Wasn’t Carrol O’Connor a left wingnut? It had to be difficult for him to read those lines, unless he thought he was demonizing the real Archie’s of the world. At the time, I thought Archie was quite normal and expressed the common view because I did not know a single liberal.
Most in Hollywood are so disconnected from reality, or the reality that the rest of the universe has woken up to, that they don’t even get the jokes they are telling. Of course Archie was a spokesman for the common man. Just listen to the applause. If that was “canned,” it would have been real had they filmed in front of a live audience. What was going on in the 70s was shameful, and a carryover from the 60s. Sometimes they may do these shows/films as a condemnation, but in reality, millions connect perfectly well with the sentiment and sadly they don’t realize it. Falling Down and Michael Douglass’ character, are the symbol of everything that most people, not just whites, are facing these days. Disconnected is all that they are. They will be connected with the rest of reality really soon.
I think that the mocking part was meant to pander to the left. I think that another intent was to get the conservative white males to identify with the character and then slowly morph him into something “closer to their (the despicable’s – not the deplorable’s) hearts”. This game is played w/ a lot of sit-coms…. tim allen “tool time” for instance.
Devon Stack is the black-pilled guy as I recall. Who has famously stated that “no one takes the time and puts forth the effort to produce ‘content’ w/o understanding who his target audience is.”
The target audience -was- right wing whites (males in particular)… hook them and then begin to “persuade” them. M.A.S.H. was another example of this technique.

As actors go, I think both Archie (Carrol) and Edith (Jean)-being old school-were some of the last in their trade with any ability. Can you imagine an Edith being cast today?
I liked Mike, that was a highly skilled white man.
He basically lived off Archie. A true lefty.
The entire show Rosanne was supposed to be making fun of traditional families with thinly devised stereotypes. I never watched the show but people bought in thinking Rosanne was one of them. Her and her foul ex Tom Arnold want nothing to do with plebes except their money.
Michael Douglas’ character in Wall Street. The entire movie was meant to make people repulsed by the rich high flying tycoons of the 1980’s. Instead it backfired and it set the image that millions aspired to. Filthy-stinking-rich investors in that era. The producers were so horrified they made a sequel and tried to set the story right.
What a show that was. It easily goes without saying that this is one of the many shows/movies that could never be made today….
I blame Norman Lear for much. This thread is discussing All in the Family but how about Good Times and Soap? Good Times was the show that popularized the “cut down” and disrespect culture among Blacks. Much of that show was the characters verbally abusing each other. Soap had the first openly gay character and discussions around that that I remember on TV.
These shows gave perceived legitimacy to these ideas and helped steer them into the mainstream. We still see the effects today.
Look up Normal Lear. His origins should not be a surprise.
