My MIL said that when she was a young woman in the 50’s, a girl expected to hear 5 or 10 compliments on her appearance. If she got less, she quickly ran home to see what was the matter with her appearance that day. In the US, the phenomenon is stereotypical of hardhat construction guys. Most common piropos sounded like: Mamacita, you’re just what the doctor prescribed for me. My MIL said her mother in law came home scandalized because she had a habit of not shaving her legs and some oaf had commented as she passed by: if the surrounding areas are so profuse, I wonder what the forest looks like?
My lady friend (peruana pituca mestiza, now 57) is, shall we say, well endowed like the mom in the photo and is no stranger to piropos, but her teenaged dtr was enraged on more than once occasion when a guy (usually a cholo about five minutes away from being run out of Miraflores by the serenazgo) proferred one. Mom and I had a good laugh, but mom was far from offended, nor was I.
We’ll leave the woods for another time, but a trip into them sure can be fun!

I’ve lived in Colombia and other Latino countries and remember well a trip in La Guajira with a later (’93) “Miss Guajira” and family in ’90 when this one hit the charts.
