US Violence Abroad Begets Violence at Home

undefined

Although ISIS is claiming that Las Vegas mass murderer Stephen Paddock was one of theirs and was acting on its behalf, so far no independent evidence has surfaced to confirm ISIS’s claim. If such evidence does emerge, it will be one more of a long series of deadly “blowback” occurrences arising from US interventionism abroad.

But even if Paddock’s mass killing spree turns out to have no rational explanation, I continue to contend that these bizarre, unexplainable acts of violence are also rooted in the US government’s decades-long killing spree abroad.

Here is the critical question: If the Pentagon and the CIA are killing masses of people abroad, will that have an adverse effect on people here at home?

The standard answer is no. Ever since the US national-security establishment began killing people in foreign countries, the mindset has been that as long as the death and destruction is “over there,” there would be no adverse impact on American society. As US military and intelligence personnel wreaked death and destruction in faraway lands, Americans would continue to go to work, go on vacation, take their kids to soccer practice, attend sports events where they express thanks to troops, and just continue to live their lives in their regular ways.

The US media has played its part in all this by declining to display photographs of dead bodies and body parts that are the result of US shootings, bombings, or missile attacks. The notion has been that there is simply no good reason why Americans should be exposed to the effects of US violence abroad. One of the best examples of this phenomenon is the many wedding parties that US officials have bombed or stricken with a missile in Afghanistan. The US media has always protected the American people from having to see photographs of the bodies of the bride, the groom, the attendants, the flower girl, the parents, and the guests.

I maintain the opposite. I hold that the massive US violence abroad is triggering violent behavior in people here at home, especially those operating at the margins, mentally speaking. See, for example, my article Charlottesville and America’s Death Machine.

Mind you, I’m no psychiatrist and I have no training in psychology. But I maintain, based simply on common sense and human nature, that all the massive death and destruction that the Pentagon and the CIA wreak abroad inevitably seeps into the minds of the American people. The result is an increasingly intolerant, uncivil, drug-addled, alcoholic society and, even worse, one that triggers irrational violent behavior in people who are mentally operating at the margin.

In my Charlottesville article, I wrote that for the past 25 years, the US government had killed several millions of people in faraway lands. I wrote, “Okay, granted, it’s not 6 million deaths, which has been the standard for numbers killed ever since World War II. Nonetheless, even two or three million of dead, maimed, and exiled people is not a small number.”

It seems, however, that I seriously underestimated the number of people that the Pentagon and the CIA have killed, especially if we go back to 1947, when the US government was converted into a national-security state to oppose its WWII partner and ally the Soviet Union in the Cold War. According to an article entitled “Deaths in Other Nations Since WWII Due to US Interventions” published in 2007 on a website called countercurrents.org, the US government has actually killed some 20 million foreigners. That is definitely not a small number.

There is an important point to note: Not one single one of those 20 million people who were killed by US personnel ever initiated violence against the United States. They were all killed “over there” by the US government, which was initiating violence against them.

“But Jacob, what about the 9/11 attacks? Didn’t the terrorists initiate violence when they did that?”

No. Those attacks were acts of retaliatory, not initiatory, violence. The attackers were retaliating for acts of violence that US officials or their proxies had initiated against people in the Middle East.

Just recently, in the event of war with North Korea, the president of the United States promised to bring “fire and fury” to the entire country, no doubt referring to a US nuclear-bombing campaign against the entire country. There was nary a concern for all the women, children, families, and others within that impoverished Third World country. The lives of those people just don’t matter. They are obviously considered to be nothing but gooks and commies whose lives are no more valuable than those people in Afghanistan who were on their way to get married when they were bombed by US warplanes.

One big problem is that in the addled brain of a person operating mentally at the margins here in the United States, he might well conclude, based on Trump’s reasoning, that no life is valuable, not even American life.

Is it really possible that the US government can kill millions of people without it having and adverse effect on the mental stability of the American people? Is it really possible for Americans to continue living normal lives, mentally speaking, while their government is out killing millions of people on a regular basis? I don’t think so.  The US government’s mass violence abroad is the root cause of the horrible irrational violence that afflicts American society. And as long as the killing over there continues, so will the irrational violence here at home, along with more acts of incivility, intolerance, and other dysfunctional behavior.

Virtual complete agreement. Media used to show the results of us violence … in the 60’s and 70’s. They STARTED to w/ the invasion of Afghanistan/Iraq and were firmly told to STOP that.

Yes thank you all true; on the Moral Front, we should add the “killing” of God by ZOG in 1962 (the unConstitutional ban on public Christian prayers); the Roe vs Wade legal wholesale murders of 60 million USA babies since 1973; SCOTUS legalized homosex marriages in 2015; and now legal “medical” Dope, etc. TPTB keep digging our country’s grave deeper and deeper.

I definitely agree with you. You DO know absolutely nothing about psychology or psychiatry. Ignorance, yes, you have that mastered.

Nice fantasy, guys. Islam is in an expansionist phase because it is a failure “at home”. ISIS, Al Qeda, the Deobandis, the Muslim Brotherhood, etc ad naus. were going to target the US eventually if for no other reason than we are “helping” or “inspiring” some country that they have targeted. “Leave them alone and they will leave us alone” is a fairy tale. Our very existance offends “Allah” and, at a more Earthly level, encourages resistance in their targeted countries. Be “Polite”, but hit hard and hit often (as per SecDef Mattis). The “sane” Muslims who survive may then be “good neighbors” interested in building their own societies instead of destroying others. The “creatures” are on a “mission from god” and it doesn’t matter if you don’t want to play.

Here, Here!, (or is it “Hear, Hear”?, can never keep it straight)
The Received Wisdom that we’re only dealing with “Blowback” from The Peaceful Followers of The Peaceful Prophet, (May the Fleas of a Thousand Camels Infest His Balls and Eat), of The Religion of Peace for perceived injustices committed by the West is COMPLETELY nonsensical. ANYONE with even a smattering of Historical Knowledge regarding the Spread of The Religion of Peace by The Sword at the end of the 7th Century is keenly aware of what Islam truly is. Those who attempt to deny the reality are either Useful Idiots parroting something they once heard, OR are willingly blind and complicit.
The most useful thing that The West could do for their citizenry, right now, would be to educate them about Vienna, Constantinople and The Byzantines, or perhaps a bit about the invasion of India. either that, or perchance we could rent a few Nice French Bombs, and “Poof” Mecca, Medina, Tehran, and a few others, out of existence…….

20,000,000 killed by the US MIC since 1947 = 285,714 per year. Not that I needed it but now I have even more reason to hate my govt.

It’s to long to far to fast and too late . The spread of Islam and its violent nature was encouraged by the actions of our American Government . We have stuck our covert foreign policy dick beaters into every shit hole we can find for oil reserves and defend Israel regardless of the cost to our nation or any other nation . Thomas Jefferson attempted a peace agreement with Islamic factions to leave US merchant ships unmolested . Their envoy Sheik Alli Ben Blowfish said tough shit ! So President Jefferson sent a heavy battle group and fucked them up to the shores of Tripoli . They got the message , fast forward after WW 1 and 2 the spread of modern weapons combined with ancient hatreds and oil money and a world military industrial complex taking control of every thing not nailed down and BOOM !
Ron Paul and a strict non interventionist policy following our CONSTITUTIONAL GUIDE would do wonders for our country along with proper vetting of those wishing to immagrate here . Stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter become a citizen learn the language within 5 years or back to what ever place you left and your litter of kids too . You can’t be bothered to work to be one of us , you don’t get to hang and work against us !
