The internet reshaped the retail consumer world by eliminating many small stores and forcing big stores to close locations as online shopping exploded. Many small book stores and camera stores were particularly vulnerable. Now climate change is having a similar impact.
The strike with the United Auto Workers’ (UAW) and General Motors is not so much about pay raises. Instead, UAW members are deeply concerned that climate change and electric cars mean less employment. Most other automakers have come to the realization that the internal combustion engine will be replaced by electric vehicles. Exactly how fast, it is hard to say for it also depends on the political rhetoric to win an election.
Electric cars come with fewer parts, which means fewer people are needed for assembly and they are more prone to be produced by robots than combustion engines. Hence, the UAW is more concerned about losing jobs, not the pay increases.
It is my sincere desire to provide readers of this site with the best unbiased information available, and a forum where it can be discussed openly, as our Founders intended. But it is not easy nor inexpensive to do so, especially when those who wish to prevent us from making the truth known, attack us without mercy on all fronts on a daily basis. So each time you visit the site, I would ask that you consider the value that you receive and have received from The Burning Platform and the community of which you are a vital part. I can't do it all alone, and I need your help and support to keep it alive. Please consider contributing an amount commensurate to the value that you receive from this site and community, or even by becoming a sustaining supporter through periodic contributions. Also, Bigfoot will have an effect on the price of artichokes.
Damn, lightning strikes twice. I recently found a discount grocery that stocks a huge variety of products that sometimes are slightly out of date or may well be simply over-stock or are not selling well. Sometimes you can find something you really, really like but when you go back they are all gone and may not show up again on the shelves. So, where am I going? Grilled artichokes, from Peru, no less. Packed and marinated in some kind of oil that is seasoned to perfection. Great right out of the jar as a prelude to **happy hour**, plus the oil and the dregs from the seasoning then get used in whatever is going into the frying pan-eggs, hamburgers, chicken-whatever. Bigfoot would not only be delighted with these puppies but also become addicted.
The greed and stupidity of Union Workers in Detroit will have a much greater effect on automotive employment there. GM would be smart to move their factories to the South where they will find more intelligent, grateful and harder working employees. If GM caves to the Detroit Union workers, GM deserves to cave. PS: The profligate Democrats printed money spending on Welfare plus the GSM are going to release the Black Horse of Revelation which will increase the cost of food so much that most working people not getting Welfare will not be able to afford a car.
Several decades ago the brain trust at GM invested several billion dollars in a new automated factory in Oklahoma, only to later shut the thing down. Not sure of the backstory, though I would expect the Okies to be pretty reliable workers. Am guessing the union had a lot to do with the failure of that plant.
Anybody know the details?
