Not sure who the software question is directed at. Ubuntu can be run off a USB stick to try before installing and has Open Office in the package.
There are many flavors of Linux, but that is the one with the least hassles to learn for Windows people that I am aware of.
Agreed. Current Ubuntu is 20.04., and LibreOffice is part of the install. It’s matured quite well.
Once you’re confident, moving to Debian offers many more options.
For the truly hardcore, Gentoo would be your next step into becoming familiar with compiling. Then ‘vanilla’ linux from source offers the ultimate control.
