Trump Calls Elizabeth Warren “Pocahontas” At Event Honoring Navajo Veterans

Tyler Durden's picture

Media outrage is brewing after President Trump on Monday referred to Senator Elizabeth Warren as “Pocahontas” at an event honoring Native American “code talkers” who served in World War II.

“You were here long before any of us were here,” Trump said, standing beneath a portrait of former President Andrew Jackson. “Although we have a representative in Congress who they say was here a long time ago. They call her Pocahontas.” Turning to the veterans, Trump said “but do you know what? I like you.”

The president made the remark in the Oval Office standing beside three Navajos who helped the U.S. Marine Corps develop a secret code during the Second World War. The three “code talkers” reportedly did not react to Trump’s remark.

In the past Trump has repeatedly used the nickname to refer to Warren, poking fun at her claim of Native American heritage.  The president also referred to White House chief of staff John Kelly as “chief.”

“He’s the general and the chief,” Trump said during the event. “I said, how good were these code talkers? He said, ‘sir, you have no idea. You have no idea how great they were’.”

When I was in DC 2006 attending political events, the invited were lined up in a long hallway awaiting entrance. On the walls were images of former presidents and their first ladies. With Andrew there was an image on either side of his portrait. One of the females was the wife he married who had a previous marriage with dubious distinctions; and who died before entering the white house. The other was of a VERY young female. I asked the knowledgeable looking married couple next to me if the young woman was Jackson’s second wife. They said yes, they implied she was his second wife while he was in the White House. She must of barely been 20.

I can’t find it on goog. Just some innuendo about his ‘second wife’.

AJ accepted the surrender of the Spanish and the British here in Pensacola. We got streets named after him. There are locals named Jackson with 1/2 Poarch Creek Indian blood. Very striking females in that family. I think Andy was a prolific man.

I fish often, catch yellowfin tuna, with a man who says he is the last living male relative of his uncle Andy. There is a nice bronze plaque and a statue of him in town.

I thought that was pretty good Iska…gave you an upvote. 5-6 years ago a college prof used ”niggardly” in a lesson, expecting the students would know its meaning, and if not, would take the time to look it up and learn it. Nuh-uh. One took offense. You can guess. Can’t label him a snowflake; doesn’t really fit., so maybe dung beetle would.
He aired his grievances, and when the true meaning of the word was explained to him, he said it didn’t matter. It sounded too close to that other word that some want banished from the history books and English language. . .The college prof was fired for that offense. Imagine that.
Reminds me of a joke told by a kneegrow comedian on stage. Said: “Mike Tyson filed a suit in L.A. last year for malicious defamation of character. Now, I don’t know what you think, but I’d bet the only time Mike Tyson used the word ‘malicious’ was when he was wolfin’ down some really good cookies.”

Here is the deal. Are your ancestors on the Dawes rolls? Yes? You are Native American. No? Shut the fuck up. Are you registered member of a tribe? Yes? You are Indian. No? Shut the fuck up. Do you have a CIB? Yes? Native American. No? Shut the fuck up.

Elizabeth Warren, dumb bitch that she is, is or has none of those things. She claims her family has “stories”. Well, fuck, that is proof, right. And I am next in line to the Britsih Throne based on stories, too.

So, calling that dumb bitch Pocohantas sarcastically is not going to ruffle many Indian feathers. Fuck her and her stories.

I guess that I can understand why Native Americans would consider that to be a racial slur, since Pocahantas saved Captain John Smith’s life according to legend, and became a Tory, although possibly not of her own free will since she was captured, and then presented as someone that the English had “civilized,” since many of the Native Americans were intentionally wiped out by small pox infected blankets.

I would be more offended by Elizabeth Warren claiming to be Native American, when she is not, for the purposes of seeking preferential treatment, if I were Native American.

I have no doubt that the intent would have been there. Not being an epidemiologist or expert in viruses, I’m not sure the “small pox” virus remains contagious after 24 or more hours outside a living host -in an inert object, no less. Probably best to tout only provable atrocities. Now if the white devils had tried a large pox or two, who knows how their evil deed would have turned out.

In this instance, as recorded in his journal by sundries trader and militia Captain William Trent, on June 24, 1763, dignitaries from the Delaware tribe met with Fort Pitt officials, warned them of “great numbers of Indians” coming to attack the fort, and pleaded with them to leave the fort while there was still time. But the commander of the fort refused to abandon the fort. Instead, the British gave as gifts two blankets, one silk handkerchief and one linen from the smallpox hospital,[15] to two Delaware delegates after the parley, a principal warrior named Turtleheart, and Maumaultee, a Chief. The tainted gifts were, according to their inventory accounts, given to the Indian dignitaries “to Convey the Smallpox to the Indians”.[16][17]

INVOICE for 1763 June
Levy, Trent and Company: Account against the Crown, Aug. 13, 1763[15]
“To Sundries got to Replace in kind those which were taken from people in the Hospital to Convey the Smallpox to the Indians Vizt:
2 Blankets @ 20/ £299 099 0
1 Silk Handkerchef 10/

& 1 linnen do: 3/6 099 1399 6
Captain Ecuyer later certified that the items “were had for the uses above mentioned”, in the inventory reimbursement request, and General Thomas Gage would later approve that invoice for payment, endorsing it with a comment and his signature.[15]

How were those small pox infested blankets handled, transported and stored without infecting the Whites that supposedly used them against the Indians?

Smallpox outbreaks at the time would indicate otherwise and there was no widespread vaccination being practiced, there probably would have been many unvaccinated Whites handling those blankets that would have developed smallpox as a result.

I don’t see anyone mentioning this, maybe someone did but I don’t know of any reports about it.

Just something to think about, nothing definitive one way or the other.

“Smallpox vaccine, the first successful vaccine to be developed, was introduced by Edward Jenner in 1796. He followed up his observation that milkmaids who had previously caught cowpox did not later catch smallpox by showing that inoculated cowpox protected against inoculated smallpox.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smallpox_vaccine

So this predates the Siege of Fort Pitt. but immunity is gained from exposure to cows. Doubt if the natives had cows. I have read reports on how the technique was used extensively by the Spanish in South America. Any idea why a certain wild weed is called Spanish Needle?

Poor Pocahontas died in 1617 and was buried in LONDON.

400 years ago just this last March, sadly enough.

Much like that poor soul Joseph Merrick, Pocahontas was a well-liked celebrity — once the LONDON in-crowd became enamored of her. Indeed, she was a smart and special young woman.

Anglicized in the end – in significant way – I might argue.

And dead in the end and buried in London in March 1617, sadly, still a very young woman, who had little or no resistance to English disease.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pocahontas

Brief excerpt from the above Wikipedia link :

“In 1616, the Rolfes traveled to London. Pocahontas was presented to English society as an example of the “civilized savage” in hopes of stimulating investment in the Jamestown settlement. She became something of a celebrity, was elegantly fêted, and attended a masque at Whitehall Palace. In 1617, the Rolfes set sail for Virginia, but Pocahontas died at Gravesend, at 19, of unknown causes. She was buried in St George’s Church, Gravesend in England, but the exact location of her grave is unknown, as the church has been rebuilt.”

A wonderful young woman, whose memory I respect greatly.

What does that even mean …. “overrated”??

WHO is doing the rating? You? Then, why should we believe … you? Whay credentials do you bring to the table? What have you done for TBP?

WHAT is being rated? His opinions/commentary? All of them? Some of them? Isnt he allowed to have opinions — which you obviously dislike — without you calling on the entire TBP community to shun him? Why involve US in YOUR vendetta? Aren’t we intelligent enough to make our own decisions, without direction from you?

Perhaps you don’t like him as a PERSON? You seem to be pissed off about his being an Injun — (he’s OK with ME using that term … and I let him call me a Kraut ?) — and that he brings up his roots, from time to time. Is that wrong, and why?

Perhaps you are JEALOUS? Jealous that he is well regarded here by many, including Admin? Jealous (or, angry) that he had the means to relocate to Australia, and live a very nice lifestyle? If so, what is that to you?

Really … can you give EXAMPLES of his overrated-ness? And do so without starting a shitfest with me … which has occurred on previous occasions? Seriously, I want to know. If I gotta hate the dude, cuz you said so, I need reasons to do so.

Listen … the man has been here from the very beginning. He likely better off than most of us. Having been here from the beginning also, I know it’s the kind of man he is. Doesn’t his generosity count for something?? Or, is that overrated also?

The portrait of Jackson is hung in his office. The ceremony for the code talkers took place there. Hence the simulacrum/recipients in the same space/time continuum.

Trump has admitted repeatedly his admiration for Jackson based on his reputation as someone who stood up to the system and that’s why he chose to place his portrait in the Oval Office. He made the comment about Elizabeth Warren because she set herself up by making a false claim concerning her ethnic heritage in order to bolster her street cred with the identity politics crowd, something she has yet to prove despite the multiple offers to have her DNA checked gratis. Trump doesn’t appear to cater to identitarian politics but rather accomplishments so this was a perfect opportunity for the riposte.

The guys in the Oval Office were Navajo. Jackson relocated Cherokee. The two are not the same thing except in the most general way, sort of like Greeks and Ukranians. You are not likely to upset someone from Kiev by standing in front of a portrait of Attaturk, especially if you are giving them some kind of award or honor completely unrelated to the Greco-Turkish War.

It’s hard to imagine what this world would be like if people actually though about things before they started spouting off about them, but that’s just the Utopian in me.

See, that is why I cannot stand her writing. She talks of two situations that have nothing in common except there’s a president involved. That’s the problem with tiresome ideologues. In the one case, a president is trying to bring two enemies to the peace table. In the second instance, the president himself is at odds with another person. This is a sloppy attempt at humor, which is why you can read it for free rather than pay to hear it in a club. Lame, lame, lame.

Mags? You think you’ve arrived or something? Only friends of Maggie can call her Mags and then only on special occasions. You are a noob here, an unknown quantity. LGR, what is that, what’s wrong with pilsner or stout, you bock beer biased; have you got some sort of ax to grind? Posers like you and Let’s Play need to back up a little, earn some respect, pay your damn dues.

Easy, there Mr. Coyote. Is that enough respect for you? I had an exchange recently with Miss M, and I don’t believe there was any dis contained there, or here. She never indicated explicit rules against nicknames. I don’t have the same frequency of exchanges as you big dog regs,…I get that, & ain’t tryin to horn in on those. Your smackdown of a noob I’m sure will get a blessing from Stuck. Yet, I have sent Admin a decent enough contribution, plus a special inclusion to him that links to your interpretation of my acronym. Research 2 Hearted when you get a chance. Besides, a few previous posts of mine have logged some thumbs up. I ain’t all that bad. Maybe cuz I closed a recent post with my shitty Spanish? Cut me a lil’ slack. Thems lessons from 4 years of it in H.S., some 40 years ago…I’m a Lil’ rusty, hombre. At what point, shall my contrib’s gain status as acceptable? I read Stuck’s 10 rules for Newbs, and have tried to comply. That said, I’ll take the advice you give. More reading and learning, & perhaps less comments. But lurkers-only…they contribute zero.

Indeed, your compliance with TheTen Rules is exemplary.

However, EC was just having some fun with you. He was a wicked sense of humor … and sometimes you have to read between the lines. Trust me, he’s a good hombre.

We’re good, EC. I learn from you two a ton. I’d be more concerned with reactions of indifference, or being ignored than an occasional ball busting from the veterans on TBP I pay attention to. I was warned: Bring your A-game and a thick skin, if you choose to opine. Return the volleys, cuz pushovers get exposed and slink away from getting their ass chapped. Hence, my reply earlier. I’ve seen the wrath rained down upon maroons who fell victim to the panel of judges here. Carry on, big dogs. I’ll keep trying to keep up, & yap every once in a while.

You have a good point. I do NOT like to be called by my given name in this place. I actually am considering having a name conversion and becoming Maggie officially, making it an offense for anyone to call me anything other than Maggie or Mags.

An offense punishable by the Holy Hand Grenade. I have new bunnies, by the way. Seven of the cute little critters.

Am hoping for Christmas bunnies for children. Not Christmas dinner.

I think you mean Bunny PLAYER, don’t you? I’m gearing up for all my friends with grandchildren they adore and daughters-in-law they hates to get one of these adorable little bundles of fur for Christmas delight to all.

And those that are here in January will get pressure canned. It’s the circle of life here in Little Italy, Ozarkia.

I went to Choctawhatchee high school, near Choctawhatchee Bay. We were the Big Green Indians. In high school a good friend’s father was the highest ranking civilian on the ginormous AFB and AT&T scion. He mapped all the indian sites. Mr. Lazarus’ name is on all the maps at UWF archeology department. My friend had his own personal chauffeur, an elvis look alike with a hot rod 58 Chevy and a sexy girlfriend. We had tons of fun tooling around town before we were 16.

Around 1964 Martin L. and I went on an expedition to search for indian sites along Choctawhatchee Bay with a real live indian. We boated and camped looking for oyster shell deposits along the shoreline. I found a ceremonial stone axe head that now is displayed in the Indian Temple Mound Museum in Ft. Walton Beach.

I met a man who claimed to be the last living descendant of Jean Lafitte. His family was the first in the area to have bull dozers. They looted many mound sites and claimed to have found Lafitte’s buried treasure. He gave me a silver articulated turtle ring reputed to belong the famous pirate who would allow the moving head and legs of the ring decide the fate of subjects.

Go unconquered Seminoles! I belong the the Bear Clan and hold a high position.

Where is the media outrage about Warren’s cultural appropriation? Native Americans joke about Whites with aspirations being members of the “Wannabe Tribe”. Maybe her gg-grandma was an Indian Princess.

rainy, you can’t appropriate what is purportedly yours. Now Caitlyn is a special case. He is a male who likes to wear women’s clothes but is otherwise not transgender. Where is the media outrage there?

Glad to see my good friend LLPOH showed up here early and often, and my other good friend Stucky came out swinging in LLPOH’s defense. To those who dissed LLPOH, I cordially invite you to eat my shorts.

On to Trump, for whom I voted and still strongly support. Your propensity to open mouth and insert foot appears to be boundless. The Pocahantas dig couldn’t wait for another venue? In front of a portrait of Jackson? To the credit of the Navajo Nation tribal chief, who was quite aware of the situation, he ignored the controversy and thanked Trump for recognizing the invaluable service of the Navajo code talkers.

One more thing, Donald John. I’m still ticked about your stupid, humiliating and insensitive tweets about Jeff Sessions. He’s the Attorney General, for heaven’s sake. As a young officer in my early 20s, I learned an inviolate leadership and management principle very early – praise in public, criticize in private. No charge for that advice, which I hope at least one of the good generals in your administration brings to your attention.

Thanks SSS! I am so pleased to see you hereabouts more often. Truly. The insights you provide are invaluable to me.

One of Pocohantas’ decendents echoed what I said earlier – Warren falsely claiming to be Native American for personal gain is what is offensive.

I thought Begay’s comments were outstanding. I have a book that covers the bios of many codetalkers. I reread it often. They are worthy of much praise, but have been largely forgotten.,
