Experts Say We’re All Showering Too Much

Guest Post by Stephen Kruiser

Perhaps I should have written the headline as “You’re” showering too much.

I live alone, spending most of my days writing and blogging and I very rarely have to interact with other people. After my daughter went to college and I was back in my writer hermit mode, I began wondering if there was a point to a daily shower. Even at “quick guy shower” length one is wasting precious time that could be spent with Netflix, after all. Absent the need to make other people happy, was there any sound reasoning for wasting water like that?

Not really. In fact, not only is frequent showering not necessary, it can be harmful to the skin:

Anytime you take a shower — especially a hot one — with soap and a scrubbing device like a washcloth or a loofah, you’re undermining the integrity of your skin’s horny layer. The soap and the hot water dissolve the lipids in the skin and scrubbing only hastens the process. The more showers you take, the more frequently this damage takes place and the less time your skin has to repair itself through natural oil production. What’s more, the horny layer of your skin can be sloughed off by scrubbing, exposing the delicate skin cells beneath. The result of showering too frequently is generally dry, irritated and cracked skin.

For the longest time, a key component of my personal mission statement has centered on maintaining the integrity of my skin’s horny layer. I can’t be alone in that regard. Imagine my horror upon discovering that societal daily hygiene norms were keeping me from my life goals.

As if it weren’t awful enough that the shower is assaulting my skin, there is a terrycloth demon awaiting afterward to do even more damage:

Another problem related to showering too often is the use of a towel to dry off. While rubbing yourself dry with a towel is common practice, it’s also a damaging one for your skin.

Is there no end to the havoc that the pressure to smell good for strangers can wreak on one’s epidermis?

Even with damning evidence like the above, questions still lingered in my mind about whether I should break from modern tradition.

As always, the Internet came through for me:

Even more validation awaited:

Too much all-over bathing may even raise your risk for some health issues. Dry, cracked skin opens up gaps for infection-causing germs to slip through. That means frequent bathing when your skin is already dry—and especially as you age, when your skin becomes thinner and less hydrated—may increase the odds of coming down with something, Larson says.

Other experts agree. “I think most people over-bathe,” says Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell, assistant professor of dermatology at George Washington University.

Finding that my choice has the support of experts I’ve never met has been liberating. The discovery has me rethinking my hygiene habits when I’m on the road.

Throughout my career I have showered before every show. Other than the time it takes for a brief handshake and to offer a few words of effusive praise to me when the show is over, the audience is never too close to me. A little extra cologne should be all that’s needed for non-shower night shows.

Not only will I reap the emotional benefits of living my best life, but my horny layer will thank me for years to come.

When your gut bacteria are right, you quit emitting stinky odors of all kinds. Consume fermented foods and shower once a week at most, I say!

This reminds me of a story I once heard that Napoleon use to send word to Josephine 3 weeks ahead of his arrival to not take a bath. Apparently the scent of rotting fish is a yeast sauce turned him on.

A good pussy cleans itself. Very complicated combination of bacteria in there. You will know if it is right by the taste.

Swim in the river twice a week, shower twice a week.
Dance every night, fuck every morning.
Eat well, work hard, make callouses, wear rubber boots.
Carry a .45 every where you go.
Fuck yeah. I love my life.

Just tie your showering to sex, a couple times per day.

And they want us to start eating insects.

Why don’t they do something to reduce population growth.

Best comment.

Yep. This shit is propaganda intended to con the populace into willingly pursuing a third world standard of living – with the ultimate intention of there being no other option.

If you’ve never seen the film Soylent Green, it’s worth watching.

Spaying and neutering of certain element of the population could be a goo thing . Voluntary of course, maybe with a small payment for their trouble. It would be economically beneficial.

Sheesh, I’m sorry I read the comments.

That said, now that I am here, I will say that if you have trouble sleeping, a hot bath or shower, but preferably a hot bath helps you sleep because when your body is cooling off from the heat, sleepiness sets in. I sleep better when I take a hot bath. Your skin doesn’t suffer if you take care of it and neither does anything else if you know what I mean.

The author of the article is just trying to justify being lazy.

Almost all ‘soaps’ today are really detergents. I had problems with cracked and split fingers in the winter. I completely solved the problem by switching to liquid castile soap. I also don’t allow ANY dishwashing liquid to contact my skin. I also only use my hands, so there is minimal abrasion.

Bottom line (at least IMHO) is that it’s not the water from the shower that does the harm – it’s the chemicals.

I have kind of oily skin which is good now that I’m an old boomer fuck because at 61, I have no facial wrinkles…no crows feet around the eyes. I feel funky if I don’t shower once a day.

Yeah, I get it.
Skip a shower for a day or two, and if you have a head of hair,
give that a break from the soaps and shampoos from time to time, too.
-Natural oils and all that stuff.
-And maybe anti-perspirants are not good for the glands in your pits.

But avoid soap and hot water for more than 2 days, and humans start to stink.
Those oils and that smell get leeched onto the micro fiber couch, bedsheets, pillows, etc.
So then you start to leave a trail that would repel a bloodhound.

If your family doesn’t object, or if one lives alone and doesn’t interact with anybody, then fine.

But personally, when my snot locker catches a whiff of my own funk, I know it’s time.

After 4 days of camping in the woods without a hot shower, shave, & shampoo,
I’m heading back to a routine clean up ASAP, knowing how great it will feel.
The hot water soothes sore muscles, and washing off the oils makes for a clean feeling.

I remember getting on a jet one time for a four hour flight.
There were 20 French exchange students on board.
Their collective body odor was nauseating.

I ran into that with business contacts on a trip to France many years ago, too.

Likewise, with an Indian woman where I work. WTF?
D-E-O-D-E-R-A-N-T, you smelly sons of bitches.
Personal choice and culture my ass.
Have some consideration for the people that have to be near you or interact with you.

It’s like grunge fuckers who wear dreadlocks. Look like shit and smell worse. Lazy.

Don’t get me going on halitosis, either. Floss and brush MFer’s. Daily.
Talk about some funk that would wilt a floral arrangement. Gross.

Nasty VJJ’s and Schwetty Balls are funky, too.

Fresh and clean wins, hands down.
If your skin is dry from daily showers, get your spouse to scratch your back.
I’m guessing they’ll trade you that courtesy for cleaning off & avoiding the olfactory assault.

I leave you with Lynard Skynard.

I work from home. I shower as needed. I showered Sunday after spending my day outside digging holes trying to locate and repair a water leak in my yard. I’ll shower in the morning. I save water and make less dirty clothes to wash. When I travel for work I shower daily.

One thing I’ve never understood about the USA is why bidets aren’t installed in bathrooms. They’re a very useful hygiene device.

Great idea, Monty. Plus, on weekends, you can gargle after you throw up.
