Living and working around a USAF base in Oklahoma for most of my adult life caused me to be blinded to the realities happening around the country in small towns and rural communities. We are blessed to live in a local community with respected and respectable neighbors; it doesn’t hurt to have the county sheriff and deputy sheriff within 2 and 5 miles, respectively.
I’ve forgotten exactly how to get to that sordid little encampment I U-turned out of the other day but I will not turn down that road again.
My little “farm truck” the 13-year-old Tucson needs a belt to run the A/C. I enjoy driving the gravel roads here with the windows down, what we used to call 4-60 air conditioning. So, as I came around the curve of the road to where a few old trailers were arranged in a sort of half circle just off the road, I knew I’d found a bad place. It was trashy, trashed and the smell of something nasty burning kind of hung in the air. A couple of dirty children were standing in the yard with a mean-looking dog.
