the ground. The three moles dug their way upwards finally breaking through to the fresh air. The first mole poked his head out and called back to his brothers. “I smell the fresh earth.” He then climbed out of the hole to be followed by the second mole who paused to say “I smell the blooming flowers and the sweet grass.” From behind him the third mole opined, “All I can smell is Mole Asses.”

Those innocent people that died ……….. what a strange and unanticipated way to go.

My grandmother told me about this years ago, she lived less than a quarter of a mile from where the tank was when it burst, lucky for her (and me) she lived in Charlestown and not the North End.

Just think of the lost rum. Oh the humanity.
