NXIVM mastermind Keith Raniere was found guilty on all seven charges relating to his role as leader of NXIVM and DOS – the off-shoot sex cult where Raniere sat at the top of the pyramid of his sex slaves.
During closing arguments, Raniere’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, denied that DOS was a cult or Raniere was a cult leader.
Regarding claims that Raniere branded DOS slaves with his initials, forced them to send close-up pictures of their genitals as blackmail, and coerced them into having sex with him, Agnifilo specified: “The conduct, looked at objectively, is pretty out there. But that doesn’t make it a crime.”
Of Raniere’s “out there” behavior and actions with NXIVM, Agnifilo said, “This is just his lifestyle”. Agnifilo suggested DOS was intended to help and support women instead of manipulate and abuse them.
Agnifilo stressed that Raniere’s “disgusting” behavior wasn’t illegal and that just because something seemed strange didn’t make it lawless.
However, Raniere’s illicit and shady misdoings saw him tying up a NXIVM slave and humiliating her during a sexual assault.
Meeting up for simple midnight walks with Raniere, a woman who was only identified by her first name, Nicole, says that it took a sudden turn when Raniere took her to an empty house and was ordered to get undressed while he commented on her body.
From there, Nicole was told to get dressed and put on two blindfolds with Raniere leading her to a car, and driving her to an unknown location 10 minutes away.
“He took me through the woods because I remember branches breaking under my feet,” Nicole said, saying she “imagined [the location] was a small cabin but I don’t know.”
Inside the cabin, Raniere told her to undress and get on the table before tying her hands and feet with cloth. On the table, Nicole said she began to feel somebody perform oral sex on her as Raniere walked around the table and asked her sexually-implicit questions.
After, Raniere helped Nicole get dressed and led her back to the car to go back to the original house they had come from. Once the blindfolds were off, Raniere told her “nothing bad had just happened”.
Who had lured Nicole into NXIVM? None other than Allison Mack.
Allegedly, Allison Mack also starved “Dynasty” star Catherine Oxenberg’s daughter, India. According to Nicole, Mack kept India on a 500-calorie-a-day diet and even threatened to starve her further because Nicole was close friends with Oxenberg’s daughter.
Raniere, who will serve life in prison for his charges, operated a manipulative, depraved sex cult since 1998, lurking in the shadows and recruiting unwitting women for his pyramid scheme. The five other co-defendants in the case have pleaded guilty.
Unsurprisingly, it seems that, a jury did not agree with the notion that Raniere’s “odd” behavior was merely innocent and harmless, instead seeing the toxic and horrid details for what they were – a psychopath attempting to bend and manipulate vulnerable people at the fringes of society, attempting to skirt the law indefinitely.
All I got out of this story is how weak and easily manipulated women are when A) other women set the tone and B) there is some form of power residing with the man. They cannot maintain their vaunted strength and solidarity even when they have the complete power to simply say “Fuck you” and walk away. They keep coming back.
Who, of their own free will, would allow someone to take a red hot iron to their pubic area?
Women proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that no matter how well raised- these women were from well to do stable families in good communities, not runaways- they have no agency over their own behavior, never mind bigger issues. Women are followers, they are easily talked into doing things that they know are wrong because of peer pressure and the enticement of getting close to power. It’s always been that way and will likely always be that way. Good men, rather than taking advantage of this truth, act as protectors of the women in their orbit; wives, daughters, sisters, mothers and look out for their best interests knowing that they haven’t got the tools to do it for themselves absent that guidance.
This was one of the most counter-narrative stories of the past year.
In India, the women are the enforcers of Sati, burning the wife when the husband dies. In some Middle Eastern harems, the first wife would be spied upon and lied about to her husband to remove her from the number-one spot. Women are cats.
And there is nothing wrong with a woman relying on a strong man.
Sad but true. Women also maintain the FGM routines.

I agree with your point about adult women and consent. Question is, how many of his ‘sex slaves’ were children who grew up in that environment and participated as adults because that’s all they knew? Is that also consensual?
Keith Raniere was also involved with child trafficking and child porn. Ran child daycare centres that were a front for it and involved experiments on children. Gives a different slant to it IMO.

To your point HSF, two sisters from one of Canada’s most powerful families, the Bronfmans, (heirs to the Seagrams fortune and huge financial backers of the Liberal party of Canada) were bankrolling NXVIM and paid for Raniere’s legal team. NXVIM was a club for stupid women allowing themselves to be subjected to evil things, funded by stupid women with money.
None of what happened could have taken place without the scheming, complicity and intentional acts of the sisterhood of women. This was a women’s cult. Look at the websites, look at all their press releases and special groups and programs- every bit of it was built around their interests and motivations. Raniere was just an opportunist with an extra shot of Svengali bullshit he was willing to run because he was part of the progressive moral relativity crowd. He grew up in a single parent household, was an Amway distributor and ran several multi-level marketing strategy type companies.

What I still don’t understand is why any of this is illegal? What people allow others to do to them voluntarily may be degenerate, but how is it a crime? A doctor will cut off a man’s penis and testicles because the patient asks for it and face zero legal repercussions, how is this any different?

According to the narrative at the link, on a date one night “[Nicole] told… Keith that I would do anything he wanted me to do.” Keith “did not feel the statement was ‘genuine'” and so ignored Nicole’s advance. On another date the next night, “Nicole … tried again,” telling Keith she would do anything he wanted. The second time, Keith believed Nicole’s statement. Fornication ensued. At the end of the night, Keith “helped [Nicole] dress, led her back to the car,” and took her “back to the original house” where the date began.
Sounds like the sex cult was consensual. WTF?!?
