New ATF Study: 423 Million Guns In Hands Of Americans

Authored by Steve Watson via Summit News,

Violent crime rate has decreased by 48.6 percent in tandem with ownership rise…

Newly released figures from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives shows that there are now a whopping 422.9 million guns in the hands of Americans. The number equates to 1.2 guns for every person in the country.

The figures also show that in 2018, 8.1 billion rounds of ammunition were produced by the gun industry.

The figures also reveal that the most popular firearm in the country is the much maligned sporting rifle, often mis-identified as an “assault rifle”, the AR-15 being one of the more popular models.

The findings highlight that there are now 17.7 million of them in private hands, a record high, and more than half (54%) of all rifles produced in 2017 were modern sporting rifles.

The ATF figures also reveal that firearms-ammunition manufacturing accounted for nearly 12,000 jobs in the US, creating over $4.1 billion in goods shipped in 2017.

“These figures show the industry that America has a strong desire to continue to purchase firearms for lawful purposes,” said Joe Bartozzi, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

“The modern sporting rifle continues to be the most popular centerfire rifle sold in America today and is clearly a commonly owned firearm with more than 17 million in legal private ownership today.” Bartozzi continued.

“The continued popularity of handguns demonstrates a strong interest by Americans to protect themselves and their homes and to participate in the recreational shooting sports,” Bartozzi added.

Bartozzi also noted that “as lawful firearms ownership in America continues to grow, criminal and unintentional misuse of firearms is falling.”

“During the 25-year period covered in this report (1993–2017) the violent crime rate has decreased by 48.6 percent and unintentional firearm-related fatalities have declined by 68 percent.” he added.

One reason why the popularity of the sporting rifle continues to grow may be because it is routinely criticized and targeted in arguments for stricter gun control.

Justin Anderson of Hyatt Guns, one of the biggest firearm retailers in the country noted that “Sales have definitely been brisk, especially of small, concealable handguns. We also saw a spike in sales of tactical rifles like AR-15s and AK-47s, for which I think we can confidently thank Beto O’Rourke.”

During a failed presidential run, Beto said on multiple occasions that he would ban AR-15s, and even go door to door to confiscate the weapons from Americans.

With a near record high of gun sales on Black Friday last week, Americans are sending a clear message in exercising their Second Amendment rights.

Somehow methinks their numbers are low. They always get low ball numbers when estimating social programs costs only to have them balloon in cost later. 1.2 per person? My house is more than triple that number.

You got to remember half the country thinks guns are icky and dangerous and would never be in the same room as a gun…..lest the firearm magically jump up and shoot them. So take out the commies and we are 2.4 for real Americans which still sounds low!

nah. most of them have a firearm or two, they just don’t want the opposition to have them. they think that 1) only the government should have guns, and 2) only they should be the government.

You should be alright in TN (if you are in TN). VA is the one I am watching currently a powder keg of rural gun lovers and the Dem asshats in the DC suburbs and Richmond and let’s not forget Charlottesville. With the Dems in 100% control of state government, anything is possible….and Ol’Virginny won’t stand for it…..

TN Constitution affirms the right to keep and bear and we have been able to keep pro 2-A state government, for now. We are about 40 mi from Memphrica and yes, I expect our little community to be OK. Many of the neighbors have a range in the back yard and the woods are also a great place to practice.

Progressive creep is happening in a lot of solid conservative places. The District of Corruption has infected VA; the tech industry infecting Raleigh-Durham/Charlotte, NC and Austin, TX; illegal aliens are flooding FL, TX & AZ; libs from CA fleeing to CO, AZ and TX are turning them purple/blue.

The future does not look good for Conservatives and those who just want government out of their lives. As you are fond of saying, the 4th Turning is at hand.

We should have split VA up before the encroachment by the Yank carpetbaggers into Stafford and Frednecksburg. Too late now, but believe me SoVA hates NoVA with a passion. It was bad enough when most of the transportation funds were tabbed for shitty mixing bowls.

Build a wall around Arlington and lock anyone and everyone from MD, PA, and NY in its confines, and siege it. Problem solved.

My great-grandfather was a sportsman and owned many firearms. there were 10’s of thousands like him and I suspect these are not included in the numbers. Also many, many weapons were brought back from WW I & II and are not included in the count. I would be surprised if the total was under 1/2 BILLION firearms in private hands.

With that many firearms, everyone would know it, if we had a “gun violence” problem.

With their record-keeping, they likely have no idea where they all are. And knowing them, they probably purchased mass quantities of one caliber, only to then switch calibers of their weapons the next year.

We don’t have a gun problem. We have a “teen” and meztizo problem. Take away black and Julio crime and the USofA has one of the lowest crime rates on the Big Blue Marble. I suspect that the 17.7 million reflects complete rifles only. My go to provider for many of my parts is Palmetto State Armory. PSA sells uppers, lowers, complete assemblies &TC. Everything you need to build yer own. From basic, good quality items to absolutely top quality parts and assemblies. Many items are routinely out of stock. Americans are building their own sporting rifles and many are completely under the radar of the gun grabbers. 80% lowers have no SNs and are untraceable. I agree with Brian, the numbers are too low. Beatoff O’Rork gave us a wakeup call: the curtain was pulled back and the mask was off. Confiscation was finally identified as their goal, no questions asked. VA is the coming battleground for confiscation. The communist controlled state govt has vowed to outlaw and confiscate almost all firearms. Should be a very interesting beginning to ’20. Prepare accordingly, it’s much later than we think!

It took me a long time to come to the realization that the DEMS are not opposed to crime, remember MS13 “has the spark of humanity” from Nancy Pelosi etc….nope the Dems simply want a monopoly on violence and cannot tolerate citizens having the ability to oppose their will. As brutal and simple as that.

The Dems will kill us if given the chance.

If a Dem wins in 2020 expect mass Demicide/Genocide and if they lose the civil war is on like Donkey Kong.

Yes, if you took the statistics of 3 dozen zip codes out of the totals, we would be a very safe country. Amazingly enough, these 3 dozen zips are all solidly democrat run poverty plantations and have been for 1/2 a century.

Have we gotten our money’s worth out of the $20 TRILLION spent on the “War on Poverty”?

a long time. those who will deny access don’t live where you can reach them. you don’t even know who they are. they’ll just do it, and “the system” will follow the rules, and that will be the end of it. the atm will just blink at you, the bank teller will just say, “I’m sorry but my computer says your account is locked and won’t allow a withdrawal and my drawer won’t open”, the store cashier will just say, “I’m sorry but my computer doesn’t recognize your card and my drawer won’t open,” and your mortgage company will just say, “your bank account is locked and your check won’t clear so we’ll have to repossess” and the sheriff will show up at your door in 90 days. you can blow up the atm’s and threaten the cashiers and have gunfights with swat teams all you want, but that won’t get you a single dollar or a single loaf of bread and the ones who own the system won’t care.

We know who and where they are, and they hardly beyond reach.

Their minions won’t act as your fantasy suggests, because of what would presumably be severe personal consequences for them.

This is precisely what happened during the collapse of the Roman Empire. The outer provinces told Rome whatever it wanted to hear, while acting according to their local reality. Then it was the provinces closer to Rome, and finally Rome fell.

The Patrician class disappeared completely, utterly exterminated.

They believed they were untouchable. They were wrong.

Almost as fast as cnn has spread news the govt wanted to make sure everyone knew when they made examples of richard jewel, randy weaver, julian Assange and hundreds others. Time for word spreading at a different level will not be spread by cnn. They will keep it quite so not to inform the masses they are really in charge. Like an elephant and trainer….

” The outer provinces told Rome whatever it wanted to hear, while acting according to their local reality”

in modern times there is only one province, and only one financial system that is almost ready to distinguish between individuals. observe china’s social credit system, already in place. that is coming here.

I wonder where they got their data from? There is no way in hell there are only 400 million guns in the USA. They have no way of knowing for sure. Many years ago, I remember the estimate being 5 guns for every man, woman, child, cat, and dog in the US. Assume they can account for everything the manufacturers produce. There’s the imported surplus market to account for. There’s the imported black market market to account for. There’s the stolen US Govt arms to account for. The number of illegally manufactured arms? Who knows how many ghost guns are out there? And now, there’s 3D printed guns to contend with. Considering how easy it is to build them, and how many parts kits sans-receivers have been sold, there is no way to be certain. When you consider outfits like Sarco and Apex and others have been selling torch-cut parts kits for everything from Uzis to MG42s to 120mm mortars for decades, there’s no way of knowing what crazy toys are waiting out there for spicy time.

Question- Have you ever been approached by someone selling or offering to help you find an illegal weapon?
I know I have.

An armed populous is the reason our country could never be over run and held by a invading military force. That was the reasoning behind the second amendment. It has only become a problem since the Government stopped representing the interests and will of the people, and began to worry they may one day be recognized for the criminals and traitors they are…..
