Aloha State Will be Years in Recovering from COVID-19 Lockdown

Guest Post by Joe Guzzardi

Hawaii

The coronavirus pandemic, and the Hawaiian government’s response to it, has devastated the state. If Hawaii is lucky, three years from now the state will recover and once again be a favorite tourist destination. For today, however, Governor David Ige has asked tourists to stay away from the islands for a minimum 30-day period.

For those daring enough to come ahead as well as those Hawaiians returning home, Ige has imposed a mandatory 14-day stay-at-home order. Moreover, Ige banned nonessential foot and vehicle traffic after 4:30 p.m. Violators who commit a misdemeanor offense may be punished by fines of up to $5,000 and a year in jail. Last week, Honolulu police issued 70 citations and arrested two.

Nancy Pelosi Is Spending Shutdown at Hawaii Resort

Via The Washington Free Beacon

Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi is spending the government shutdown at a luxury resort in Hawaii, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

Pelosi, who has put blame squarely on President Donald Trump for the current government shutdown, was spotted Thursday vacationing in Hawaii at the Fairmont Orchid resort, where room accommodations range from $899-a-night for a standard room to $4,899-a-night for the presidential suite.

The resort, on Hawaii’s Big Island, features a golf course, six restaurants, and a 10,000-square-foot oceanfront pool. It also features a “Spa Without Walls,” where the 110-minute Ali’i Royal Experience is available for $369 and a 50-minute couples massage runs $549, according to the spa menu. While at the spa, guests can snack on a gluten-free grilled prawn summer roll for $19.

Trump canceled his Christmas trip to Florida and remained in the White House, saying on Christmas Eve that he was “waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal.” The president left the White House on Christmas to travel to Iraq and meet with American troops stationed overseas.

Trump has been holding work meetings since Congress went into recess, including one with Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on how to fund the administration’s border security plan.

Pelosi, meanwhile, has been speaking to the press. She gave an exclusive interview to USA Today just before Christmas calling Trump a “fear monger.”

“He talked about terrorists coming in over that particular border, which wasn’t so,” Pelosi said. “He’s using scare tactics that are not evidence-based, and it’s wrong.”

Trump has said he will not sign a funding bill that doesn’t include funding for construction of his border wall. Pelosi is set to take over as speaker of the House in the new year, setting off an immediate standoff with the White House on legislation to reopen currently unfunded federal agencies.

This is not Pelosi’s first holiday vacation to Hawaii. In 2011, it was reported by the Hawaii Reporter that Pelosi had in previous years stayed in a $10,000-a-night suite at the Four Seasons Resort in Kona for her holiday vacation.

Hawaii volcano lava flows into power plant, sparking fears of deadly gas release

Via MSN

Slide 1 of 176: Steam plumes rise as lava enters the Pacific Ocean, after flowing to the water from a Kilauea volcano fissure, on Hawaii's Big Island on May 21, 2018 near Pahoa, Hawaii. Officials are concerned that 'laze', a dangerous product produced when hot lava hits cool ocean water, will affect residents. Laze, a word combination of lava and haze, contains hydrochloric acid steam along with volcanic glass particles.

Emergency workers in Hawaii are racing to protect a geothermal power plant near the Kilauea Volcano. Slow-moving molten rock entered the site and is just a few hundred yards from the wells. There is concern lava could trigger the release of deadly hydrogen sulfate gas, reports CBS News’ Mark Strassmann.

Lava continued its steady advance toward the Puna Geothermal Venture Plant before stalling late Monday. The facility is shut down, but the wells there still present a risk if overrun with the molten rock.

“It’s not easy to predict where it’s going to go, and when it’s going to get there,” said Tom Travis, of Hawaii Emergency Management.

Major Earthquake Rattles Hawaii, Triggering More Volcanic Eruptions

A day after Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted, sending magma bubbling up through cracks in the earth and forcing hundreds of people to flee, the US Geological Survey on Friday recorded a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that was centered in nearly the exact same location as a deadly 1975 quake that caused the deaths of two people, according to Agence France-Presse.

The quake triggered more eruptions by opening up five magma vents in the area, CNN reported. A separate, smaller 5.4 magnitude quake was recorded earlier in the day, as well as a swarm of smaller aftershocks. USGS said it fears the quakes could trigger more eruptions.

For the Love of the Game: Hawaiian Man Spends Potentially Last Moments on Earth Golfing

Via Townhall

“Golf is a good walk spoiled,” American author Mark Twain is credited as saying. Golf, a game as beautiful as it is frustrating, is played daily by thousands of men and women. Time and time again, a good golf round is ruined by slow play, a call from a spouse demanding their loved one home, or inclement weather. But for one Hawaiian man, absolutely nothing could get in the way of finishing his round, not even a potential ballistic missile strike.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY – Alaskan earthquake triggers massive tsunami – 1946

Via History.com

On this day in 1946, an undersea earthquake off the Alaskan coast triggers a massive tsunami that kills 159 people in Hawaii.

In the middle of the night, 13,000 feet beneath the ocean surface, a 7.4-magnitude tremor was recorded in the North Pacific. (The nearest land was Unimak Island, part of the Aleutian chain.) The quake triggered devastating tidal waves throughout the Pacific, particularly in Hawaii.

WHY IS MSM COVERING UP SANDERS’ LANDSLIDE VICTORIES?

Has there ever been more proof the liberal MSM is completely in the bag for Hillary Clinton? Sanders absolutely crushed Queen Hillary in Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. They weren’t just victories. They were landslides. Bernie got 76% of the vote in Washington, 79% of the vote in Alaska, and 70% of the vote in Hawaii. And still the liberal MSM blathers about how popular Clinton is. They concentrate on how she will crush Trump. If she is getting her fat ass handed to her by a decrepit old socialist in her own primaries, why does anyone think she would win a landslide victory in November. Democrats don’t like her and Republicans despise her. She bought off the 400 super delegates in the utterly corrupt Democratic method of selecting a candidate. The voters have not selected Cankles Clinton.

Hawaii May Be Screwed When TSHTF

I think this is an interesting article because, well …. I never think about what condition Hawaii will be in when the shit hits the fan. Do you?  Paradise might have some serious problems.

Hawaii’s government launched the Aloha+ Challenge … ““to at least double local food production” to where 30% of food consumed in Hawaii is grown locally by 2030. Reading between the lines, that means Hawaii cannot become food independent.

Why? There simply is not enough land to support the current, and growing, population. From government tables …. the total land in Hawaii is 4.1 million acres of which 1.9 million of those acres being used for agriculture. The rest is urban, conservation, or rural land. In other words, just about half of all the available land in Hawaii is being used for agriculture yet, over 90% of Hawaii’s food is imported.

In the book “Value of Hawaii”, Charles Reppen (a taro farmer) writes about the problems related to sustainable agriculture in Hawaii and how urbanization is increasing and it being a major problem. With more and more people that occupy the island, that equates to more mouths that will have to be fed. Reppen estimates that Hawaii would need to have over SIX Million acres of land dedicated to farming to feed Hawaii’s growing population.

Since Hawaii does not have that much land, he advocates a change in diet. If beef were removed from the picture then the number of acres needed would be much lower. And the enormous pineapple plantations (and banana, coffee, etc) can be converted to grow useful calories. However, that would put a severe dent in Hawaii’s GDP. When the SHTF, Hawaiians might have to become mostly vegetarians (I assume they’ll still be able to fish). No bacon for you!!

HONOLULU—When my Airbus touched down at Honolulu International Airport, I was one of 30,843 people to arrive in Hawaii on a June day. As a crush of tourists mobbed rental car counters and taxi stands, massive container ships steamed into the Port of Honolulu just across the harbor, carrying some of the 6 million pounds of food shipped to Hawaii every day to feed the state’s 1.4 million residents and 8 million annual visitors. On nearby runaways, cargo planes landed packed with fresh fruit and other perishable items that wouldn’t survive the 2,500-mile ocean voyage. The world’s most isolated chain of islands, Hawaii imports nearly 90 percent of its food at a cost of more than $3 billion a year.
