The Electric Greaseman

Guest Post by Eric Peters

If you lived in the DC area during the ’80s, you will remember the Fall of the Greaseman.

Now living in obscurity – and, apparently, poverty – in a tiny West Virginia town, the Greaseman was one of the country’s best-known (and highest-paid) radio “shock jocks.” He ruled the morning drive at DC101 FM, at the time the most popular album rock radio station in the nation’s capital.

He was better-known than Howard Stern.

Today, he is unknown.

Because unlike Stern, the Grease . . . apologized.

He made a couple of obnoxious jokes – one about the Martin Luther King Day Holiday, the other about the musical talents of a rapper – which his audience loved but which also aroused the enmity of the professionally aggrieved, who even then were a force to be reckoned with.

They demanded the Greaseman’s head – and he gave it to them.

Instead of continuing to do his thing – which his audience loved – and telling his critics to change the channel or something even less polite (as Howard Stern is famous for doing… and who is, as a result, still famous) the Grease bowed his head, did the perp shuffle with Al Sharpton and other professional grievance-mongers and, rather than forgiveness, received pain . . . followed by obscurity.

He lost his job, his fortune, everything.

VW could learn something – but clearly has not.

Last week, the genuflecting Germans announced a $2 billion “investment” (yes, they used that word) in “zero emissions vehicle awareness programs and infrastructure,” part of its embarrassingly servile efforts to recover Good Standing with Uncle. Who remains much-annoyed with VW over the company’s dastardly “cheating” on EPA emissions tests.

And who will never, ever forgive – or forget.

Meanwhile, VW’s customers will no longer get what they loved – affordable, high-mileage diesel-powered vehicles. They are gone like the Grease – and not because people didn’t love them.

Instead, the company will throw money at electric car “fast” chargers in urban areas –  which are “fast” like Forrest Gump wasn’t stupid. Maybe “fast” vs. how long it takes to charge up an electric car via a standard 115V household outlet (which is several hours at least). But still at least 30-45 minutes, or five times as long as it takes to gas up a not-electric car.

Further extortions – and that’s what all this amounts to – include four $500 million “investments” in “green” initiatives in California, such as a “zero emissions” shuttle bus/transit program and electric car ride-sharing.

Does it work? Does it make sense? No one cares. So long as it is “green” any amount of green expended is never enough – much like apologizing for a “racially insensitive” remark.

VW has also committed to adding three new electric vehicles to its product portfolio – which it needs, in terms of making money, like JFK needed another head shot. It has promised to sell 5,000 of them annually by 2020.

God knows how.

It could not give away the one electric car it has in its lineup – the miserable electric Golf. A car that needed to be delivered on a flatbed to car journalists who lived more than 70 miles from the press pool – because the car couldn’t make it there on its own steam. Actually, steam power would work better. It doesn’t take hours or even 30 minutes to top off a steam-powered vehicle with water.

And they go fast and for a long time, too.

But VW is going to do what everyone else is doing- or trying to do: Build more too-expensive, economically untenable, functionally impaired cars that the market hasn’t got much use for but which the government is determined to force down everyone’s throats.

Only even more so, to make atonement for the sin of “cheating” Uncle for the sake of its customers.

VW has lost its nerve – and maybe its mind.

Or maybe not.

The New Economy isn’t about earning money by making things people want and selling it to them at a price they can afford and which makes an honest profit for the company. It is about “working with” the government, to force-feed people what government bureaucrats decree they may have.

Lately, at a loss.

The whole unspeakable mess will be subsumed under a new in-house Electrify America LLC – which will be based snuggle-close to Uncle in the DC suburb of Reston, Virginia.

Just as the Grease imagined that posing stoop-shouldered with Al and Jesse would stifle the calls for his head and make friends out of implacable enemies who would remain enemies no matter what he did, so VW deludedly thinks that embracing the electric car tar baby will get Uncle to soften and maybe even smile.

Good luck with that.

Man, I remember the greaseman. Hilarious and honest. It’s going to be a long re-learning curve for people to understand what honesty and truth is and how political correctness is all BS.

Grease was Fired for saying approximately “kill four more and call it a week” on MLK day.
Fired by the same city that fired Michael Savage last Fall.
The WMAL 2016 audience and WWDC 1985-ish audience are the same people, just 30+ years older.
There are some things the radio station license owners will not let people hear or think about; how did they get to hold those licenses for so many decades ? Thats where ya’ look for the deepest corruption.

There are a lot of alternatives to conventional engines other than electrics (particularly battery powered electrics) and have been for a long time.

Here’s news on one from quite a while ago that showed great promise but just sort of disappeared from sight: https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1301&dat=19700820&id=8MBWAAAAIBAJ&sjid=J-UDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6616,7555889

The entire technology ended up being quashed for some reason instead of put into production in the 1972 Datsuns it was intended for. Hard to dind any information on why.

It has high torque but, slow RPMs.

Built on the same principle as this:

That’s what transmissions are generally used for, torque to rpm or rpm to torque conversions.

BTW, sippy bird doesn’t have much torque at all (yes, that’s nitpicking), and uses a different principle of operation based on the steam engine (which it is, just not using water as the medium).

Uhm, No.

The drinking bird uses methylene chloride.

The drinking bird is a heat engine that exploits a temperature difference to convert heat energy to a pressure difference within the device, and performs mechanical work. Like all heat engines, the drinking bird works through a thermodynamic cycle.

Just like Minto’s engine.

Much more in common with a steam turbine engine than a sippy bird that works off of heated gasses changing the weight distribution within the body of the bird.

I think you’re thinking of the Minto Wheel which has more in common with a water wheel -or a sippy bird- than a steam driven engine.

Thanks for clearing that up.

From reading the first article newspaper article about Nissan, it reads as though the gasses were condensed and then were recompressed but did not mention any other power source. So, it seemed as though the only outside source of energy could be ambient temperatures.
Also, I did know about the Minto wheel and yes, that is very much like the drinking bird.
After a bit more investigation, it seems Minto and his father, Wallace Milton Minto, stockpiled more than 50 tons of uranium rich ore in Sparta, NJ.

Maybe that is why so many people are stuck in NJ?

” “kill four more and call it a week” on MLK day.”

That was an old joke back in my day in public school, along with shaking someone’s hand and saying “Hello, my name is Abraham Lincoln and I pronounce you a free negro”.
This one was my favorite “What is a Super Yankee? A yankee from New York that moves down here, marries a negro, then moves back to New York”.
Oh the good old days, we even carried our knives to school and threw them between each other’s feet.
Shoot man, I even drove the school bus when I was sixteen years old. Can you imagine that today?

The auto companies should learn from Exxon and just drag any legal case out. I think Exxon is still litigating the Exxon Valdez oil spill ( caused by a negligent captain) and public opinion, enraged at the time, can cool and even change over the years.

In the case of VW there was never much public outrage. I thought VW was rather clever with its software ‘solution’ to EPA emission tests, but there never was any ‘danger’ to the public unlike GM’s ignition switch or Takata’s airbags.

As to VWs ‘green’ contributions, the LA rapid transit system just announced its ridership has fallen 6% in the past year. This despite extending its light rail system. The problem is the buses. Nobody with an alternative wants to ride them because it is dangerous and they are slow. People will commute via light rail if it is convenient to do so but public transit outside of that narrow situation is a waste of time and money. Nobody wants to be outside in the cold and dark waiting for a bus that, as likely as not, will be full of the dregs of society when it arrives.

Greaseman replaced Howard Stern on DC101 when Stern took a job in New York. I wasn’t fond of Stern, I had a weekend college job that also had a little Monday morning shift, and everybody in my office listened to Stern, who was just local then. Fifty or so people, some liked him, some hated him, but they all listened to him. That impressed me.

I suspect part of the problem with VW caving instead of fighting is the demographic of their customer. Most of VW’s customers, with some exceptions, are young millennial and liberal. Maybe not as liberal as a Subaru customer, but getting there. Just check out the flower that I swear came as an option on the bug when it first came out. The “greenies” are their target market. I am sure some marketing guy and an executive got together and thought it would be a good idea to “atone” for their “sins” or else lose the millennial liberal sheeple demographic. They apparently think this atonement is going to help. Its not going to. As the author states, it never does. They should have fought this tooth and nail, and told Uncle to STFU. Unfortunately, VW is way too pussified to do that.
Now, I suspect Mercedes Benz may have said “nein” to the US Gubermint, as their demographic seems to be more business men, oil shieks, and other producers without such a starry eyed liberal bent. I doubt “fuel economy” or liberals is their target market when they have cars like the S500 Maybach or C65 AMG with real V8 engines, superchargers (Kompressor) and curb weights that only come from real steel. Unfortunately, I am sure at some point the “greenies” are going to force even MB to start making atonement for having real cars in their lineup….sad.

The government is an intimidator. The only way to deal with an intimidator is to say FU, kick them in the balls (not necessarily in that order), and keep going after them until they leave you alone. Eric’s right, VW definitely used the wrong strategy.

Eric is back at it again making it sound like the American consumer was beating down the doors of every VW dealer far and wide for an oil burner. That just isn’t true at all.

There were 80,000 VW diesel registrations in 2014 (before scandal) across all their models. Even better, diesel vehicles were only 21% of VW sales that year, i.e. 8 of 10 people walking into a VW dealer left with a petrol powered car. ALL the VW vehicles affected over the multi-year span is only +/-400,000 units. By comparison America’s best selling passenger car (Toyota Camry) sells on average over 400,000 units EVERY YEAR.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t necessarily agree with the gov’t on this one. That being said, is anyone crying about the loss of the VW diesel option…sure, but it’s a small minority of vehicle buyers, one of which is obviously our esteemed author. Just saying a little context would be nice.

Do your fuel homework the corn alcholol issue in DC is why highly developed diesel
Engines send Pelosi and the bat shit crazies screaming into the night ! VW proves that a diesel was the way to go for bio fuels and transitional future developments and the D.C. assholes have already committed to a plan that fails to do anything but raise food prices and use more fuel !

I find this whole so called VWgate scandal absolutely ridiculous. As a VW diesel owner I don’t give two shits what the emissions are as long as I don’t leave a black cloud behind me. That’s just blowing money out your tailpipe for those idiots that think rolling coal is cool. Actually I kinda admire VW’s solution to the stupid emission regulations here in the US. I don’t understand why the gov is so hostile to a superior energy source. I would consider Euro think to be inferior to the US but when it comes to diesel they have it right. I wish VW would have told the gov to fuck off! Would they really be any worse off financially? And this paying people thousands that bought these cars because they thought they were buying a green vehicle? You don’t buy a diesel to be green. You buy it for the power and fuel economy. All my vehicles and equipment are diesel and I have been gasoline free for the past few years with no regrets.

Diesel has all kinds of advantages if you don’t live in a cold environment where it has some unique problems with both the fuel and the engine.

Do those new VW diesels lend themselves to mixing a gallon or two of gasoline in the tank with the diesel to make them start and run better in cold climates the way the old ones did?

The Grease was funny a bit insulting if your a whiney little snowflake , he made fun of every thing and every body regardless of race creed religion blah blah …
now on the VW Diesel , an absolutely wonderful efficient high performing economical engine that if left to flourish easily proved it polluted less than the gas engine using excess carbon based fuel thinned out with a Washington cash cow corn / alcholol but let’s not cloud any politically correct horse shit costing taxpayers billions with facts ! The VW engine meet the standards at the time of design and production but the left and right in Washington would have none of that ! Small and medium trucks getting 30 to 40 MPG and medium and small autos doing 50 plus and could be tuned to run on vegetable oil well our Capitol Street , Wall Street and K-Street will have none of that either !

Eric Peters who do you think you are?

This recap of the Greaseman made me ANGRY. Your recall of his legacy is to shame him and focus on his mistakes rather than remember his greatness?
You should be ashamed of yourself.

His legacy is one of originality and taking risks to get there. Where do you have proof of his location and poverty?
BS. You can’t just state that without proof nd expect to be believed.

Greaseman is and was beloved. He was wonderful and to be admired for taking risks and being original. All you want to do is tear him down and focus on negativity which pales in contrast to his greatness. You Sir made a major mistake with this article and should go away.
