Demonizing the Demon (Again)

Guest Post by Eric Peters

People who are jealous of their right to own firearms know how important it is to mercilessly stomp even the slightest suggestion that their right to own a gun be restricted in some manner, no matter how trivial.

Because the principle at stake is critical.

If it is acceptable to chip away at a right because of this – then surely that will follow. It is like the income tax, which people were assured would apply only to “the rich” when it was first proposed.

Now, of course, it applies to everyone.

Portrait of an “automotive journalist.”

Because the principle of taxing people’s earnings was accepted. Once accepted, it was hard to make a principled argument against taxing anyone’s income.

Which brings us to Larry Vellequette.

This guy – a writer for Automotive News – is having a conniption fit over the Dodge Demon.

He believes it is too powerful, too fast; that it is irresponsible for the government to allow people to own it.

And yes, it is powerful – 840 hp.

The current Corvette’s “summer” tires… not the ticket for winter, either.

And it is extremely fast – capable of a single digit quarter-mile run.

But his argument amounts to the same argument used to peddle the income tax – as well as attempts to enact “sensible” restrictions of the right to possess firearms.

Does anyone need 840 hp?

Does anyone need a rifle that holds more than one bullet?

A current-year V6-powered family sedan is quicker and faster than most Ferraris and Porsches were back in the ‘70s. How many families need such performance?

Is it not . . . dangerous?

Any modern sport bike is at least as quick as the Demon – and they are priced such that almost anyone can afford to buy one.

No air bags, either.

Vellequette “…take(s) great issue with the nearly treadless Nitto drag radials that come standard on the $86,090 Challenger SRT Demon.” He sweats their single-minded design, which – though DOT street legal – makes them not-so-great in wet and wintry conditions.

Well, why not also “take issue” with the “summer” ultra-performance tires that are just as single-minded and compromised and also commonly available as factory equipment on numerous other cars?

And have been for years?

Vellequette quotes the paperwork that comes with the Demon: “Drag tires are not recommended for driving in wet weather conditions where there is a risk of hydroplaning.” He also mentioned the very short tread life, a function of the soft compound used to make the tires.

The same warnings accompany “summer” tires – as well as other purpose-specific equipment. Why no warblings from Vellequette about that?

Mustang has launch control, too.

Wait.

He also “took issue with the Demon’s launch control” – an electronic feature that numerous other performance cars also have and which does exactly what it sounds like it does. It uses the car’s electronic systems – in particular, the traction control – to modulate the engine’s power delivery for the smoothest/quickest launch and maximum acceleration.

It is a safety system, designed to keep the car under control vs. fishtailing all over the road.

Vellequette regards this as “unconscionable.”

I find his ignorance even more so – almost as much as his condescension.

Vellequette  does not think it should be “allowed.”

Instead, he favors “ . . . a two minute delay before the launch control would be fully engaged. “ That way, the driver could launch the car in an uncontrolled manner.

This guy – an automotive journalist writing for a publication called Automotive News – does not understand what launch control is. Much less how it works. His worry is that with launch control, “consumers” (loathsome word, suggestive of Jabba The Hut-like creatures gorging at a trough) will be able to “unleash the Demon’s full horsepower every time they pull up next to a Corvette or a Tesla.”

Well, Larry, here’s some news for you: The Demons’ full horsepower is fully available with the launch control off. The system merely optimizes the rest of the car to take fullest advantage of it. It is designed specifically to limit wheelspin – which is the enemy of acceleration – in order to keep the car pointed straight rather than going sideways.

In other words, the car is safer with the launch control engaged.

Vellequette’s editors apparently don’t know this news, either.

PS: The Corvette also has launch control. As do most modern high-performance cars. Larry apparently doesn’t get out much.

He goes on to bemoan “… amateurs who endanger the motoring public every time their manhoods (are) challenged at a stoplight.”

Sounds like Nancy Pelosi talking about firearms, doesn’t it?

And he is just as dangerous.

If the principle that a car more powerful/faster than people “need” (that “need” to be determined, one assumes, by experts such as Larry Vellequette and his like within the government) isn’t stomped to below pavement level before it gets a chance to grab traction, it is as inevitable as the income tax and every other such infringement that, before long, we won’t be allowed to drive anything more potent than a Prius.

Send Automotive News mail. Most especially, Larry Vellequette’s editors.

It’s time they got an earful from us “consumers.”

As Fiat/Chrysler is not going to make a lot of money selling Dodge Demons my guess these ultra powerful cars are as much about letting the engineers and designers at the automakers have a little fun as anything else. To the extent the cars showcase the brand- well no harm in that either but considering the design teams spend most of their time working with corporate bean counters on how to cut costs on the family sedan letting them off the hook to build a few ‘hot’ cars is good for morale.

My sons 14 stingray has launch control. He could not quite wrap his 23 year old brain around how this worked. Enter car guy dad.

We warmed the car up to operating temp ( it will not engage when cold ) and rotated the diL to sport mode. The obligatory warning about safety scrolled across the DIC and the car squatted down even more that its 3.2 inch ride from normal. I pulled the gearshift to first gear with the clutch in and raised rpm to 2100. At this point I told him to watch my feet.

I sidestepped the clutch and stabbed the throttle. At that exact moment a Peterbuilt travelling at 40 miles an hour slammed into his vette with 5100 miles on it.

Well it fucking felt like that.

I have been in fast cars. I have built fast cars. Turns out GM does it better than I ever did.

The launch was spec perfect with just a tripple chirp hirpchirp from the rear tires. Rail straight and all i had to do was bang 2nd and 3rd at the red line and no need to touch the clutch the multiple driveline modules got that part.

You get a chance drive one. Recommend you have your head tucked back in the seat cause it will wind up there anyways.

Vellequette belongs in a government job where he can use government’s power to dictate what everyone can and can’t do.

When did so many fools in this country stop understanding what the word “liberty” means. Let’s just take down the statue in NY Harbor now. I’m sure Putin would be happy to trade one of the no longer needed Lenin statues in Russia for our Lady Liberty.

Let me see if I understand… This Vellequette tool writes an opinion piece & our libertarian absolutist gets his panties in a knot & is hoping to get all of us readers twisted up too.

Last I checked opinions are still like assholes, some smell worse than others, but your own is always the best of the lot. If you dont like the smell, move away from the offensive ass & ignore him rather than posting an operating link to the offending opinion, thus sending the ignorant buffoon clicks.

The camels noise is not just in the tent anymore and it needs to be violently removed . The comment : “No one needs something that ____! Pick a subject , any subject and you will find some group of do gooder’s willing to relinquish your rights to say , think , do or own anything ! Generally someone capable of spending $86 grand on a go fast play toy is not the one speeding to beat or be 2 cars ahead of you at the next stop light . Just like the guy that outfits a firearm for $3 grand is not taking pot shots at congressman . Sadly to often some fool does something violently thoughtless or with malice and forethought (premeditated) and the responsible citzenery are thrown into the same bag . Like income tax as mentioned , the discusting greed of human nature “Your Shit Is Shit BUT My Shit Is Stuff reigns supreme !
Someone who earns income by “capital gains” pays a lower tax then someone who gets their hands dirty earning income , sound fair ? Absolutely not ! I know the reasoning for the lower tax , the money earning the intrest was already taxed at the higher rate so the profit from that money is taxed at a lower rate . Funny how that logic never applies in the reverse . My income only allows me a little trailer get away at the beach in my retirement years so that $5 MILLON oceanfront house should only cost me $25 grand in the intrest of fairness !
I know Dream on …! Equality of treatment in American society has been twisted like an unrecognizable pretzel especially the way justice is meaded out generally to the highest bidder . The fact that any person or group thinks they have a right to petition government to prevent others from exercising their rights as free individuals because that person could do something harmful must be meet with a very high bar of judicial prudence . The fact that you can and might do something does not mean you will . To follow the do gooder rule we would not allow people of Muslim faith in the country , drive a car , own a gun , own a knife a baseball bat . After all someone of the Muslim faith hurt and killed with all these things and they did it all with less than 850 demonic horsepower !
