Don’t all panic yet. This is a mobilization of USCG selected reserve and Ready Reserve. Selected reserve is a program where individuals can get a direct commission in the reserves as junior grade officers. Ready reserve is just like any armed forces reserve. When I was in the USCG decades ago, the reservists were mostly local fire fighters, emergency workers, and some police, all from within the local community. They were mostly there to build their pensions and possibly do some good and have a little excitement. At the time the whole USCG was smaller than the NYC police department.
But get some more police off the street (not that they are actually protecting anyone anyway), and the criminals will have an easier time of it.
I find it interesting that the military is withholding any information about the virus and how it is effecting its ranks (probably wise), but the NYPD is more that happy to announce how many officers are not showing up for work.
