It’s about time they panicked. We thought they’d never cooperate.

They do live on an island. Almost everything is shipped or flown in so perhaps the Hawaiians have cause for concern over supply disruption. As to the mainland folk, he who panics early panics best.

Donkey,
Most people are. Who to believe? What to believe? I think it’s best to err on the side of prepping if only because, should this be be the real deal, your ass will be somewhat covered. Better to be the ant than the grasshopper….savvy?

Our county fucks up the water system so often (decades of neglect resulting in massive water main breaks, etc.) that there are often massive runs on water. Let one flake of snow fall in the Atlanta area, and every store shelf is empty of bread, milk, and ice.

I guess when you live paycheck to paycheck, you tend to adopt a “Just in Time” food and essentials-planning philosophy.

Those of us who slaved in the bowels of American Industry and were whipped with the “Just in Time” line of bull shit had a more pragmatic, down to earth phrase for what it really was all about with many of our Asian suppliers:

“Just in Case”.

Translation-in the event a factory line went down over there and JIT shipments were threatened there was often a warehouse just outside the fence owned by some other member in their business cartel and that warehouse happened to have some FGI that could be dispatched “just in time” to catch the Nippon Airways freighter with a few minutes to spare.

The problem with American business thinking is that they look upon the great success of Japan and try to simply mimic their business principles (JIT being one of them). What they failed to understand (or what was lost in translation) was that Poke-Yoke, JIT, Kanban, and all the rest were merely TOOLS for identifying the weak links in your process so that you could FIX THEM. American manufacturers somehow got the idea that these things were the be-all/end-all of success. When these things blatantly identified the weak links, they did what they have always done and papered them over, got rid of the Kanbans, stopped letting assembly workers shut down the production line when they found a defect, etc. or created a wholly counterproductive “work-around” so they didn’t have to identify the root cause or actually fix the problem. Pretty much how the government works too.

A huge difference on the macro level: the Asians have business cartels (kiertusis in Japan/chaebols in Korea-(too lazy to get the correct spellings here)) where a grouping of industrial companies form extremely tight relationships-with government sanction and tax incentives freely available-often their factories are built next to each other. We Americans, otoh, compete against other and are often restrained and put at disadvantage by governments. They collude while we stagnate.

Our SPC guy used to tell the story of how Edward Deming tried to get buy-in from America, Incorporated for his ideas about how to better control processes but failed. He found willing customers with the Japs, particularly since they were rebuilding after losing the war and the timing was right.

But you are right. Nothing funner than seeing managers who are ruthless about JIT getting baled out by a clandestine JIC.

Just got back from Costco on eastside of Seattle. Jam packed. Checkout lines from the front to the back of the store.

Paper towels, toilet paper, all kinds of rice, and a lot of canned goods completely gone. Meat case was half empty with the staff constantly restocking. Won’t be long until that’s all gone too. There were still eggs and milk.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. When people really panic, it’s going to be bad.

I pick up at the supermarket every day and to get to the produce department I walk behind the entire storage area. I took a good long look this week at the labels on all of the boxes and I have some very sobering news. I’d say that at least 80% of every non perishable stock they have comes out of China, Malaysia, etc. paper products, plastics, detergents, cleaning supplies, storage supplies, personal care products.

Better to order online than stand in line like that.
But they’re doing what the government always tells you to do in an emergency, spend, spend, spend. Have to keep the buying going to keep the economy going.

Well I hit the panic button today, not really but I certainly was not pleased. I purchased 800lbs of hen scratch and egg pellets combined and it was $173.00 Everything has value and 800lbs of chicken feed is not worth $173.00 Especially considering my 1953 chevy truck was $1,200. brand new. A man told me today his 2019 chevy was $60,000. Reckon I don’t fit here anymore.

Oldtimer: I spend a great deal of time reeling from sticker shock. I have a dog that needs doxycyline….seems a 90 day supply is $100.00 from the vet. I called a local pharmacy and they wanted $479. for the same drug. I suggest you stock pile some meds, especially since most of the raw material for said meds comes from China.

I was getting doxy from Cal Vet by mail fairly cheap. It was for bird feather brightness but was the same stuff. Some states require a script.

Thanks Mygirl, I agree on the meds, been attempting to for years. I am just about as self sufficient as one can be but I do have a rather heart wrenching situation. I have an adult son who still lives with us and always will, he was born with a rare disease and requires an intensive amount of respiratory care, he also has a tracheostomy. Need I say more concerning that situation? Doctors said he would not live past 3 years old but they didn’t understand the wife that I have, she is awesome.

I have known for years that something like this catastrophe staring at us in the face was inevitable, has not most of us? I have done all I know to do, now I must leave it in God’s hands. I pray for strength to accept what I cannot control, which is very hard for me.

Old Timer: Bless both you and your wife and your son.

We all do what we can with what we have, I have pondered on this situation that’s confronting us and agree that what we see has been a long time in coming. I also reflect on situations past and those were worse than what we confront today. The Great Depression, world wars, pestilence and plagues and droughts and an endless list of crises and catastrophes.
All we can do is prepare, take it one day at a time, put our trust in God and let go of trying to control everything.
Prayer for Serenity
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
taking, as Jesus did,
this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You forever in the next.

My wife, the clueless mulatta asked if that’s all people are concerned about, taking a dump. I say, not me. The charmin is for you, to keep your booty youthful looking, I can get by with newspaper like in the old days.

In the old days said newspapers ended up in the bottom of the outhouse. Not recommended that one flushes newspaper. In the overall scheme of things one could just cut up old rags and use those to wipe one’s bum. Once upon a time in the era of cloth diapers, baby butts were cleaned with rags and those rags were washed and re-used.

I often wondered how babies on a liquid diet could have some of the nastiest shits known to man?
