SUNDAY MORNING CLASSICS ON TBP

A collaboration of: “The Classic Music Mafia”
nkit, Austrian Peter, and Steve C.

Every Sunday morning we present selections for our TBP family to enjoy.

We present symphonies, ensembles, quartets, octets, etc.

Not all of our music is strictly ‘classical’. We may stray a little, but we strive to make all of our selections ‘classy’.

We offer tips on proper ‘symphony etiquette’ and even some selections that are a bit light-hearted and fun aimed at a younger audience. Those pieces will be so designated, and might be a good way to introduce kids to a world of music that they might not have been exposed to or think of as old and ‘stuffy’.

A full symphony will run as long as it will. We don’t want to cut a symphony short. However, we also include some shorter pieces that we try to keep under fifteen minutes in length. You can sample each and hopefully find one or more that pleases you.

We hope that you enjoy our Sunday selections.

Helene Grimaud, Vladimir Jurowski – 2009 – Ravel concerto in G Major – Adagio Assai

I’d like submit another piece by the lovely concert pianist, Helene Grimaud.

Vladimir Jurowski is the conductor in this piece from 2009.

It is Ravel Concerto in G Major – Adagio Assai.

It is truly one of the most beautiful adagios.

Ms. Grimaud is a very sensitive pianist, and her dialog with the flutes and oboe especially is superb.

Today’s submittal total time: 7:14

What a beautiful melody at the beginning, with just a solo piano.
Then, at the 1:05 mark I get goosebumps when the hauntingly delicious lows of the upright bass and cellos begin,
accompanied by the other strings, then trumpets, trombones, and french horns.

The vid lets you see it, but hear the harp come in at 2:09.

@ 2:52, a brief clarinet is heard but not seen.

@ 4:10, a solo french horn leads, before an oboe comes in high above it, then joined by a clarinet again @ 4:18.

A flute highlighted again at the 5:15 mark, and as the end draws near, hear the two front center violins crying
that gorgeous melody again, in a wonderful harmony, with that piano in the background.

While listening to classical on the radio the other day, they played this tune I had not heard before.

It is from the movie Legends Of The Fall.

The composer is James Horner, and the track is The Ludlows.

Below, performed by the Film Symphony Orchestra, directed by Constantino Martinez-Orts.
